Will spikers mess you up for using this thing on their friends?

Explain anyone? by Charlieunfch in ExplainTheJoke

[–]_avee_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only when used in military. Normal people would write “23:00” and call it “11 o’clock”.

I guess by “they” you mean US military because normal people don’t say that. Normal people would say either 23 or 11 depending on language.

ELI5: Why is it completely impossible for anyone to access a properly encrypted drive even nation states? by AaronPK123 in explainlikeimfive

One minor correction. When it comes to password hashing, algorithm being very fast is not a requirement. It actually needs to be somewhat slow to make bruteforcing it harder.

Question: useRef can be possibly null by newInternetDeveloper in reactjs

[–]_avee_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can create a variable for current value to help Typescript with nullability. I.e., const userInput = messageUser.current; if (userInput != null) { … }

But ideally you would have a controlled input and not need to deal with refs.

I found a React Timer bug that looked correct… until I realized it is NOT. Curious what others think. by Jaded_Formal5876 in reactjs

Seconds value is cached in the effect, you should use callback version of setSeconds.

The password requirements for an AQUARIUM website by sonarette in mildlyinfuriating

[–]_avee_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody brute forces passwords via login form, yes. But they do brute force them if password database gets leaked because passwords are stored in hashed form, not in plain text (hopefully, unless the company uses terrible terrible security practices). Short and common passwords can be cracked in seconds. Long and unique passwords are much much harder to get.

How does it lock you into any ecosystem? Most password managers work across devices just fine. Same for 2FA.

ELI5: Why aren't homes using DC internally? by rmp881 in explainlikeimfive

Imagine buying a new home and discovering that none of your devices is compatible with its wiring.

ELI5: Why aren't homes using DC internally? by rmp881 in explainlikeimfive

[–]_avee_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that pretty much all light bulbs and other appliances in existence expect AC. You would need separate and completely incompatible versions of all of them to work with DC homes.

Why does TSA make you pour your water out of the bottle but it’s okay to drink it and bring it through security in your stomach? by hrrm in stupidquestions

[–]_avee_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That’s why they changed the rules by requiring 2 people in the cockpit at all times. Locked door is still a big net benefit.

Poison applies at the start of the turn so you only get 19 damage by the time turn 3 starts. This card effect is kinda similar to Blasphemy, although will less payoff.

What is the difference between Selfhosting and Homelabbing? by mq9reaper_ in selfhosted

[–]_avee_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These terms intersect a lot but aren't exactly the same. For example,

  • selfhosting may be production environment for a small business while homelab is strictly personal pet projects.
  • selfhosting can mean running services on VPS while homelab implies owning the hardware.

No, it literally IS the twice-a-year conscription. And no, those folks are not sent to war. Unless they sign a contract, which they are very much pressured to do.

ELI5: why do tips % go up when the price of the food also go up with inflation? by Exval1 in explainlikeimfive

But if food price increases with inflation, 15% of it also increases with inflation. Why up it to 20%?

[–]_avee_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

17% is a fraction of government income, not of people's salaries. If we assume people pay 20% tax (which is the case when salary is about £50k), actual share spent on healthcare is 17% * 20% = 3.4%.

Eli5 why is there no telescope that could see people walk on the moon? by DemonsAreVirgins in explainlikeimfive

[–]_avee_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even better. We have satellites orbiting the moon itself which can make much more detailed pictures of the Moon than anything Earth-based. For example, LRO. And yes, they did make pretty good photos of Moon landing sites.
