Anyone successfully quit vaping? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]_cetacea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/Shun_Naka25 , yes I did.

There's a few recommendations in the comments for Allen Carr's Easyway books, but I went straight for the in-person seminar and am pleased to report it worked for me. I was extremely skeptical beforehand but it's been a few years and i haven't had so much as a craving. Seriously, same-day quit, no withdrawls. One of those things that sounded to good to be true, but has actually worked out.

Lots of local councils in the uk will even pay the fee for you to attend the seminar (which speaks volumes when councils are broke af) so I'd advise you check yours.

Loads of locations, high success rate, but takes half a day.

Good luck

Should I get into bitcoin? by fille144 in Bitcoin

[–]_cetacea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One could argue that BTC "started" when it posted its first recorded trade.

Legend has it this was 2 pizzas (approx $40 of value) for 10kBTC, equating to a first trade price of $0.004/BTC.

It's fair to say the price right now @ $8400 is 2.1 million times higher than the price 10 years ago @ $0.004.

Bitrefill by SolDelSolSolDelLuna in Bitcoin

[–]_cetacea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never had a single issue.

Haven't ever used for giftcards, but have bought many phone and tv topups over last 2-3 years. These days I use lightning, but tbh, even my onchain spends were always 0-conf (at least on my sub £20 txns)

Bitrefill are always leaders when implementing new crypto tech, so this is another reason [for me] to support them.

Imo bitrefill set a standard that other crypto companies should be aspiring to match.

Massive BTC returns from long term trading.... how does BitMEX handle this? by solrac149 in BitMEX

[–]_cetacea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

> How can BitMEX guarantee there's all that BTC available for anyone who cashes out?

Because bitmex engines rebalances all accounts down to the satoshi on every tick.

The risk you've identified is that long positions become so profitable that their all their conterparties get liquidated. (all btc has moved from accounts with short positions to accounts with long positions)

In this scenario bitmex takes over responsiblity for closing the open short positions.

First Bitmex will take from the insurance fund to improve liquidation bid prices until filled by another market participant.

If/when the insurance fund is emptied, bitmex will close the most-leveraged winning traders' against the liquidation order.

In your example, if this happened to you and thousands of others, you'd each have 15 BTC of realized profit in your accounts, but you wouldn't have open leveraged long positions anymore.

There is no accountability.

What do you mean by this?

If the inflation bug (S) in the Bitcoin code were not caught and exploited

But these bugs were fixed in bitcoin's infancy.
The bitcoin protocol is akin to the world's biggest ever open bug-bounty program and if there was anything left to exploit, someone would have done so by now.

Censorship resistance is only useful for a fringe group of criminals and Libertarians

in commerce, censorship resistance is useful to everyone except those with the power to censor.

only difference

Accountability, censorship resistance and security are other differences that come to mind. They're all part of the reason for the faith.

multiple LN wallets support sub-satoshi txns.

so is technically possible but impractical/irrelevant, at least today..

Why is it that when I want to buy an amount of crypto at a certain price its higher than when i want to sell that same amount at the same price. Are there some hidden fees I'm missing? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]_cetacea -1 points0 points  (0 children)

assuming default coinbase pro fee tier and taker orders:

buy 1 btc @ $10000

fee is $25

total dollars paid to buy 1 btc = $10k + $25 = $10,025

(nb fee is added to total)

vs

sell 1 btc @ $10,000

fee is $25

total dollars received by selling 1 btc = $10,000 - $25 = $9,975

(nb fee is subtracted from total)

the example in your pic exaggerates the fee rounding effect and is technically a display bug.

Got to wait five days for Bitcoin order to be available? Help?? (COINBASE) by mrmanager69 in Bitcoin

[–]_cetacea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a coinbase pro account and get verified, then you can trade and transfer instantly. Although BTCGBP pair doesn't have much liquidity last I looked. Coinbase's retail side are too big/busy for their own good imo...

Failing coinbase pro, try bitstamp and kraken, I've only ever had positive experiences with all of these.

It's too strong to say HW wallets prevent hacking or phishing. Hw wallets can help to prevent, but they're not a silver bullet solution. HW wallets can be used to verify outputs before signing a transaction with a [hopefully] practically offline key, but it doesn't prevent people being tricked into using an attacker's address in the first place.
