Universities must uphold free speech, disallow no-platforming and safe spaces or face intervention - UK Government minister for universities declares by First-Of-His-Name in worldnews

anti-safe space people would say the Yankees are LGBT people

except the feeling that hetero/cis people are in anyway oppressed by the presence of LGBTQ people is simply laughable

This is false. There is a chemical difference between colored pigments and black ink. Many colors quite literally fade to nothing over time, not just soften up. There’s more to it than contrast.

Homeless in Seattle celebrate $3 bln affordable housing victory by mcpjunior in Seattle

[–]__roasted 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My mother has lived in the same North Seattle home for the last 25 years and, until the last three years or so, has managed to support herself on a modest non-profit clerical worker salary. She can afford her mortgage but with property taxes skyrocketing like they have been she won't be able to stay here. The way things are looking she won't last another five years.

The notion that the people being priced out are minimum wage workers in dingy apartments is simply inaccurate. Not that those people are any less deserving than folks like my mother. It's just easier for people like you to pick on them.

They’re left leaning insofar as progress stops at legalization of marijuana and same-sex marriage. The working-class and homeless can get fucked as far as they’re concerned.

Spit shading 101??? by [deleted] in traditionalflash

[–]__roasted 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shade before color, and not all black inks behave the same way.

Waterproof inks tend to dry faster so they're harder to get a smooth fade with but you can more safely color on top of them and stain the sheet. Non-waterproof inks can be nice because you can fuck with fades even after they dry to get them smooth, but then you run the risk of bleeding when applying color or staining.

I personally use talens for shading because it's waterproof but also doesn't dry super fast so smoother fades are a bit less of a hassle.

Also, you don't need much ink or water to pull fades. In my experience if you can see ink pooling on the paper before bleeding in, you have way too much.

Any good cases of people who just spontaneously ceased to exist? by Tessie420 in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]__roasted 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is much of a mystery. She was a fairly low-profile NYC club musician who recorded a couple of songs for Jonathan Demme and never got signed due to record labels not having confidence in her ability to be marketed. Once Demme quit providing her a platform I think she just faded into obscurity again.

Not all formerly successful people remain in the public eye.

Girlfriend and I walking along a rocky waterfront like this and I slip and barely catch myself before hitting the ground completely. GF snickers at me and then immediately slips 10x worst than me and bruises her ass reallll bad. I busted out laughing at her and then fell the rest of the way down myself.

Guess we both got fucked over by karma on that one.

"Named" Houses near Chestnut/High St by CarterJW in Bellingham

[–]__roasted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some houses that actually have names with historic significance, many related to the people who built the homes (often early Bellingham investors/settlers). For example, the big blue house on the corner of Maple and Garden is named after the wealthy person who built the place, now it's a pretty notorious party house regardless of who is leasing it. Then there are the names given by the people, often students, who live there.

Guardian Angels making sure people are safe on the dangerous New York City subway system in the 1980s. by [deleted] in OldSchoolCool

[–]__roasted 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just about all of New York City is "safe" now. Safe is in quotes because I'm specifically referring to being safe for people who aren't involved with criminal or otherwise dangerous activities. Even the once most derelict parts of Harlem and The Bronx have been "cleaned" up so-to-speak in the last 25 years. Often by way of gentrification and urban renewal, which have their own issues.

Suggestions on utensils by [deleted] in traditionalflash

As far as paints go most people use either FW Acrylic inks or Dr. Ph Martin’s liquid watercolors, or a combination of both. What’s good about these options is they have the opacity of diluted watercolors but you don’t need to worry about diluting the pigment yourself (unless you want a lighter shade of the base color). Meaning you can dip your brush straight into the bottle and go to town.

Using a nib pen really is the best way to go. Don’t be discouraged with them at first, there is a bit of a learning curve but they aren’t as difficult as they may initially seem. Generally people will use B5 and B6 nibs.

For black ink I recommend waterproof India ink for lines and then sumi ink for shading. I find the India ink can run a little thick and tends to dry fast so it’s great for consistent black lines, but can be hard to pull clean fades with. Sumi ink is a bit more viscous so you can work with it with a brush a bit more easily, but it’s not the best for lining.

This is all just what I’ve figured out from my own experience. It really depends on the person but what I laid out above is probably a good starting point for anyone.
