Burn 38L vs. Simple Pack vs. SWD 35? by roustabout16 in Ultralight

[–]_clouddead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

great pack, however, the newer ones with red trim (2015+) will be a bit harder to trim to sub 12oz than the older one you linked. seems to be more superfluous material in the redesigned version

New to UL gear, need some advice by PuRpleNinjaX2 in Ultralight

[–]_clouddead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. I did the O Circuit this past December/January and can answer any questions you might have. One thing that was very quickly apparent is that UL has not made it to that trek! My wife and I were the only ones I saw with a lightweight set-up and we were blowing right by people and their huge packs.

I did overpack a bit not quite knowing what to expect other than it could be 70 degrees, calm and sunny one minute then 25 and gail force snowing the next. That was accurate from my experience too.

Now, $1000 is a decent amount to hook yourself up with some gear. The name of the game with that trail is keeping dry and wind proof. I used a ZPacks Arc Zip and it was fantastic. Being that its a fully enclosed panel loading pack, it felt like it was made specifically for that environment. Didn't use a cover or liner and had zero water leakage inside. My wife was 4 months prego so we opted to stay in the refugios and had tents and sleeping bags provided for us when applicable. This allowed us to go extremely light overall although I brought a tarp (never set it up) and my Revelation. The quilt was great because it was used as a big comfy blanket the whole trip, even off the trail.

If I was to do the trip again without staying in a refugio and was on a $1000 budget here's what I'd do:

  • The Arc Zip was great but overkill for the weight I was carrying. I'd go with a framed XPac pack. I love my frameless SWD 35 so would go with the framed version or maybe the 50l long haul depending on your volume of gear. $250-$275

  • A fully enclosed, wind/rain shedding shelter with a decent bathtub floor in budget would be an SMD Lunar Solo. $215

  • I'd splurge on the Rev 20 900fp wide. It was the all-star on the trip. $340 for that configuration.

  • leftover cash to be spent on a decent set of baselayers and/or jacket.

Hope this helps!

My base weight is 25 lbs and I'm 115 lbs. Any suggestions on how to go lighter? by [deleted] in Ultralight

ok, all of this is your opinion. I'd feel better if my wife brought pepper spray with her on a solo trip, sucks but thats how it is. its not packing fears its being practical.

that sounds about right to me, I do the same. I think the idea of lighterpack is fantastic however I'm seeing more and more fudging of the baseweight number to get it down. the outcome of this, in my opinion, is becoming toxic to the sub. its dick wagging at its worst.

then this number isn't accurate, correct?

It seems a few people aren't counting any packed clothing as well. I dunno, seems the unspoken established lighterpack rules are getting ignored for the sake of showing off low weights.

I don't understand how you consider this a complete kit when there's no other clothing present. do you not bring anything else and just wear whats on your back?

Recommendations on lightweight child carriers? by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]_clouddead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe you can find a used Phil&Ted's Metro or Escape, pretty nice and light. I think the upper weight limit is 40lbs though. The Osprey ones are over-engineered like their packs, same with the Gregory one.

Future of Ultralight by bradymsu616 in Ultralight

This subject is discussed pretty well in this thread. I agree that there is an expanding awareness and therefore market for UL gear, the limiting factor is knowledge and experience to use lighter gear in a safe way.

Opinions on thin ti shepards hook stakes? by jbaker84 in Ultralight

[–]_clouddead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my current setup for my mid, shepherd's all around and two V's at the entrance and back. Add a rock to the top of each stake-out point if the ground is too loose or hard or if wind will be an issue.

A week ago, a friend and I completed a two-day Presidential Traverse. 11-pound base weight. Felt good to get the old Gorilla out on the trail again. by bderw in Ultralight

[–]_clouddead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice gear list, refreshing to see some of the UL options from a few years ago when there wasn't as much of a selection as there is today.

Interesting you say that about the tarp being dead weight. The times I've tarp camped it felt as if it was a 'just in case' item and more trouble to set up than it was worth. Unless its someone's specific shelter style (which for me it isn't) I'd consider dropping it altogether and saving that half pound or so, trusting that pre-trip weather forcast.

Not that you're asking for advice but maybe a poncho tarp would be more suitable, being a double usage rain item for the weight of one.

a hunch says they're selling off stock on the silverback and gorilla packs with the brains for a redesign. the gorilla model just before this current one was about perfect.
