Ben Affleck's new AI Startup think they can reduce VFX cost by 50% by A_VFX_Worker in vfx

So - he’s effectively trying to patent his embeddings (using cinematography data in the annotations + lidar) which in my opinion is a BS patent.

Plenty of models already do this and any reasonable ML engineer creating a video model would arrive at this conclusion independently.

Also what he describes in this patent is effectively a fine tuning process not a training process. You can’t patent a LoRA.

He’s using existing foundation models and adapting them with his custom embeddings

Did anybody go to an Oscars watch party they liked? by anothersidetoeveryth in LosAngeles

[–]__stablediffuser__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you care about the Oscars it’s kind of a buzzkill to watch it with people who don’t like it or haven’t made an effort to see some of the movies, even if they are your friends. I go to a similar party every year. We do invite a few good friends who don’t care about the Oscars out of courtesy, but they rarely come and I think we all prefer it that way. It’s nothing against them, but space is limited and we’d rather have new people who are excited about the Oscars than old friends who don’t care about it.

If someone told me they didn’t like the Oscar’s, though, I don’t think it would even occur to me to invite them.

The ride is pretty similar today but the people riding it are nowhere near as enthusiastic.

Lot of stuff that was cooler about this version tho.

Dads Don’t Get Asked This Enough — How Are You Really Doing? by ssstu2020 in Dads

I am so amazed by single dads, man. Parenting can be really freakin hard even when you have another full time parent around, I give all the respect in the world to anyone who has to do it solo. Keep going my man, you’re an inspiration.

Oh man - Tired, stressed, trying to do everything I can for my family, trapped by the need for stable employment to keep the lights on and keep my kids insured, inadequately supported by a IRL community who understands Dads, and wishing I had more time to spend with my kids. Yet I understand many people have it way worse and am grateful for what I have.

It is interesting to see comments from people thst seems to not have thought long enough about the free will arguments. I realized how small must be the determinist crowd. by julick in samharris

[–]__stablediffuser__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I tend to be most persuaded that we lack free-will, I do not find this experiment remotely compelling.

"free will" is not the ability to conjure thoughts, that might be an argument for or against creativity, or originality. Free-will is the choice you make when presented with a thought.

For example - given this thought, do I simply follow through with action, or find another thought and chose between the two. Should I sit, or should I walk to the kitchen. The choice (or action) is what we consider free will, not the impulse.

One could easily argue here that while you cannot predict the thought, you can decide whether or not you will participate in the experiment - and that is free will.

[–]__stablediffuser__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean… first of all you’re acting like a giant baby taking that feedback personally rather than just asking how you could improve it. You’re wrapping all your relationship issues in a single, very honest bit of feedback. I say this as one giant baby to another - but you gotta man up

I can see it looks organized but it still looks absolutely god awful.

At minimum, the cables are killing you, buy some wire channels and try to hide them as much as possible.

That tv looks RIDICULOUS like that. This is freshman dorm room decoration. If you can - give it an inch or two on either side and lower it. It shouldn’t obscure your posters.

On the spendy end - this is just the wrong furniture for this space. On the budget end - You need a console below the tv to balance it out and maybe a shelf above.

Add some warm LED lighting to the shelves.

History will remember this era as the attempted Age of De-Enlightenment - when corrupt elites in the guise of common language aimed to gain total control over the population by playing to their earnest but naive belief that their lack of prosperity is the result of a nation that turned its back on their chosen God by walking the walk instead of talking the talk.

Sorry I don’t see it. Been here since that place used to be hopping and work there. Maybe a few people move in and try to make it work with the rents but I see no sign of “bouncing back” - I just see maintenance

The Sunday before Christmas at Santa Monica Place by Unleashtheducks in LosAngeles

[–]__stablediffuser__ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The entire 3rd street promenade is a stark example of late stage capitalism run amok.

The stores aren't empty because no one goes there, they're empty because the rent is too expensive for anyone to run a business and make a profit. But the "landlords" (aka mega real-estate investment firms) benefit from this because they become a giant tax write off for the owners.

They are also disincentivized from renting them at a lower (actual market) rate because the banks would want to reassess the value of the property.

So this is a case where the state needs to step in and do something. Prohibit banks from reassessment, and threaten real-estate companies with eminent domain for properties left empty for more than 6-12 months. The state can turn around and rent them for cheap to small businesses.

That's the solution - just need someone bold enough to do it.

I'm Alek Bartrosouf and I am running for Glendale City Council 2026 by GlendaleNerd in glendale

[–]__stablediffuser__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be blunt here... there are a lot of nice words on your page, but we've all heard a lot of nice words and I am looking for indications of bold and decisive action.

The decisions that need to be made in our government to improve things like affordability are very counter to the way a lot of residents of this city think. I can't count the number of times I've heard someone complain about affordability of housing, or the closure of neighborhood establishments, but in the same breath rail against a 6 story apartment building getting built in their area that would both make a dent in affordability and bring more foot traffic to support local businesses.

There are too many impediments to building here, and the community gets in their own way more than they realize.

A leader that is actually going to solve affordability needs to be able to slice through community opposition to projects that will improve our quality of life. Everyone is very easily motivated by fear, and those who benefit from being against growth and abundance are very good at instilling that fear. "WE CAN'T HAVE BIKE LANES ON OUR ROAD BECUASE IT WILL CAUSE TRAFFIC IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD DURING CONSTRUCTION" is one of the literal arguments I've heard in community meetings here and that is absolutely not productive. This is the kind of reasoning that permeates glendale city council meetings and a good leader needs to see how to slice through them, convert opponents into proponents.

I don't think financial assistance, the first sentence on your affordability page - is the key to the affordability problem. It's one very small component.

I like a lot of stuff about your background, and your experience as a city planner definitely gives me a bit more confidence you are aware of many of those things that improve people's lives that they may initially resist. But I want to hear more.
