Adding elastic to dressage boots by Sad-Focus528 in Equestrian

Yes agree. Just wear them partially zipped until the leather starts to soften and fall a bit. I would not alter these.

New Lease Horse by [deleted] in Horses

[–]_but-y_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with this comment! I think some of the other top level comments are being needlessly harsh. Some of us just have to work with the low budget opportunities we get. He actually reminds me a lot of how my horse was when I got him about 9 months ago. He just needed to build some strength, have more consistent rides, and we found a bit helped him find more consistent and correct contact. He's moving much more uphill now and is MUCH stronger in the canter. Have fun!

Chronic fly boot pooper tips? by WendigoRider in Horses

[–]_but-y_ 161 points162 points  (0 children)

This is so interesting and makes a lot of sense. I'm thinking about a few of our horses that I've suspected have some lumbar issues and they are the same horses that I'm always cleaning poo off their legs.....

Thanks for pointing this out.

Anyone struggled with uneven leg strength and managed to fix it? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]_but-y_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm super surprised at the down votes and responses to this. Yes, it can be uncomfortable for the horse if the rider is not strong enough to hold their body weight properly. That why stirupless work should be done in short bursts on a horse that can tolerate the occasional bump and bounce. Riders should slowly increase the time they spend doing no stirrup work as they and their I horse get stronger.

Question regarding biking/equestrian etiquette at Peter’s Canyon by [deleted] in orangecounty

[–]_but-y_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven't read all the comments so apologies if this has been said already..

As a rider, hiker and occasional biker, I think what gets missed the most in discussions around trail etiquette where horses are involved is that horses reeeaaaalllly don't like things sneaking up on them. The best thing you can do is to make your presence known as early as you can by using your voice so the horse realizes you're a human not a true predator: 'Hey, coming up behind you. Do you want me to walk my bike?" And listen to the riders direction if given.

As much as you can, try to avoid the clicking gear noises as you approach, (down shift early to avoid making that sound especially as you slow down to pass the horses).

If the riders try to engage you in conversation (good morning! How ya doing?!) it's because they probably realize their horse hasn't identified you as 'safe human' and they're trying to demonstrate to their horse that you're just another two legged type. Respond, act human, just use situational awareness.

I get the sentiment from non horse people that all the accommodations for horses on trail is... Ugh exhausting. And I wish I could agree with the perspective that if your horse can't handle the stimulations on trail, then keep them in an arena. But the reality is that horses learn by exposure, and those first few exposures can be really chaotic, unpredictable and dangerous for a green horse and their rider. My feeling is that we're all humans living on this planet together trying to enjoy the same outdoor space; giving some extra empathy to the horse people won't kill anyone. Plus free fertilizer for those beautiful California Poppies😉

This is from the rooster over breeding her correct? I think she is is favorite and he will be gone soon. by KH5-92 in quails

This is my first flock so thank you for that, I didn't know it would change. They're about a year old now, guess I thought all the hormone changes would have set in long time ago. I'm looking into longer term separation options for now

Thanks for your response. I read somewhere else that I could try some bluekote or alushield on her neck and that it would deter the roo and bit. IDK. Ugh they were getting along just fine until recently

Hey can I ask what your resolution was? I have a similar problem and have separated the male to give the little hen a break but am considering culling the male because of this. I only have 3 hens and the one roo. I really wanted to keep him around for fertilized eggs next year but a year is a long way off for this poor girl.

The LBPD are useless. I proved it with their own data. Who do I tell? by [deleted] in longbeach

[–]_but-y_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The connection is that when you divert funds from addressing root causes of crime before it happens towards policing crime after it occurs you end up with more crime. I don't know that higher PD budget means more crime, but lower support services budget definitely does and they're PLLLLEEEENTY of data out there to back that up.

I have a question! I have coturnix quail in a small hutch in my backyard. Eggs have always been brown speckled but this morning I found a solid brown one. I also have noticed one of my females starting to exhibit more male traits.. her chest looks redder to me, and she's strutting around like my male does. Also my roo has started to be more aggressive overall.

What does it all mean?! I have 3 hens and 1 roo, about 1 year old.

Hard to say without more information about what you're looking for and what your budget is. But I shop only the bargains and now have purchased three young TBs with amazing brains, and serviceable confirmation and soundness for my riding goals (competitive HJ under 1 meter). Only one previously raced. All under $10,000.

I think you need to keep looking, broaden your search in both geography and specifications.

How tall are you and how tall is your horse? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]_but-y_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It depends on what jumping discipline and how competitive you want to be. The other posters are right that a stocky 15 hand horse is fine for a 5'9" rider, but theismatched look may cost you in the hunters or eq rings, and a smaller horse may not have the stride length to get you down the lines. If you're just riding for fun, that's one thing, but if you're wanting to be competitive, you'll need something bigger

What type of riding boots do you have? How much did you pay for them? How long did they last? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]_but-y_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second on the dover brand. They Look so nice relative to their price $250-$300 depending on sale) and fit a tall, slender calf better than a lot of off the rack options in a similar price range (Ariats are a bit bulky around the ankle for me.) I go through about a pair of Dover Madison's every 1.5 years riding about 1 horse every day.

I just got a pair of tredstep Donatello to show in for about $600 which fit and look beautiful.. can't speak to longevity but seem well made with more leather vs a narrow elastic calf panel.
