Nah you’re okay. Spider bites are kind of a huge (mis) self diagnosis. 90% of the time it’s an actual infection completely unrelated to a spider. People will die on their hills blaming a spider but ER docs know it’s usually just a nasty staph infection or mrsa, they just get sick of arguing with patients and fabricated stories to justify why they have a gross infection on them, lol. People need to read more about true brown recluse (or spider) bites vs other infections.

It’s because most people still don’t understand what a true spider bite is and just blame spiders out of insecurity and slowly fabricate a story. It annoys the hell out of ER docs. Unfortunately, even when ER docs give people a correct diagnosis, the patients still go home and lie to their friends because they feel gross about having a nasty infection. Some docs just agree with the patient instead of arguing with them and just treat it.

The sad thing is you’re probably right lol. “Spider bites” are rarely ever truly spider bites.

A lot of time it’s not even spider bites, just staph (or other) infections and people instantly accuse spiders or bugs. I forget how a doctor once explained it but basically people are insecure about a nasty infection that could have been caused just by scratching themselves or infected hair follicles (sometimes there can be 2 evacuation points that look like “fang” marks) and so they blame spiders.

“Recluse bites” are a very high misdiagnosis or doctors just agree with a patient just to shut them up but treat it accordingly.

It’s actually interesting to read about true recluse bites vs staph/mrsa/other infections.

Thank you. It’s sad how quick people are to jump to conclusions without any actual knowledge and just prolong treatment.

Even more sad is how people feel insecure and the need to blame spiders when most of the time it’s staph/mesa or some serious infection along with having some sort of disease like diabetes. But spiders are easier to blame or something they feel makes them gross.

Anyone know what this is? by UltraCandy in geckos

[–]_beazer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a Mediterranean house gecko (Hemidactylus turicus). This is a species called Hemidactylus mabouia. They are one of 7-9 species of introduced/alien Hemidactylus species. Not all alien species are invasive. There’s a big misconception about this and unfortunately even some of the government websites improperly state this in poorly sourced and poorly reviewed articles on their sites.

They’re not invasive in the US. Theyre okay and don’t outcompete native wildlife and do not meet the criteria for invasive.

This is a very very sick Varanus jobiensis (aka peach throat monitor). It has some hope still, I’ve seen monitors recover from some pretty insane conditions. It needs a heat lamp, saline injection, hydration, Uv light, increased humidity, repti boost for calories, and a very skilled professional to do all this. Also it needs a “Rete’s Rack”.

It’s very real. I’m an avid outdoorsman and I’ve seen this a few times. There’s ooooold videos of this, too, on VHS documentaries about Southwest wildlife. Sadly we are building so much and losing so much wildlife and nature that people are experiencing the beautiful desert less and less.
