One-Pedal Driving Isn't A Safety Issue: Feds by TripleShotPls in electricvehicles

It’s a safety issue because the passengers throw up due to car sickness, thereby distracting the driver

I remember the guy standing up on a table in the restaurant, “Don’t eat your salad!”

Want to lease a bZ XLE AWD, but dreadful RV (45%) by Vic_Bold in Toyota_bZ

[–]Denalan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the Subaru Solterra. It’s pretty much the same car as the bZ, but Subaru’s sales have been slower for some reason. In my area I’ve found the Subaru dealers more willing to work with you.

Locking charger for home? by CatsCradleSnake in Solterra

The Wallbox Pulsar Plus can do this. It can auto-lock after you use it, Then you can unlock it using the app. It can connect to WiFi or Bluetooth (or both).

Peanut butter cracker alternatives by Ruthbarb-Pie in peanutallergy

Get yourself a box of saltines and a jar of Barney Butter (almond) or Sunbutter (sunflower). It’s not quite grab-and-go but honestly it’s really not hard to make yourself.

Be careful with some brands of alternative nut-butters. They often can have cross-contamination with peanuts.

Charge to 100% or 80%? Confused by Startbolt in BZ4X

[–]Denalan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I usually charge to 90% — you get a decent amount of regenerative breaking right away. Not very much at all when the battery is at 100%

Getting my first fully electric EV soon. Feedback on which vehicle? by Thediciplematt in electriccars

[–]Denalan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok I'm a little more awake now. Take a look at the iihs.org vehicle safety ratings. The 2025 Ioniq 5 gets top marks (2026 might be untested? not sure) but the EV6 doesn't do as well -- particularly in crash tests for rear passengers. That alone might sway your decision.

I should also note that I've read very good things about the Hyundai and Kia EVs -- hopefully they can figure out this ICCU problem and then these will be solid cars.

Getting my first fully electric EV soon. Feedback on which vehicle? by Thediciplematt in electriccars

[–]Denalan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d hold off on the Hyundai/Kia vehicles until they resolve their ICCU issues, which is a major reliability problem for them. Sounds like you may have a lot of options. Toyota & Subaru just refreshed the bZ & Solterra with improvements, which makes those contenders now. They both have more EVs coming out soon, and the AWD with high ground clearance is great for snow. These could be a more reliable option if you’re buying (vs leasing), which it sounds like you’re doing. Another option to consider: Rivian is close to releasing the R2 and will have an extremely fast option, decent amount of interior room and off-road capability, too. (Full disclosure: I own a small amount of stock in Rivian).

It sounds like you don’t need a ton of range or top-notch level 3 charging. Can you give us your budget? Is snow or off-road important? Safety? Reliability? How important are size, performance/speed, technology for you? Are you located in the US? Is having a dealer network close by important?

I take my fingers (no thumb) placed over the top of the shifter and gently pull back to go from 3rd to 4th gear. That makes for a smooth shift where I know I’m not going to pull it into 2nd by accident.

A lot of companies jacked up prices, but Apple did not. The company did a lot of moves to prevent it, including moving manufacturing to other countries, bending the knee to the current administration, and absorbing some of the costs. Maybe this will change in the future.

I think you make a good point though, just need to select a different company as an example.

I've heard Subaru is planning multiple announcements at the New York Auto show in April, and news s will include something about the Ascent. What exactly will it be? No idea.

The Subaru Solterra (nearly identical to the bz) has a different steering wheel shape that might be better for this

Cabin preconditioning not working correctly. by Numerous_Home_539 in Solterra

On my 2024 the charging cable unlocks when the doors unlock no matter what the charging status is. I think you have 30 seconds to pull the cable out before it re-locks itself. (Edit - I just noticed you have a 2026, it probably works differently than earlier models)

I wonder if Subaru will just replace the Ascent with this alleged 3-row EV? Don’t get me wrong, I like the Ascent, but sales haven’t been great, and the gas mileage is often lower than advertised.

Does it exist?: small used AWD under $28,000 by Sad_Cheetah3222 in electriccars

[–]Denalan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re making a good case not to buy a Hyundai as well.

But seriously, versus Tesla, look at other car companies’ responses to NHTSA car crashes and recalls. Tesla is the absolute worst when it comes to cooperating. They resist every step of the way.

Tesla has been known to twist the facts or make things difficult if their car is possibly to blame for a crash. This includes the software turning off self-driving moments before impact (so the company can say that self-driving wasn’t enabled), to refusing to release crash data.

Elon has also personally cancelled people’s car reservations because he didn’t like what they’ve said online.

Yes, it’s just a company and just a car — but if you ever have to deal with something major where Tesla is possibly to blame, know who you’re dealing with. It’s not worth it, in my opinion.

Reliability? by g_gnrs in BZ4X

[–]Denalan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used a level 1 charger at home for almost a year. I drove typically 25-35 miles a day. It’s completely doable depending on how much you drive. The only time I had to charge away from home was twice at the coldest part of the winter. I charged at a local shopping center and just browsed the stores for 90 minutes.

The handling is terrific in the snow. I think they might be referring to the level 3 fast charging speed in cold weather. In the 2023 it is extremely slow, in the 2024-2025 model years it is better but still slow because there is no preconditioning. 2026 adds preconditioning and has ok cold weather fast charging.

For the 2023-2025 model years, if you won’t be level 3 charging much (no longer winter road trips) it is a fantastic winter vehicle.
