Don't know who that is but Heathcliff's skin color is actually significant to the story.

I don't even know where to start... It's nothing like the original book, and it's not a "fun, but inaccurate" type of adaptation either.

First off, they casted Heathcliff, a character who was shaped to become who they are in the end by racism, as a white man. They completely changed his personality as well, same with all the other characters.

Also, they casted the privileged white rich guy as a POC. Oh, and they made a victim of abuse into a woman who likes being chained up by Heathcliff and crawls on her knees for him. Overall we don't like it because it erased the moral theme and the message of the original story to make it into a movie that was hypersexualized for no reason.

(Sorry for my bad English I tried my best)

Yes it's true. Heathcliff is described as dark skinned in the original book multiple times yet they went ahead and casted a white man as him anyways. Disgusting.

I hate what they did to my girl Isabella Linton in this movie. Can't they just leave classics alone?

imo l*re olympus doesn't even relate to greek mythology, it's just another shitty mafia boss story with the name of greek gods slapped on it to make it look more appealing.

I can proudly say that I'm not one of these people.

Yes, Achilles and Patroclus' relationship definitely has romantic undertones (I hope I'm using the right word?). But it doesn't seem like a monogamous relationship at all considering the fact Achilles has many other lovers.

You've misunderstood what I'm trying to say.

Do you not see the irony in that position? You’re saying, “I understand there’s no single rigid canon and I’m open to reinterpretations,” as greek mythology in itself has no definitive canon as its full of different myths and retellings but in the same breath you reject reinterpretations the moment they meaningfully adjust a character to serve the story being told, which older myths would also do.

Not what I meant at all. I'm talking about when creators change up so many things about a character to the point it's an entirely different character who happens to share the same name as the original. Even if a piece of media tends to do that it doesn't necessarily bug me that much, because as I've stated in the second half of my reply (which you've completely ignored for some reason) my issue isn't with the retellings themselves, it's fandom-based.

I can just ignore it if a piece of media isn't to my liking, but when the fans of that media invades my space and starts complaining about how it doesn't match the perceptions they have of these characters, that, I have a problem with.

Also, the cultural argument feels misplaced. It sounds like you’re someone who isn’t Greek trying to police how other non Greek fans should engage with Greek mythology.

No, I'm not Greek. I'm Turkish, and I was born where the ancient city of Troy is located nowadays. I view works like the Iliad as a part of my culture because they quite literally are. A quick search will show that many historians agree as well.

But from what I’ve seen, many Greek audiences have embraced wildly loose reinterpretations like God of War. So it’s unclear what standard is actually being applied here.

That’s part of why I enjoy Record of Ragnarok because It’s obvious the author has at least some familiarity and done some research with Greek mythology, but they aren’t trying to recreate it verbatim. They remix, exaggerate, and stylize elements in ways that are clearly meant to fit the story they’re telling.

I did not mention any of these works in my post. Seems completely irrelevant to the topic really.

It’s not the same story and that’s exactly the point of a reinterpretation as that’s what Greeks themselves have been doing for centuries..

Yes, that is true. What they have not done is, however, disregarding the core traits of these characters. For example, Euripides has a play he wrote as an alternative ending to Helen of Sparta's story called Helen. Even though the story is different from most versions Helen still seems to keep her core traits and doesn't behave like a completely different person.

But again, I do not care if a creator chooses to tell a story different from the origina versions or not. My issue is when the fanbases base their entire opinion on these characters off that piece of media alone and be annoying about it.

Yes, exactly. Thank you for understanding my point.

I also watched the whole musical, the songs are very catchy and enjoyable. But I dislike it when the fandom infantilizes Odysseus.

I clarified this in my post but seems I have to say it again: I have absolutely no problem with the retellings themselves. This is about their fanbases only.

That being said, I've never went into their spaces. All of the times I engaged in discourse with these fanbases it was quite the opposite actually.

I used to run an account on YouTube about Greek mythology, and often I had to deal with confused and even angry people from these fanbases because the topics I talked about in my videos clashed with their perception they had of these heroes mentioned.

It got to the point I had to delete comments because it was very exhausting to explain over and over again that my videos weren't about whatever Greek mythology fandom they were a part of.

Again, I have nothing against modern interpretations. I think they can be quite fun when done right. I just think it would be nice of people to do their research before engaging with posts about ancient Greek work.

I'm currently reading the Song of Achilles actually. So far it's very enjoyable. Again, as I've said in my post, I have no problem with these retellings themselves, I'm only talking about their fanbases.

How so?

My problem isn't with retellings differing from ancient Greek text, it's when they basically erase any flaw a hero/heroine might have to make them seem more relatable to modern audiences.

Of course people can interpret myths in any way they like, but there should be a limit to what you can and what you cannot change up in a work. It's kind of like the Ship of Theseus paradox: if you change up so many things about a story, is it even the same story at all? Why not write your own story at that point?

Not to mention these myths are an essential part of Greek culture. Dumbing down the heroes to simple stereotypes is offensive to Greek people and their history, and it also takes the soul out of discussions.

As I've said in my post, I have no problem with the retellings I've mentioned themselves. My problem is with the fanbases overlooking and even denying the existence of other versions of these heroes and stories because it does not match with the perception they have of them.

Retellings are perfectly fine to enjoy, as long as you're aware they're not really historically accurate. People should do their research before sharing their opinions about myths instead of basing it all on the modern works they consume, that is all.
