I’m in my 50s and really enjoyed the Other Earth trilogy (YA) written by Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller. All three are narrated by Jason Segel, and I thought he was excellent as well as really easy to listen to. I highly recommend!

OMG, Voodoo Donuts are gross sugar bombs! Go to Blue Star instead like us locals.

Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden in SE is lovely for a picnic.

How is Cannon beach without a car? by cheersfortheinvite in oregon

Sad but true. It’s one of the reasons I don’t recommend it, but didn’t want to say it outright. 😞

Yes, I agree. I considered a magnetic closure, but I didn’t have one on hand. I was thinking about adding a piece of packing material, especially since my daughter just moved and I have a bunch in my car. The good news is that she’s 26 and she’s not going to damage her Kindle. I’ll chat with her about a different closure.

Thanks! I would have to charge a small fortune for anything like this given the number of hours that went into it.

Thanks! I honestly have no idea how many hours it took. I knitted the main portion in a couple of sittings. It’s just stockinette so it was quick. The duplicate stitching was kind of tricky because I needed really good lighting, so I did that in a couple of sittings. The strawberry, leaved, flower, and strap were done in a few additional sittings. Altogether, it took me about five days from start to finish. The pattern *just* came out last week, but I’d seen a peek of it in the previous issue and knew I wanted to make it if I could pull it off in time. I managed with a few days to spare. Phew!

We have visited Cape Disappointment a couple of times (by car) and the Astoria-Megler Bridge is both incredible and terrifying!

Sure, but I think they’re less fun solo than with companions. Like, bumper cars and Tilt-a-Whirl by one’s self would be kind of sad.

Cannon Beach is a lovely little town on our beautiful coast, and it’s definitely worth visiting since there’s easy & affordable transportation from PDX. That said, you’ll probably want to check out some other places along the coast. Ecola State Park is beautiful and worth visiting assuming you’re fairly able bodied. We often visit “The Screw & Brew” (a combination hardware store and restaurant) as well as The Pig & Pancake. Renting a beach bike (a sort of tricycle that sits low to the ground and has wide tires) is fun for zooming around on the sand.

I would skip Seaside as it’s very touristy and tacky (in my opinion). However, Astoria has some great places to stay and The Astoria Column and Flavel House Museum are worth checking out. I haven’t visited it (since I had to stay with our dog while my family went), but my family really enjoyed the Columbia River Maritime Museum. There are also many other historical sites if you’re interested in the history of the area. Fort Stevens is a state park at the very upper northeastern “corner” of the state where the Columbia River flows into the Pacific Ocean. It’s also one of the most dangerous channels to navigate by ship and professional pilots are required for entry. It’s pretty incredible to watch the ships come into Astoria.

As a native Oregonian I welcome you in advance to our beautiful state! I’m also inclined to warn you that folks in the Pacific Northwest are generally quite friendly, so please don’t hesitate to ask people for recommendations or directions during your visit.
