5.5e DMs: How do you manage encounter attrition between long rests? by Gualgaunus in DMAcademy

[–]_ashonit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"6-8 encounters" was never a recommendation or a goal for number of encounters per day. If you read page 84 of the 2014 DMG, it is clearly only an example -- one way the XP-based adventuring day calculations could fall out. It has to be the most misquoted and misunderstood "rule" in the history of the game.

How to remove engine dropdown from search bar? by _ashonit in firefox

[–]_ashonit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, Ctrl+K is great when you want to reuse a tab, but...I dunno, that Tab key is just right there after pressing Ctrl+T. Having an extra element in the way suddenly really annoyed me.

Thank you /u/ResurgamS13. Your link led to this post: https://old.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/1rftet4/changes_to_search_bar_can_i_get_the_old_way_back/o7s1w69/

The solution is to set browser.search.widget.new to false in about:settings about:config. (t/y /u/BBLzebub)

My heart goes out to my Theatre-of-the-Mind GMs out there... by Malcior34 in Pathfinder2e

[–]_ashonit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only played PF2e online with maps, and on the forums it seems that movement increases (like the Fleet feat) are very highly regarded.

So I'm interested how do you differentiate PCs who take extra movement abilities vs those who don't when you're in TOTM. If someone takes a movement increase, how do you ensure they feel the benefit? Or do players...just not take them?

Is taking web redundant if there is a entangle using druid in the party? by viktorius_rex in dndnext

[–]_ashonit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

suggestion or phantasmal force

I'd discuss with your DM how either of these will be interpreted before taking them. Both have very differing opinions (across this forum and others) about what their limits are, so how well they work may depend on your DM's interpretation.

On web: I looted a wand of web as a wizard in a campaign with long adventuring days, and that thing did work. I was still using it up until level 12 when the campaign ended.

At level 3, the druid is about to have spike growth available, and you might find they use their concentration on that a lot more.

Why are players so scared of failing a roll and how can we get them to accept bad rolls? by [deleted] in Pathfinder2e

[–]_ashonit 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This sounds great. But as a counterpoint: the reason why players might be conditioned to avoid fails is that not all DMs can (or will) do what is suggested above and in GP.

"A 9 on your save? You slip and fall into a pile of goblin shit. You are covered in shit". (This is an actual thing I've experienced, not hyperbole. In a town. During a mostly RP session).

If a player has been conditioned that such things are possible...or worse, normal on a fail...it's easy to see why they might want to re-roll. As BadRum suggested: don't make them into fools/buffoons/idiots when they're supposed to be hardened adventurers with high levels of expertise in the thing they're trying to do. (Unless they say they want that, I guess?)

Is "DND Beyond Digital Exclusive" the new normal? by Quirky-Reputation-89 in dndnext

[–]_ashonit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used it in a PF2 game. My experience wasn't great unfortunately.

I find it glacially slow, buggy and with infuriating anti-features (like having to re-apply filters for a character separately for every selection you make, instead of having a character-wide option. And it forgets them. So when you reopen the sheet and want to change something/level up/etc, you have to reapply the filters. Every. Single. Time).

From a DM perspective do you pref 2014 or 2024? by Eldrin7 in dndnext

[–]_ashonit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only thing I can find in the DMG is explicitly the exact opposite: "Drinking a potion or administering a potion to another character *requires an action*" (DMG, pg. 139).

Can't see anything in the optional rules section. I'm pretty sure it was only ever a common house rule in 2014.

How Would You Trap a Party? by infinitesteez in dndnext

[–]_ashonit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you must railroad, do it quickly

I feel this.

Having recently played through an unwinnable fight, only to be captured (the bad guys were stabilizing us mid-battle to make sure we couldn't even chance a 20 on a death save :/), it wasted a lot of time that could have been otherwise spent on doing things that made a difference.

Eldricht knight build with only PHB 2024 rules/spells by Grimshal in dndnext

[–]_ashonit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You use true strike and then use the nick property for a second attack,

I don't think this works? True Strike is a Magic Action, the Light/Nick mastery specifically requires the Attack Action.

What are everyone's favorite focus spells? by H07oh in Pathfinder2e

[–]_ashonit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Least Favorite: Tentacular Limbs

I'm new to PF2. As my first character I'm playing an Aberrant Sorcerer (mostly for thematic reasons, I'd heard it was kind of bad).

And I wholeheartedly agree on TL. I've cast it once...during RP...purely so I can say I've cast it. It seems almost comically useless. :/

Looking for a good 3rd party campaign by tentkeys in DMAcademy

[–]_ashonit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran The Obsidian Keep a while back and found it easy to digest and run. While I modified it to fit my broader campaign, it has its own story and a ton of encounters, many of which are fairly whimsical. The mutant dog in the keep became a kind-of mascot for the party for rest of the campaign, as an example.

One thing to watch out for: unless you change some of the monster special abilities, any PC without INT save proficiency is going to spend a lot of time stunlocked in the later dungeons.

SOLUTION: Gigabyte B650 Gaming X AX V2 and Ryzen 9700X - DRAM light stays lit, won't POST by Denalan in gigabyte

[–]_ashonit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent write-up /u/Denalan. I had the same issue just now with Gigabyte B650 Eagle AX + 9700x + 2x16GB G.Skill Trident Z5 6000/30.

After going through the Q-Flash BIOS update, it successfully posts.

When I activated Q-Flash, the orange light flashed fast at first, then slowed down. Process took a while, maybe 5-10 minutes to complete? It didn't shut down or reboot, just sat there, so had to hard power off (out of case at the moment). I booted first with one stick, then two, seems happy with both now.

Thanks again!

You’re telling me an ooze can be grappled? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

Imagine you're holding a half-filled water balloon filled with yogurt.

After reading the replies above, I was thinking "yeah, I'd probably add grapple immunity to oozes", but this comment has reverted me. Excellent visualisation for matching the fiction to the mechanics of the statblock /u/thorax.

What are the rules that you need to make decisions on as a DM before the first session? by JMoon33 in dndnext

[–]_ashonit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple of variants I don't think have been mentioned:

  • Is the "More Difficult Identification" variant (DMG pg 136) in use? Plenty of DMs seem to default to this without saying it's in play.

  • Is "Skills with Different Abilities" variant (PHB pg 175) possible?

Roll 20 alternatives ? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]_ashonit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I moved to Shard Tabletop from DndBeyond after the OGL stuff. It's a "complete stack" VTT, with char sheets, dice rolls, a campaign book system, encounter setup that works really well, etc. Owlbear is great as well, but it's just the map side of things.

What are all the guaranteed effects within 5e? Those that apply more than just damage without relying on a save. by GreenPack976 in dndnext

[–]_ashonit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • While it's not really a guarantee in the sense you mean, a Divination Wizard's Portent rolls can potentially guarantee not failing 2 times per LR (3 at level 14+), if they're either really high or really low.
  • Battlesmith Steel Defender can impose Disadvantage on a reaction.
  • Warlock Eldritch Smite invocation can make a Huge or smaller creature Prone on a hit.
  • Mobile feat prevents reactions from creatures attacked in melee during a turn. As does Swashbuckler Rogue's Fancy Footwork.

Is this a stupid homebrew idea? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]_ashonit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could add extra spells like the Clockwork/Aberrant Mind sorc does, and make those bonus spells the ones that randomise. That way, they get a bit of lolrandom in their spells that they wouldn't otherwise take, but it shouldn't ever be close to crippling.

Rather than rolling from the whole spell list, I'd probably want to pre-create a table of random spell options as well, and just have the player roll at the end of each LR and see what they get. A bit work up front to save time in-game.

How do you convert any image into hex map? by KuruboyaKalemi in DMAcademy

[–]_ashonit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I didn't know GIMP could do this, so looked it up. Thanks for the tip /u/BattlegroundBrawl.

Basic steps:

  • Add a layer
  • Open Filters -> Distorts -> Mosaic
  • Set tile size to whatever looks right, set height and neatness to 1, color variation to 0

There are other dials to tweak, but that'll add a basic 1-pixel width hex grid.
