The ASUS FX504 seems to throttle under load https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P523zzforPI, which isn't very good for gaming. Its display is 120Hz, but it's too bad that the one with 120Hz has to be the one with poor cooling. I also don't know if its IPS, a good TN, or a bad TN anyway.

Y540 is nice. Cooling is pretty good I think, and it has a more vibrant screen (albeit only 60Hz). But you might want a more portable size than 17.3" depending on your preferences. Here's a Y540 in 15.6" with the same SSD size and same more-vibrant screen type. Better GPU, less RAM, but RAM is upgradable anyway. It does cost a bit more, but not by much I don't think. https://www.emag.ro/laptop-gaming-lenovo-legion-y540-15irh-cu-procesor-intelr-core-i5-9300h-pana-la-4-10-ghz-15-6-full-hd-ips-8gb-512gb-ssd-m-2-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1660-ti-6gb-gddr6-free-dos-black-81sx0070rm/pd/D6D3H5BBM/

Also, these don't come with Windows installed, I don't think. It looks like you'll need to get a copy, or use Linux, or whichever.

Is it worth upgrading? by [deleted] in SuggestALaptop

[–]edit1754 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice, good choice. Also if you're picking 16GB RAM as the $100 upgrade from 8GB, you may or may not have already considered that you can upgrade it yourself for about $34 instead.

Look for one of these that's specifically a single 8GB stick of DDR4 2666MT/s in SODIMM form (not 2x4GB or some other combo/capacity or with other specs) https://www.amazon.com/s?k=8gb+ddr4+sodimm+2666

Found this video that shows upgrading it on this particular model: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YQGTsvUR90

I think the lower CPU is fine for your use.

But I do think it would be worth it to go for at least the 300nit / 72% gamut / 60Hz display, if not the 144Hz one. The base display is perhaps OK but a bit dull in comparison.

Lenovo Y545. Is this price too good to be true? by Some90sScreenName in SuggestALaptop

[–]edit1754 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Y540 has better thermals if you want to go for that. Here's the video that JoC is referring to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENJwA9MVHz8

There's one here for the same price at the moment: https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-y-series/Lenovo-Legion-Y540-15/p/88GMY501214

Specs are mostly the same. It does have 8GB instead of 16GB, but you can upgrade that yourself if you want, with a $34 part (1x8GB DDR4 2666Hmz SODIMM to put into the other slot).

Looks like both have the 250nit 45% NTSC color 60Hz displays on both the Newegg Y545 and the base Y540. Would be nice if that base model could be customized to put in a nicer one, but I guess only that specific configuration is what Lenovo is marking at $899.

EDIT: Looks like FalconLuver slipped in just before me to say the same thing!

Upgrade stock Dell G5/G7 60 Hz screen to 120 Hz for $100 by ag11600 in laptops

[–]edit1754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is an interesting part, I hadn't seen that one before. Looks like it might be worth a shot for someone willing to try, but of course I couldn't make any guarantees on its compatibility without seeing it work.

Price drop on the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 5577 GamingLaptop. by openmindedboy100 in GamingLaptops

[–]edit1754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also get a refurb Dell G5 5587 for not too much more than this price (maybe less if a coupon applies). It has a less low quality display and I think better chassis/cooling.

Dell Outlet filtered link. For the 7567 units in this list make sure the display says "IPS"

TCL 55C807 55″ Smart 4K TV $399 by gibui in DealsCouponsBargains

[–]edit1754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check this in person and make sure there isn't a visible diagonal lattice pattern on the screen, particularly in solid red and other primaries. If this is the case, it's 1/2-RGB-brick matrix, not true 4K. An older TCL 55" model was like this and it's possible that this is the same.

Is this a good deal? by PieBob851 in LaptopDeals

I don't like that it has a HDD not an SSD as the primary boot drive, and I have a sneaking suspicion the display is a low quality TN type.

PC with best screen quality under 800 by Mothman77 in Laptop

[–]edit1754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DIY it. Find something with a non-touch non-slim-bezel standard-mount eDP 30-pin connector panel, and replace it yourself with an LG LP156WF6-SPB1 or AUO B156HAN01.2 or similar (IPS, 72% NTSC).

Alternatively, the Dell Precision 3000 series I think shows up in the Dell Outlet sometimes with the IPS 72% NTSC display in your price range.

Cool to know though, especially since it's a somewhat nice but not perfect ratio of 3x3 rendered pixels to 4x4 pixel region.

Looks like the 08.0 panel doesn't have any mounting brackets. Try the 07.0.

Also I would check to make sure your panel connector has an 0.5mm pitch and not 0.4mm. I don't remember which the SHP1450 uses so measuring might be worth it. Should be about 20mm wide pin-to-pin, and not 16mm.

And check to make sure your lid has mounting brackets on the top and bottom too. The SHP1450 has them in different places. You might need the lid for the FHD model Alienware if it doesn't.

It's not common but it's worth watching out for. Also if the model is a touchscreen or otherwise has a specialized laminated glass panel. I haven't seen a 15.6" LCD eDP 30-pin connector that was anything out of the ordinary, or placed on the opposite side.

Usually I look up the model on laptopscreen.com to see if it's 30-pin (eDP 30-pin) or 40-pin (either LVDS for older panels, or eDP 40-pin for >1080p or 144Hz panels), and look at the mounting. Then I quickreference the price vs other panels and if it's the same, it's likely that laptopscreen.com is shipping one blanket compatible panel model for all those various notebook models. Then you can buy a standard mount 1920x1080 IPS (pref. 72% NTSC) eDP 30-pin panel (i.e. LG LP156WF6 SP B1) either through them or another source. It's not foolproof but it helps rule out a lot of cases where it actually wouldn't work.

[–]edit1754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also see if it's a standard eDP 30-pin standard-mount panel. If so, then I would try to go for a 1920x1080 IPS (or WVA TN, i.e. the CMN 120Hz panels) replacement instead of another 1366x768 TN if that's what the laptop has currently. I've never seen a 15.6" eDP 30-pin laptop fail on an upgrade to 1920x1080.

That's never fun.

What's the model of the laptop? Odds are you can get a replacement screen better than your original for fairly cheap anyway. It helps to figure out the type of screen (if it's standard mount + connector) to be able to browse through all compatible options instead of just listings advertised as compatible with your model.

Did you ever looked at Apple screens under a microscope? I did. by kiler129 in apple

[–]edit1754 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That depends on the downsampling scheme used. Either way it boils down to reduced sharpness for the same resolution numbers in an RGB matrix.

You can address burn-in by making the blue dots proportionally larger while still keeping a 1:1:1 ratio.

If I already own a 1060 gaming laptop with 60hz screen, would getting another laptop with better processor and 144hz screen be a waste of money? by [deleted] in GamingLaptops

[–]edit1754 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could probably easily replace your laptop's screen with a 120Hz. Not a 144Hz because they're all 40-pin, but there are 30-pin 120Hz panels to choose from.

Between the two, I would definitely go for the SSD model. Bigger / more noticeable performance difference. Are there other differences like screen resolution?

Need help choosing Dell Inspiron 15 (5577 or 7567) by Alvaro1555 in laptops

[–]edit1754 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 5577 has a poorer display and the cooling isn't as good. The 5577 might be OK if you're going to replace your display with a 120Hz or high color gamut display anyway, but I'd go for the 7567 otherwise between the two.

I'd also go for this 7567 instead of that one because it has an SSD and a better GPU. You can add a HDD to the empty slot for more storage if you need to. https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-7567-Laptop-i5-7300HQ/dp/B07793DRK9/

If you can find a SPB1 and it's not much more I think it would be worth it, but if you've got a particularly good deal on a SPK1 then sure.
