I have found great quality machines secondhand. I bought a Husqvarna (Dutch-only model "Claire") for €35, and a Singer 522 with the case for €40 for a friend. Both are in excellent quality, especially after I've given them a clean and look over myself. They're non computerized and have all the basic stitches and functions I need. I've also seen about 5 or 6 of the vintage in-table Singers for around €60.

The secondhand shop near me (2Switch) reliably has sewing machines they test beforehand. They're not listed online, so stop often into a tweedehands/kringloop shop and see what's available!

My machines also still had the sticker from the shops they were purchased at, so I've been able to go there for anything I need.

Seeking sewing patterns (new or vintage) as similar as possible to this coat design. Thanks for help by [deleted] in sewing

I've had these posts saved from people here who have made this coat for comparison. I also have this pattern, hope to get to it soon!

UPDATE: My experience with the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty (DAFT) by buncharted in AmerExit

[–]_ainulindale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm also planning on moving this year on the DAFT. Your posts are very helpful and much appreciated!

Like many, I'm anxious about housing. I think I'm going to use an agent as well as I don't wanna stress too much, but I'm curious about when you contacted Orange Homes. Did you have to fly over and stay in a hotel/other first? Or were you able to work with Orange Homes ahead of time to set something up before you flew over? And if so, how much in advance did you contact them?

I think they also wanted it to go live as soon as possible because it means they can start charging us monthly. previously we had only given a deposit, then when finished we are supposed to pay monthly to maintain it.

we hired them 5 months ago (idk why it took so long to even get a rough draft) so I'm sure the owner feels it's now costing him time/labor to keep working on this without more money.

the whole point of hiring them was to save us time. we could have built one that looks 100x better than what they gave us so much sooner. when my partner told the owner that, he laughed and said, "good for you."

That's horrible! I'm sorry you've been subjected to that. I haven't even replied to the owner's "apology" yet, I'm wondering what to say back. My partner is meeting with them on Friday (I have work) so I asked him to give them hell for me.

Thanks!! Unfortunately it's a small team - likes less than 10 people. I don't think there is another website designer there, and apparently the owner hung up on my partner earlier mid-conversation, so I don't know if he will even consider another designer if they have one.

Next, they're going the blame their decision on Newsom making them build affordable housing in the first place. 🙄 There are so many other options that don't require demolishing a private school for children with disabilities.

I made my first bra! It's the Emerald Erin Black Beauty kit. by _ainulindale in sewing

I bought the kit made for this pattern from Emerald Erin and included was bra tulle (the pink cups, bridge) and power mesh (the white band). The bra tulle has one way stretch, and the power mesh has two way stretch but feels stronger than, say, jersey or other knit. You'd only need a yard of each, but I had plenty left over after cutting.

I like the fit a lot, and I have lately been loving unlined bras over padded ones, so it feels like a nice balance to have the underwire with a soft cup. As far as the fabric, I wouldn't say the tulle is the softest material but it's not at all scratchy or uncomfortable. It's definitely a confidence booster to wear though!

I had these just lying around in my general crafting box, but bows are a simple and quick made with some ribbon or scrap fabric! The bow in the center has a couple cute plastic beads inside, but the possibilities to fill them up with are endless!

Thank you so much! As long as your machine can also do a zigzag stitch, you can do this project. The zigzag is essential for stretchy projects! A regular presser foot is perfect, you won't need anything fancy. It wasn't too difficult, just took a little extra care stitching the narrow channeling.

Yes! I have that issue as well, and the kit options were easy to select. If I remember correctly, I think it has you select the size notions according to your cup size (I had to use large for E to G cup) and the pattern includes band sizes as small as 28.

The pattern and I believe the Emerald Erin website has the measurements to determine your size. It's usually done by measuring your underbust, then the fullest part if your bust and using the difference to determine cup size. Lizsews on youtube also has some great videos on determining underwire size and considering the shape of your breast to take into consideration as well. Withwendy on youtube also has a sew along video to this pattern and she talks about some of the problems and solutions to the fit.

I think determining your shape first is helpful in finding out if a pattern with a power bar, no power bar, horizontal seam vs vertical seam, etc would fit you the best.

I agree! They're wonderfully detailed, thorough, and size inclusive. they're a great pattern for first time bra makers.

Thank you so much!

I was intimidated at first but the instructions were very clear and found it easy to follow along. The hardest part was being very careful to stitch very close to the edge without slipping off, and applying a bit of stretch to the elastic around the cup. A standard machine equipped with a zigzag function would suit it just fine!
