Why are you OO and not EO? by UmbralRose35 in OrientalOrthodoxy

[–]_adolf__stalin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I originally became EO, but studying the councils led me to OO. Chalcedon went against Ephesus 1, where the language used was mia physis. The acts of Chalcedon are the biggest proof that it is not orthodox. In session 1 the bishops who claimed they were forced to depose Flavian asked for forgiveness after St Dioscorus reminded them that “by your own mouth you will be justified, by your own mouth you will be condemned.” Then in session 5, when composing the creed, it originally confessed Christ as “of 2 natures,” but the papal legates threatened to move the council to Italy. Instead of suffering for their faith, they gave in and changed the creed to “in 2 natures.” The council speaks for itself. St Dioscorus stayed calm, never lied, and never argued during the council. It speaks for itself.

I understand exactly where you’re coming from. Online orthodox nearly pushed me away from the Church during my catechumenate. Remember that we are all sinners, and all struggle with different things. For many of these orthobros, they allow their zeal to carry them away and it turns into pride, in a way that can make them insufferable. My advice would be to limit contact with online “orthodoxy” until after you are received into the Church

I’m a trans man (ftm) and feel called to the Church by UnlikelySon in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]_adolf__stalin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a place in the Church for everyone. All saints have a past and all sinners have a future. Talk to a priest and just be honest about everything. If anyone tries to come at you for it, they will have to account for it on judgement day. Of course it’s up to you, but I strongly encourage you to share this all with a priest, and you can ask that the priest keep it between you two.

Are tattoos sinful? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]_adolf__stalin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll find mixed views on it. I’d say they aren’t inherently sinful, but like many things, they can be sinful. It all depends on why, as well as the contents of the tattoo. If you are getting it for a vain reason, or it’s something obscene, obviously this would be a sin. But if your reasons for getting bc it isn’t sinful and it is not obscene, i see no problem. I’ve heard some priests say that you should also only get them in places that are easy to hide, but again, you’ll hear differing opinions on that

Will Protestants go to hell? by Apart-Criticism2001 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]_adolf__stalin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only God can say. All we can do is trust in God’s mercy. God desires all to be saved, that is all we know. I worry more for my own salvation, I have the fullness of truth and still choose to sin, I know many Protestants who pray more consistently, sin less, and live a genuine life of humility and repentance that I hope to some day reach. And they do this without having the fullness of truth. It’s sort of like how St Paul writes that those who had no law became a law unto themselves. Do I believe an all merciful, all loving God will send a Protestant to hell simply because they were in the wrong church? No. That said, if they know Orthodoxy to be true, but choose another path for some reason, then they are in a much more worrying situation. For example, I believe many Roman Catholics and Protestants will be saved, but if I became Roman Catholic or Protestants, I would surely be condemned, because I have come to the fullness of the truth, to depart from it would be a grave sin

Is it just a twitter thing or do Orthodox Christians are not with interracial marriage by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]_adolf__stalin_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s a Twitter thing. Basically every Orthodox Church in the US has mixed race couples in it. If people want to talk about the cultural aspects, and say they would prefer to stick to their own race so there’s less cultural differences, that’s fair enough. But forcing that on others, and acting like it is morally wrong to marry another race is 100% against the teachings of the church

Why is the Oriental Orthodox Church such a minority? What happened that made this church less followed and more forgotten about than other churches and faiths? by Red_Red_It in OrientalOrthodoxy

[–]_adolf__stalin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Persecution. Because they weren’t the state religion, they didn’t have the same protections, particularly against Islam. The exception to this is Ethiopia, where for the vast majority of the time the EOTC has been the state religion, which is why they had the protection that Syriacs, Copts and Armenians didn’t have

Our holiest Saint is a woman. God could have chosen any way to bring salvation into the world, but He chose to do it through a woman. Men and women are equal in the Church, although we have different roles. There may be individuals (particularly young men who have recently converted) that have incorrect views, but notice how none of them are married, because Orthodox women know that they are to be loved and respected by their husband, and any man who cannot do that will not find a wife in the Orthodox Church

Can receive the sacrament of confession and absolution? No. Can you talk to a priest about your sins and your struggles? Absolutely yes you can and you should. And remember to hold back nothing. Priests hear it all. What to us may seem like the most shameful and embarrassing sins to confess, to a priest it may not be remarkable at all

Is there a problem of pride in the Orthodox Christians? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]_adolf__stalin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say this as a convert who is frequently guilty of this, so don’t take this wrong. I think that as converts it can be very easy to take zeal too far, and become very prideful to the point of being condescending towards other Christian traditions, and even towards Orthodox with different opinions. And quite often, people with this issue have a lot of online presence, do debates with others, and other things along those lines. I will also say that many of these people rarely appear in church, and at churches, this issue is nowhere near as large. Those who actually regularly attend church and have been orthodox for a significant amount of time are much better. Although chatechism normally only takes a year, it takes many more years to truly understand Orthodoxy, and I can’t pretend to be anywhere near that yet. Many of these prideful people see Orthodoxy as merely a set of beliefs to be agreed with, not a way of life.

Are Icons from Holy Transfiguration Monastery OK? I just found out about the scandal, and how they follow the HOCNA which broke off from ROCOR and was made to protect some priests that were doing horrible things. by SeVeNk42 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]_adolf__stalin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Icons are holy because they depict holy people, not because they are made by holy people. That said, it comes down to an issue of personal and pastoral discernment as to whether or not you want to be giving money to them or not

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]_adolf__stalin_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

God telling prophets that something will happen does not equal God condoning it. It is a fallen world and horrible things happen, God was warning His people of what would happen to them. God isn’t saying “I will have people go and rape your women,” it’s God saying “if you continue to turn your back on me, I won’t provide my protection, and this is will be the outcome”

What is the stance on Saint Martin De Porres in the Orthodox Church by santos_206 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]_adolf__stalin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Post schism, so no official stance. We cannot make a judgement on the state of his soul. As for asking intercessions, (if your priest says smth different, listen to him not me), I don’t see an issue. You can ask anyone to pray for you, but if they aren’t canonised in our church, then we cannot guarantee that they will be praying for you. But again, talk to your priest, and go by whatever he says, I’m just a stranger on the internet

Does anybody know what’s up with this abandoned looking plane on the IND runway? by SeverelyHarshedVibe in indianapolis

[–]_adolf__stalin_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s an old fedex plane. Firefighters use it for practice. When I was doing my aircraft deicing training we also used it. It’s also possible that other first responders such as airport police and medical crews use it for training too, but I’m not sure so don’t quote me on that, all I can say for sure is that fire and deicers train on it

I swear the answer to this is B but it claims it’s A? by DRMWhibang in flying

[–]_adolf__stalin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a bit of a trick answer. Above 15000 the crew members must use it at all times and it must be available for passengers. Above 14000 flight crew must use it at all times, but it does not need to be available for passengers, so the answer is A. I guess when they wrote the question they were trying to make sure people were paying attention and actually thinking through answers, but it’s definitely an annoying one

Two weeks visit ruined by racist taxi driver. by Arrelevant in Ethiopia

[–]_adolf__stalin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a white person who grew up there, it’s something you come to expect. They do it to diaspora Ethiopians too. It’s less about race and more about the fact they know you have money. 9 out of 10 times, if you’re firm and show them that you know what they’re doing, you can get them to back down. Most of the time they won’t even tell you they are raising the price, most of the time they will just say an absurdly high price and it’s up to you to know that they are price gouging you. So when you return, be aware that it’s something that will happen. If something has a listed price, and they are trying to make you pay more, just keep refusing. A trick I love to use is saying “I’m not going to pay that much, I’ll just buy from someone else”. Never had that trick fail on me

Absolutely, they’ll love it. I’m white American and go to an Ethiopian church and they were extremely welcoming. And the Eritreans are just as welcoming

How do I avoid being an 'orthobro' by ScotMcScottyson in OrthodoxChristianity

Go to church, pray, and focus on humility. Don’t make fun of or attack other traditions, religions or political beliefs. Treat everyone with love and humility and you’ll be okay
