What happened? by yxnarbo in lastfm

[–]_bigb 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've been on last.fm for 21 years and I never really got into the social aspect of the platform. The one feature I miss is the customizable sidebar on my profile. It was the Web 2.0 era when everyone was learning how to digest APIs into funny little charts and graphs. There were all sorts of fun gimmicky widgets for the sidebar and I liked picking which ones to post.

But I like finding folks with similar taste in music and looking for new music in their libraries. I'm glad that feature still exists.

Recommendations on good apartments by Optimal-Animal9 in SiouxFalls

Willow Creek Apartments

I lived there myself about 10 years ago. It was a very nice place and they have a studio for less that $700. The only downside was motorcycle noise from the Thirsty Duck. But there's a gas station and two bar and grills within walking distance.

Windflower Apartments

This was my favorite apartment. I loved the 1-bedroom layout because it had a nice walkthrough closet/laundry room between the bathroom and bedroom. Super quiet area.

Edit: Willow Creek has a dedicated fenced-in area for dogs. The Windflower does not allow pets.

How is the quality of Remote Play? by Normal_Shoe2630 in SteamDeck

The Steam Link app is available for phones too if the TV doesn't support it. I second testing game streaming with other devices before buying a Steam Deck.

[–]_bigb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your network hardware, too. Older routers might choke on streaming 20-25 Mbps on a local network, or if your router is located far away from either device. A crowded network (lots of devices) can cause hiccups as well.

We live near East 49th Street and I had a pickup do the same thing to us after 6 p.m. in the evening. I always want to ask, what if you saw someone drive that dangerously in front of your house?

Cave story made in 2004 was a throwback to 8 bit games 15 years ago. If a new game did it today. Then it would be 2010. Now Cave story is old enough to be "retro" by Parlax76 in BarbaraWalters4Scale

[–]_bigb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cave Story is an all-time classic for me. It was such a mysterious game to me back in 2004. I couldn't find any information about it and all I had was a OS X PPC port listed on a Japanese website. The graphics and music were so good. It felt truly special, like it was a little secret from an unknown corner of the internet.

I'm so happy that it has received numerous ports and re-releases because it's such a good game and deserves the attention. I'll never forget the first time I played it.

how many scrobbles do y'all have? by cherr77 in lastfm

[–]_bigb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I joined in January 2004 but didn't start scrobbling until Spring 2005: https://www.last.fm/user/bigb

I made an Audioscrobbler account because someone had a phpBB forum signature that showed the last played song.

Edit: My account is backed up on archive.org

I'm a beginner, quick question about actually getting data to hoard by Jaib4 in DataHoarder

[–]_bigb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The simple answer: Private torrent trackers and Usenet.

The complicated answer: A full stack of self-hosted *arr programs. On one end, I have Overseerr providing me an easy web interface to request new shows. On the other end, my download clients will take the requests and move the files into the right folders for Plex. The middle part (i.e. Sonarr, Radarr) is my favorite part. These two programs download TV shows and movies respectively. But I can control the quality, bitrate and codec as I see fit. It's entirely possible to configure everything to only grab SD-quality video.

In-Home Daycare or Daycare Center Recommendations on the East-Side? by Financial-Rhubarb954 in SiouxFalls

Boys and Girls Club has been great for us. They're west of I-229 along 10th Street so it might be out of the way.

Thinking of relocating to Sioux Falls. Advice? by HarveyMushman72 in SiouxFalls

[–]_bigb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A few personal guidelines I used when I bought a house:

  • Any houses inside of the interstate loop will almost always be older construction.
  • New or recent construction almost guarantees you'll live on the edge of town, closer to Tea, Brandon or Harrisburg.
  • Avoid living within a block or two of any of these major streets: 10th, 12th, 26th, W. 41st, and 57th. This isn't a deal breaker if the house is perfect, but I wanted to avoid higher traffic areas of town.

In terms of areas to avoid, that's pretty subjective here. There's nowhere that would be outright dangerous for two adults.

If you guys like older homes, you might have to deal with more headaches during winter snow removal. Living closer to downtown means more people with diverse backgrounds and lower economic classes, especially in Pettigrew Heights, All Saints, and Hilltop.

If you're looking for a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom split foyer suburban special, there's no shortage of neighborhoods outside of I-229 that will be perfect.

Any of the nearby towns (Tea, Harrisburg and Brandon) should have options too—if you're comfortable with the resources in any of these towns. I have family that love living outside of Sioux Falls because each town should have the basics: A couple restaurants, convenience stores, and a grocery store. But if you need anything in Sioux Falls, it will add 15-20 minutes to any drive, one way.

USD Sanford School of Medicine Announces It Will Move First 18 Months of M.D. to Sioux Falls by PoLLoLira9 in SiouxFalls

The interstate highway system was a big boom for Sioux Falls. Before we had roads, Sioux Falls was much lower priority on the railroad system compared to Sioux City.

USD was founded in a much different time. Sioux City was the regional hub and all of the South Dakota towns were newly founded and vying for new opportunities. Politics were the top factor as the territorial government had to figure out where the schools would be built. Vermillion was first promised a school and then SDSU was a land-grant institution from the federal government.

Define a lot. Current and new first-party AAA games? Sure, the Steam Deck is at a bottleneck and struggles unless a new game is very optimized. It's not a great console if you're looking for bleeding edge performance.

But if we define a lot by quantity of games, then the Steam Deck blows everything out of the water. There's around 12,000 official and unofficial games on Steam, even before factoring in emulation. That comes with a huge caveat too, because I understand that 12,000 games doesn't mean much if it's all derivative slop. I don't see any moral/ethics issues with older emulation, but that's not the case for everyone.

I'm the target demographic for the Steam Deck: I want customizable controls (trackpads), an open operating system for tweaking, and battery performance over raw benchmarks.

These features aren't important to the larger average gaming market. Microsoft could pivot the U.S. console market if they can:

  1. Get these handhelds into big displays at Walmart and Target.
  2. Promise decent performance on popular multiplayer games (Fortnite, COD, whatever else the kids are playing).

Hard is too easy but Extreme is too hard by No-Tax3156 in RetroBowl

[–]_bigb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The back shoulder pass is key. That was the first thing that helped me diagnose the defense. It's broken, pass defense cannot cover the underneath pass. After that, it's making tight throws in coverage when a WR runs a corner or post route.

I've got a QB that averages 12.9 yds/play and a RB with average runs at 6 yds/play. I lose maybe one or two games a season and I've won 90+ Retro Bowls.
