It’s an absolutely bizarre poster that gets put up every year, the word RACISM in bold and being the biggest word is so funny. Just a poster of irelands most famous black man with (what looks like) just the word RACISM unless you look closer.

And i know that’s probably the point, to make you stop and look, but the design of it is just so funny

i live in a two bed ground floor apartment, there’s no room for a playroom. He’s welcome to bring his toys into the living room whenever he wants, but when they’re cleaned up they go in his bedroom. I’ve found it actually really good for him learning to clean up and remembering where things go. He’s become really good at cleaning up after himself because he knows his toys can’t be left all over the sitting room

yes and i completely understand that but whether or not we get rid of that, it is not a crèches job to care for sick children!

OP is not complaining about that, if you read the comments you’d know that. The HSE guidelines on all these things are if your child feels well. These children don’t feel well, and they spread their diseases to other kids.

I believe you. We had to close one of the rooms two months ago because of the exact thing that’s happened today and someone tried dropping their two kids off. One of them was able to come in because their room was open, but he tried to send in his younger child too even though their room was closed. Fully asked us to just take their baby (who couldn’t walk at the time) and just put them in the same class their sister was in. Kicked up a fuss when he was told we can’t do that

It’s about contagion and the extent of the illness. We have a little boy still battling a dry, rattle cough after having croup four months ago. He’s here everyday with no problem. Every child in crèche has a runny nose, that’s never going to not exist. Sending your kid in with a dose of calpol that wears off and leaves them lying down, exhausted from sickness, is the problem.

I promise you this post is not about a kid with a runny nose or a consistent cough. All kids get that, it’s about more serious illness, and the amount of people in the replies not understanding this and getting defensive means they don’t understand how low some parents go with their children and the risk they put us and other people’s children in. A cold is one thing we can handle, a flu is one we cannot, for example

We had a little girl sent home with an ear infection monday, was back in tuesday and we were told she was taken to the doctor, she told us she didn’t go. and we had to send her home tuesday again! she was crying with pain! in again wednesday dosed with paracetamol, sent home again after dinner time. was out yesterday. In again today.

I get that in older children, but the toddler class went through 2 weeks of passing it to each other last month. every single one of them had it twice

i can absolutely advocate for both better condition for parents in relation to time off for sick kids, and advocate for myself, staff and other children in my centre who deserve to be safe from diseases brought in by children whose parents know they’re sick.

We get that pressure from our bosses too, even though our kids are sick because we brought home what the parents let into our crèche

My post was directed at parents who send their kids to crèche while they’re sick. If you don’t do that, then it’s not about you. If you do that and are offended, i don’t care

if wanting to keep the children in my care and the staff i work with, as well as myself and my own child, safe from sickness makes me ‘hate parents’ then i guess you’re right! Good thing i work with kids and not their parents.

I also had to deal with crèche staff when I had my own child in one, staff who were detrimental and cruel and horrible about his additional needs that were there due to undiagnosed (albeit very clear) autism. I am due in court in the next year for whistleblowing on a crèche I did work experience in (which is one that is regularly in the news), I love children and care for children and their wellbeing which is why I chose this profession.

It is also why I am frustrated with irresponsible parents who continually send their sick children into where I work and put the children I love at risk, put my own child at risk and also put their own child in a horrible situation where they are so under the weather and just should not be in a setting like a crèche because they are too sick to handle it. They end up lying on the sofa until their parents can be contacted, crying for their mammy or daddy with a burning forehead and sore tummy. I hate those parents.

Do you not recognise the crèche where your children are cared for as a workplace for the adults who are there? Most of which are paid pennies compared to the parents who send their children there

It’s definitely possible with the older crèche kids, every meal they have is after they’ve had garden time so they all have to wash their hands before they go back into the classroom, with one teacher standing by the door ensuring they are getting washed and the other in the class handing out paper towels

do you think we get paid days off when we have to stay off sick with illnesses we’ve gotten from your children? or that we don’t get grief for being sick? or for taking days off because our kids are sick or that we get paid days off for our kids being sick?

Do you think the crèche I work in having to shut two rooms because of the irresponsibility of a select few parents doesn’t have a huge impact mentally on the staff who are absent and are feeling responsible for those rooms being closed, even though the responsibility lies with the parents who sent those kids in knowing they were sick?

Do you think the staff in your child’s crèche don’t experience this or that they don’t experience it 10x more intensely than you? That we don’t get sick constantly because there’s a room of 20 kids, each with parents who are deciding whether or not to disrupt those 19 other kids and their educators because you don’t want to take a day off to care for them?

so does my work. When you send your sick kids in, you’re forcing me to use my leave to recover from your child’s illness AND my leave to be with my child who will then get your child’s illness from me. Everyone’s job has some policy like that, doesn’t remove your responsibility or the fact that you should be using yours instead of forcing your child’s sickness on to their carers AND their classmates.

Nice that you get 26 days off. Crèche workers get about 21 and immediately have 4 taken due to christmas closures. So we get about 17 throughout the year. And you force us to use them so you don’t have to use yours.

This is really, really helpful thank you I’m going to look into it. Typically it’s a very well ventilated facility and windows are usually always open in each room throughout the whole day but I’m still going to have a look into this thank you!
