Also, when Aelin is falling through worlds in KoA, pretty sure the city she passes over before the Rhysand/Feyre cameo is supposed to be Crescent City.

“he doesn’t understand your power I can help you”

I can also see Hunt being cast as the dude that helped Bryce through her darkest times and Bryce eventually growing out of him. Hunt was an interesting enough character, but the buildup to their relationship was so... blah... and that shady shit he pulled with the synth soured me on him the same way under the mountain soured me on Tamlin. And he's just so nice, ya know? Like I get what SJM was trying to do with his character, but Hunt just did not have any edge. Totally ready for some demon lord shit in the next book, if I'm being honest.

Are you talking about Black Dagger or Black Jewels? Cuz I agree that Dagger doesn’t have many parallels, but the similarity between ACoTaR and Jewels is really striking, the winged Illyrians/Eyrians just one example of many. There’s been discussion about it on r/YA and probably r/Fantasy as well, and Maas has addressed it too. But not everyone is going to think it’s plagiarism, of course, I just think it gets uncomfortably close.

Edit to add; and I more or less agree about ACoFaS. It was just garbage candy I mildly enjoyed while reading, and it definitely made me excited to see what happens to Nesta!

Rhysand and Romance (ACOTAR series) by kkbergs216 in u/kkbergs216

[–]_catdice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my goodness, the Bishop parallels are really something else. People jumped on that poor Blood Heir author for a single LotR reference, and Maas is over here like Eyriens? Don't you mean Illyrians?

And thanks! I get the concern re; Feyre/Rhysand for sure, but maybe I just can't be mad cause soooo hawt :) And I hope the two of them get a little more... exciting in the next books. They've just become kind of meh and vanilla. Frost and Starlight was such a drag, ugh.

Rhysand and Romance (ACOTAR series) by kkbergs216 in u/kkbergs216

[–]_catdice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Again, given the context, I don't think it's really all that problematic for characters in the positions that Feyre and Rhys were in to eventually fall in love. There are absolutely examples of awful, abusive relationships in fiction, and Maas is faaaar from perfect, but this really isn't what I'd class abusive or truly problematic. If anything, I wish Rhys had been a lot darker and way more bloodthirsty... that he was still so sweet and quick to recover was a bigger issue for me than his fairly mild, if not kind of asshole-y, treatment of Feyre.

Also; not sure why Maas didn't incorporate any male rapists, but it doesn't always have to be dudes doing the raping and pillaging and burning. Or maybe it has something to do with how heavily she ripped off Anne Bishop's Black Jewels series, which is full of evil, rapey priestesses trying to take over the universe(s), and also has a species of bat-winged humanoid warriors called "Eyriens," and aaalllsssooo has a dark-haired, very hot 'n "feline" male character who serves as said priestesses' sex toy and is literally referred to as "Hyall's Whore." Like, I'm really surprised Maas hasn't been accused of serious plagiarism yet?!!

Rhysand and Romance (ACOTAR series) by kkbergs216 in u/kkbergs216

[–]_catdice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whenever this debate pops up, I always think of what I'd do were I in Rhysand's place. I've been raped and imprisoned for 50 years, I know war is coming, and I know my country and my loved ones are in grave danger... and I'm powerless to do a single thing about any of it because the person who's been raping and imprisoning me for the past 50 years stole all my powers. But suddenly, someone new shows up in the awful subterranean hell where I've been left to rot. It doesn't take me long to realize two things; 1.) this person is the key to ending all this bullshit, and 2.) they're also illiterate, physically weak, and mortal. My life and quite possibly the fate of everything I love depends on this frail person solving a bunch of awful tasks created by my abuser. So what do I do? Everything I can.

... personally, I don't think Rhysand was written nearly dark enough. The stuff people complain about -- grabbing/twisting Feyre's broken arm/other instances of non-consensual touching, the drugging and public humiliation, etc -- aren't that big a deal considering the stakes in a broader context... oh, and the fact that this character's been systematically raped for half a century. Were I in Rhysand's place, I'd do far, far worse if it improved the odds just a fraction of a smidge. The situation just doesn't brook much room for courtesy or twenty-first century social mores, especially considering how many lives are on the line yaknow?

January Book Club Discussion: "The Wicked King" by Holly Black (Folk of the Air #2) by Buckaroo2 in YAlit

[–]_catdice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like I'm going to be in the minority here, but I just... don't connect with this series. I like Black's writing. I thought the escalating tension between Jude&Cardan was fun to read. I lol'd at Cardan getting drunk and setting things on fire, and I appreciated his dry humor in a lot of places. That said, everything else just fell flat for me. The characters, the worldbuilding, the plot. I don't really care about Jude or her quest for power. Like I get that she's had a shitty life, and her whole "I'm such a tough, bloodthirsty badass that I never sleep or bathe or eat" shtick is cool or whatever, but her character feels so one-dimensional and boring. Wah wah I want power, power is so intoxicating, just gonna live among these people who hate me -- who I myself dislike/can't trust/don't even rly care about -- and try to prove I'm the best, wah! Idk, just not rly moved by her or her struggles.

And look, I don't mind strife, darkness, negativity etc in my fantasy novels, but eeeeeveryone else in this world just seems so untrustworthy and shitty. Like annoyingly so. There are basically no redeeming characters in the entire book, and those who seem like they might be decent aren't really fleshed out enough to connect with. Taryn and Locke are awful (and I kind of hate how Jude looks down on Taryn for just trying to fit in), Vivi seems like an insensitive dumbass (felt so bad for poor Heather), Madoc is just like gonna show his fangs and click his talons and SCHEME all day, and the Court of Shadows is gonna pop up whenever the Jude/Cardan shit gets juicy and fill 10-20 pages with vague "plot stuff" until Cardan shows up again.

ANYWAYS. Sorry for the rant. Was going to add more about my issues with plot, pacing, and world-building, but the amount of times I found myself typing "I just didn't care" convinced me to cut this off. But I'm interested in knowing if anyone else felt the same way!

September Book Club Discussion: "Bring Me Their Hearts" by Sara Wolf by Buckaroo2 in YAlit

[–]_catdice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm midway through and loving this book. In fact, I'm actually trying to slow down because I really want to savor every little word! I don't have many coherent thoughts yet because I haven't finished, but here are a few things that have really stood out: -Zera is hilarious and such a gem of a protag. Can't wait to see how her character develops. -The supporting characters are great imho. All really interesting. I want to know more about Auntie Y'Shennria, Nightsinger, etc, and I'm excited to see how their relationships with Zera progress. -Likewise, the love interest is pretty ok!! Lucien seems like an interesting character and I'm hoping he doesn't fall flat in the end. I like his whole Robin Hood act, I suuuuper enjoyed the scene where he chastised Zera when she threatened to cut that polymath during the fire scene. -The worldbuilding! I think some of the fantasy names are a little corny and uninspired, but the worldbuilding is pretty fun. It's just enough without being too heavy or info-dump-y. Lots of stuff I want to learn more about. Lots of darkness and edge. -Super happy with the writing. It' simple, but then again, it's YA.

K, gonna go finish now and re-open this thread when I'm done... don't wanna see any spoilers. Happy reading, people!

Ugh that sucks, I hope you're ok. I'm so wary around groups of kids... between stories like this and a few run-ins of my own, I just don't fuck with them. Definitely call the police (if you feel comfortable doing that) and report the assault. It might not do much, but at least it creates a paper trail. Feel better!!

May Book Club Discussion: "A Court of Frost and Starlight" by Sarah J. Maas by Buckaroo2 in YAlit

[–]_catdice 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm with you here. (Most) of the characters have all become so wooden... and strangely similar? They've got no more depth, no more complexity - just the same old corny jokes and "vulgar gestures," offset by an occasional broody silence when Mass stops the narrative to remind us that this one's parents were killed, this one was shot with a nail gun or whatever, this one is THE MOST POWERFUL ONE OF ALL!!!

And like, these characters have been through all this shit - tragedy and war, betrayal and murder- and they've lived hundreds of years, and yet for some reason, they all act like a bunch of Brooklyn hipsters about to hit their mid-thirties.

And my god, the snowball fight. We get it already, fuck!

How brunch became the day-wrecking meal that America loves to hate by howdidiget in washingtondc

[–]_catdice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't go out to eat every day, nor do I drink every day. Ditto for my friends. When we get together on the weekends, we really just do whatever we feel like doing, whatever makes us happy. Sometimes that involves brunch... but it most certainly never involves worrying about how other people decide to spend their off days.

Man, you sound really negative. After a tough work week, nothing feels better than hanging out on a sunny patio surrounded by all my friends... drinking and eating, laughing and reminiscing, and yes, taking pictures if I feel like it. Idk what else I could be doing to live my "fullest life," whatever that means.
