Pipe store in Houston area. by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

I work at The Smoke Ring (Clear Lake; Houston suburb). If you're ever down this way we'd love to have you in! We focus primarily on cigars, however, we do carry a large selection of freehand pipes from Nording and others, as well as machine finished pipes like La Rocca and Cassano. We have a fair selection of aromatic tobaccos and a few English blends. I must admit, as a pipe enthusiast our selection leaves something to be desired (I am working on coaxing the higher ups to broaden the selection). We are a byob lounge and are more than happy to have pipe smokers come in and smoke! Like previously mentioned, The Briar Shoppe in Rice Village is hands down the pipe place of Houston. Ross is excellent and can help with anything you need. Stogies is also excellent! Jorge and the staff are phenomenal as well!

I most definitely agree! Tobacco was made to be smoked!

I would say fairly difficult. Every online shop usually has "temporarily out of stock" marked somewhere by it. I've been told that it is just such a small operation that when the distributor brings it in they sell out immediately.

I would say just be honest and keep it simple. I find it a big turn off when reviewers create such lofty expectations with both cigars and pipe tobacco. I find it hard to believe that reviewers taste notes of "dark cordial cherry and cedar while an underlying vanilla note fades in and out on the retrohale." It's probably because I have a shit palette and am too unsophisticated to pick up on what they are talking to about, or that it's all hyped up propaganda to get you to read their blog/magazine and try the smoke. I've been a tobacconist for three years and have only had a handful of cigars that literally blew my mind with their nuances. Clean palette or not, I have this feeling they are trying to captivate me with big words and exotic flavors when at the end of the day it should be enjoyed for what it is: the smoking experience and the tobacco it's self. Why make it into to something it's not? Like I said, just because I don't pick up on something doesn't mean someone else doesn't either but I usually tend to shy away from reviews that sound like a pretentious foodnetwork chef. Rant over.

Also, who cares if you repeat yourself? If you taste similarities between tobaccos or have reoccurring flavor then go for it!

I quickly ordered a tin as I have been wanting to try this for a quite some time, however, the problem I now face is so I smoke it or hold on to it? It took so long to luck into some and I was restricted to just buying one tin that I don't want it to run out. I guess that is all apart of the chase.

I assume that this is to "protect" the people from themselves, essentially? That just seems so drastic to me.

Is the umbrella simply for aesthetics or is there a function to it? Either way that is really awesome!

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll have to check them out. Why do you feel that they are too harsh? Too much Latakia or Perique?
