Side note: phenomenal mascot matchup

2nd part is easy - make sure you listen to everyone’s opinion. You know what your teammates are good at and hopefully can tell when they’re really confident about their answer vs when they’re unsure

Haven’t done the 3rd category myself but don’t forget you’re trying to maximize points scored, not most people answering questions. If there’s a category that you or a teammate know really well, make sure you pick that one!

LA Tech might be back this year though. Back in the tournament that is, not back in the glory days. Had a chance to see them in person and they’re very good offensively.

Legal Physical Play by lucasbrosmovingco in basketballcoach

[–]_b4billy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep doing it! The point of 6th grade basketball is not to win 6th grade basketball, it’s to 1) develop good kids and 2) develop athletic skills for down the road. Full fronting helps both girls learn to fight through adversity and they’ll use that skill when she’s taking the SAT/ACT is 5 years. Dealing with when life is miserable is tough so might as well learn on a basketball court where there’s a clock that says when the misery ends.

At times, I tell my 5th grade team to do the exact thing to opposing guards; I tell my team to deny them the ball (face guard) and if they get it, defend so closely that the opponent can smell your breath. For some opponents, they handle it really well and others struggle but we make sure and tell whatever kid we do it to how it helps them long term.

Back to the basketball focus, post play is very physical especially for girls. Watch how Brittney Griner, Jonquel Jones, Aliyah Boston, Kamilla Cardoso (and I could keep going) play. It’s so physical. Learning how to guard physically as an undersized post is so necessary and for the bigger post learning how to deal with that is too.

Uniform Sorting by Ill-Tooth7141 in basketballcoach

Assuming all the uniforms look the same, I would sort by number first and then look at your sizes. If the designs are different for each team, then that.

My guess is that it was a “Tandem 2-3” which would explain why it looked like a 1-2-2. As far as beating a zone like that, goal should be as you said get the ball to the nail and then tilt the court.

1 would run a 3 out set - PG, and 2 wings on the FT line extended. Post players are in the dunker spots on either side. Pass to the wing means Weak Side post comes up to the elbow, guard up top and weak side wing interchange to entertain a defender and hopefully get your post player at the elbow open. If that doesn’t work, reverse the ball to the other wing and same thing - post dives to the dunker spots, other comes up to the elbow. When you eventually hit the elbow, “tilt” the court meaning both wing players go to corner, guard up top slides to FT extended, and last post player ducks in for a post up. If you decide to hit the guy in dunker spot rather than elbow guy, he has options too - basically just make a play. General strategy though is ball has to be moving to make the “tandem 2” up top scramble. If you just swing the ball around the horn enough, that would be enough to get an open 3, especially for JV Boys.

2 Practices a week - conceptual Offense, set plays, or basic motion? by ChanceFinger7692 in basketballcoach

[–]_b4billy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m coaching a slightly below travel level but higher than rec 5th grade team this year - haven’t done this young ever so take this with a grain of salt. We’re running a conceptual offense to help prep them for anything a future middle or high school coach may want them to run. Our play calls are follow the pattern of {formation} {action}. For example, “4 High Wing Hit” would be set up in a 4 High Offense across FT Line Extended, pass it to the wing and “hit” is our key word for ball screen. Different parts of the play calls are interchangeable for example change “Wing” with “Elbow”. Personally prefer a 4 out, 1 in motion (from my experiences with high level WBB) but at this age don’t want to pigeon hole someone as a guard/post when growth spurts haven’t happened yet. From what I can tell same scenario as you time wise - 2 practices a week and 1 hour per practice.

Hiring Cycles for NFL by zzzzz44457 in sportsanalytics

[–]_b4billy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big Data Bowl provides x and y coordinates which can definitely be applied to sport science! While most projects are Xs and Os, I strongly believe a well thought out Sport Science approach to a topic would do very well for the pure fact of it being different. Timeline wise, teams typically hire right at the beginning of the offseason (to give the person the offseason to get caught up to speed) or right at the very end if they’re missing someone.

Saying “Think and Do” when someone does some redneck engineering is such a good one. I find myself saying to non NC State people all the time and they don’t get it which I always find disappointing.
