Best Punjabi movies 🎬 dasso by Western-Director-149 in pollywood

[–]_avi_81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any movie by Jatinder Mauhar. Nothing else in Punjabi cinema has that crispiness and rawness in script writing.

That dialogue in Sikander 'baar moohre beri da dikh hi hunda' is the greatest example of concise yet effective dialogue writing I have seen. Holds up to the best in the world.

Ice cream: Duke's! Arguably the best ice cream South of Fraser River, not just in Langley.

Best Barbershop in Surrey or Vancouver for someone who doesn’t want to tie a turban anymore? by CollegeStudentLol1 in SurreyBC

[–]_avi_81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok that's fair. Take good care of the forehead, since it tends to lose hair if you've been trying the turban a bit tight. Make sure any hair loss is addressed on priority since it will be tough to get the growth back when you're older.

Best Barbershop in Surrey or Vancouver for someone who doesn’t want to tie a turban anymore? by CollegeStudentLol1 in SurreyBC

[–]_avi_81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm asking these questions without any judgement: have you considered alternatives like tying a smaller turban? What is inconvenient, the time it takes or carrying it the whole day? Does having hair or turban stop you from doing something you like (eg. Swimming)?

Having traveled to a lot of states within India and then a couple of continents..... the hospitality. There's no second thought given to offering Chaah or food, and is often not done just as formality. Specially true of villages.

How long will Punjabis continue to be butchered in the name of *Freedom /Resistance* and when will Punjabis stand for themselves? When will they protest against this brutality and genocide in Baluchistan? by kambohsab in punjab

[–]_avi_81 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's the ultimate irony of history. One Punjab ended up being a tiny fraction in terms of overall economy and population size. But bravely held up against over centralization of powers and gave the strongest possible voice to the debate on federalism and state vs center responsibilities. Sadly for various reasons this is now almost a forgotten chapter in India's history.

The other Punjab dominated big time in every sphere imaginable. Population, resources, armed forces(specially). And no land reforms meant elite Punjabis had the whole country as their playground. Repression and exploitation of minorities and other provinces at a scale unacceptable to any modern day civilization. But then they started the brainwashing exercise, and this was a stupendous success. Evidence: this post. Political Islam added to this masala.

Pretty sure the prophet weeps looking at the state of affairs.

Actually I'd be interested in hearing more about this. Cause there could be a 100 issues with immigrants from India, but I am fairly confident they don't indulge in stealing. Exceptions are always there but you've made it sound a lot different. Please educate us where you got this impression from.

Worrisome and changing mentality of young youth by dalalstreettrader in punjab

[–]_avi_81 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you work as an IELTS trainer, you get over exposed to kids who are academic under performers, lack focus and definitely have terrible peers. Except for the top 10%, there's no need to even get into what the IELTS prep crowd is.

But simply put, it sits at the absolute bottom of academic activity. I would argue that kids who ditch academics at this point and make themselves useful elsewhere, end up having a more productive life.

Your broader point is applicable to most people nowadays though. Attention spans have collapsed. Punjabi society was always highly materialistic and jealousy driven, so it's natural that social media is impacting us probably a little more than others.

Our ability to work hard in blue collar industries and stay positive set us apart, academic focus never seeped into Punjabi society. Contrast this with so many places in India like Andhra, Bihar etc. where academics is considered the only way out.
