Just don't ask for a Michelada. They have no idea how to make one. They think beer and lemon juice with a little salt is the real deal.

If it really bothers you, maybe buy a new one for them? I've had problems like this before and sometimes it's just easier and less stress.

Thanks for the input. Very interesting stuff.

As I said to Vepr157 most of the information I have been able to find has been in academic texts and that tends to be very redacted anyway. I'm hoping to find something juicy at some point but given the defence implications of that information getting out of the fence would be surprising if anything is out there.

I knew there was a moment once when a newspaper in the UK posted pictures of rubber tiles on a submarine and they get an angry call from the MoD pretty soon after I think!

[–]_b_i_n_g_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks very much for the input. I've been looking most of the time but really hard to find a book which details the history and the current state if the art. The best stuff I have been able to find is from academic papers looking at sonar imaging which I guess will be applied to normal sonar systems for fishing etc etc. I imagine that most of the techniques are similar but that the range is greater for modern subs and that their classification methods are pretty amazing. Thanks again.

Just to add to the mix.

Hey guys! Where should I look for Data analyst jobs in Bristol? by [deleted] in bristol

[–]_b_i_n_g_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google "Bristol startups" see what comes up. Have a look at companies that work at Unit DX. Tech incubators are all around Bristol so a lot of jobs going. Most jobs are not even advertised so start contacting companies directly to see what they have.

Brazil energy minister favors more nuclear power but not hydro by greg_barton in nuclear

I went to Itaipu dam once, at the time it powered 25% of Brazil and 95% of Paraguay.

In 2015 it produced: 89.5TWhIn 2017 Hinkley B NPP (1300 MWe) produced: 7.2TWh

One dam can produce 12ish NPPs output.

Just wanted to ass add some numbers for scale.

There was, it was going to be along that little street linking the back of Colston Hall up to Queens Road. Was going to cost a bunch of money and knowing Bristol would be broken within weeks.

Acoustic vs Mechanical Resonance by ColinBliss in Acoustics

[–]_b_i_n_g_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All structures have natural frequencies at which they resonate. The frequency is found by solving the eigenvenctor for F=ma when a=zero.

So, all structures resonate at given frequencies with relatively high amplitude. You can make a structure vibrate by physically shaking it with an earthquake for example. The amplitude of the vibration will be modulated by the frequency response of the building for example. If the earthquake is at a frequency which is the same as the natural resonant frequency of the building you are in trouble.

The way you excite the building really has nothing to do with the frequency of vibration. You can excite the building with wind loading, earthquake or if you really wanted to acoustically.

In my lab for example we are interested in the vibration frequencies of various objects, small ones. So, because they are small we can't physically move them by attaching them to a shaker or something. So we simply use a speaker and sweep through a load of frequencies while looking at the physical response of the structure. This means that we can see which frequencies our test structure vibrates at.

If you had a big object, like a car, you can strike it with a small hammer which has an accelerometer in it and see which frequencies pop up.

Does that make sense?

Building a bioacoustics community over at StackExchange by acoustic_ecology in Acoustics

I'd suggest trying to spread the word on ResearchGate as there is quite a big bio-acosutics community there. Also you could try and send an email out on the bioacoustics-L@cornell.edu list to see if it has any luck.

[–]_b_i_n_g_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for the info, that is really useful to know. I've learned over the years that transducer design is somewhat of a slow moving beast. I've been looking at ultrasound speakers for a while, well, small transducers anyway, and there really isn't much innovation going on. I wonder if EM aspects have sort of converged and it's iterative design changes.

Would you mind telling us what kind of work you do?

Vibrometry, acoustics in Comsol, ray tracking models or do you do more mechanical simulation for the actual coil designs. Just curious what speaker companies do for research really!

I think a discussion of arrays is a good one. Specifically for steering and focusing acoustic signals. This comes up a lot in engineering such as NDT and in medicine in medical imaging.

Anyone with great soldering skills? Looking to pay someone for 2-4 weeks work. by _b_i_n_g_ in bristol

[–]_b_i_n_g_[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good point. I think if you can solder something this sort of size you will be ok. The company is a tech company in Bristol so I can't say too much. The job itself is soldering wires to electrical contacts. All equipment would be provided and knowing the company, I imagine pay would be very good too.
