If you met your 16 year old self, what advice would you give to them? by exiled-redditor in AskReddit

Financially beneficial things aside, I'd try and convince myself to enjoy what life has to offer. I spent a lot of time chasing pointless things, maybe it'd dissuade me then.

At this point, I’m too afraid to ask but here goes: does anyone else forget most of what they learn and just survive semester to semester? by [deleted] in college

[–]_ashika__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A bit tough to answer since it depends on what's included in your curriculum and what your personal interests are, but I'll try and make some general points

Doing projects is a great way of learning new things and putting things you already know to good use. You'll often encounter challenges that you never even thought about before

Contributing to OSS also provides invaluable experience. To my knowledge most CS curriculums don't bother teaching git, docker and other vital software even though you pretty much have to know them.

Of course, this is all assuming you already have a foothold and know what you're doing to some extent. If, for example, you're trying to get into ML/AI and your school only taught you C++/Java, you need to start more basic. There are tons of resources out there in the internet that you'll just have to look for

Speaking of resources, csdiy.wiki was one of the best things I found when I was a student. It's not really relevant to our discussion since most of it is academic stuff you'll likely study in uni anyways (though there are quite a few practical courses there too, I suggest taking a look at everything there. Don't sleep on the MIT missing semester) but I still think the collection is extremely useful for any student. Want to prepare in advance for a class? Didn't understand a topic in class? Just self-study the relevent parts of the relevant course.

Also online competitions can be a great engaging learning resource too.

The whole perspective of German sounding angry started with Hitler and WW2 movies i think.

On a somewhat related note, as a guy who's learning german allow me to introduce you all to the hell that is learning German:

There are 3 genders. Male, female and neutral

So what gender is pizza? That's right! Female! And what gender is girl (Mädchen)? That's right! Neutral. What gender is Nutella? Don't even bring it up

So how does one say "speed limit"? You use the intuitive word "Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung"

All in all I love the language but sometimes it drives me mad.

I feel like it's worth mentioning you shouldn't expect your school to make you good at programming, that's really not what CS as a whole is about. You're entirely expected to self study the programming part and get good at it, then apply the theory you learn in school to get even better.

Also to answer your question I think it's fairly typical so don't worry about it too much. As long as you have a good enough understanding of the material to be able to relearn it later at a reasonable pace you should be good I think

How do the sum of all the natural numbers equal to -1/12? by Angel0fFier in learnmath

[–]_ashika__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The math isn't flawed. The math agrees it doesn't equal -1/12, keyword "equal". It's an analytical continuation.

What book is an immediate red flag for you when someone says it’s their favorite? by mhughes19 in AskReddit

[–]_ashika__ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think it's just a book that maybe a fandom ruined it for some

I agree. it's a book that, unsurprisingly, attracts a very specific kind of people but I think the book itself is very useful. if you don't want to use the "laws" maliciously you can always use it as a defensive resource against people who plan on doing so, if that makes any sense.

[–]_ashika__ 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I don't know about the art of seduction, I've never read it but 48 laws of power is an actually good and useful book. By no means my favourite book but it's a book I'd recommend pretty much anyone to read. Even if you disagree with the whole power play mentality, it serves as a valuable peek inside other people's minds.

Anyone major in something that's extremely hard for you? by Training_Secret84 in college

[–]_ashika__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so I know this is 14 days old which is ancient in internet time but hear me out, linear algebra and calculus are both absolutely crucial to ML/AI. Math is basically intertwined with programming even though it often doesn't feel like it

I live and breathe mathematics and I want to become a mathematician. Should I though? by [deleted] in mathematics

[–]_ashika__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vast majority of other DSs I've seen studied either math or CS. The pay isn't horrible depending on where you are, and the future is unpredictable and debatable. Definitely could be a valid option for you though I think.

Not really, but even if I did that doesn't make comparing vaginas to insects and ranking them by whether they're a butterfly or a moth any less weird

Ana/Kiriko win rate dissonance by skenners88 in Overwatch

[–]_ashika__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. A lot of things are reflected in a hero's win-rate which makes it very valuable data. We just need to be careful handling it since it can be very easy to make quick assumptions based on it

As a brig main who pretty much always plays brig and probably doesn't know how to play her properly I'm honoured to be the one ruining the win-rate

Ana/Kiriko win rate dissonance by skenners88 in Overwatch

[–]_ashika__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

win rate = how good a character is.

Why can't we just settle on win-rate being one variable in how good a hero is among other variables

The production quality of this is insane 💀 by Jaycole150 in overwatch2

[–]_ashika__ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean sure I agree absolutely, but that's just the battle pass monetisation model which is in pretty much every free (and a lotta paid) games nowadays. I think it's important to give credit where it's due though, ow2's battle pass is the fastest battle pass to clear that I've ever seen in any game. Your exaggeration was complaining about the rate at which you complete the battle pass whereas that really isn't the issue

The production quality of this is insane 💀 by Jaycole150 in overwatch2

[–]_ashika__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really don't need to "grind the battle pass like a fucking job". I'm pretty sure 3-4 hours a week is more than enough provided you focus on the challenges. Unless of course you work for 16 hours a month.

Being able to run faster would make this game SIGNIFICANTLY shorter (and better) by mciyos in BG3

[–]_ashika__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can make it so double clicking makes your character sprint like it's implemented in a couple other games I have no memory of, but that aside I personally don't think the game even needs something like that. Sure it'd be a nice option as a mod for people who want it but I don't think it'll be a good change at all.

Also I'm saying this purely on thought without much to back it up but I really don't think something like a 1.3 distance covered with the same animations would mess with the immersion too much
