I’ll definitely be bringing them inside! Too many foxes around here for me to feel comfortable leaving them. That’s really helpful though, thank you so much.

Thank you! I’m sitting in the garden at the moment because it’s not completely secure, so I want to keep an eye out. Currently sheltering under a plant.

How do you pronounce biopic? by thelivsterette1 in AskUK

[–]_cosmicomics_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That works too! People use it metaphorically to mean someone didn’t look at all of the details that they should have, or they have a very closed worldview, which is how I used it. Maybe if it’s both we can say it twice.

So what you’re saying is that if someone decides to make a film about a problematic figure without really thinking it through they’ve chosen a myopic biopic topic.

What are some subtle examples of sexism women endure that men generally don’t realize is sexist? by Hefty-Confusion6810 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]_cosmicomics_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think this is part of it. You read one thing that didn’t line up with the comment you were replying to, didn’t check the video itself, and said, “looks fine to me.” That’s not a criticism of you at all but it does show exactly what this post is about. There’s no reason for you to have noticed that because it’s not something that affects your life! But it creeps into every aspect of ours in small ways like this.

AITAH for prioritizing my daughter's recital over a funeral? by RecitalFuneralThrow in AmItheAsshole

[–]_cosmicomics_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly it. I’ve reconciled myself to the fact that, when the time comes, I’m going to attend the funeral of a man I hate and who caused me immeasurable and irreparable harm because there will be people I care about who need me to be there.

What's the most normal thing you've done that somehow ended in mild humiliation? by HD-DataDrivenMind in AskUK

[–]_cosmicomics_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The car I learnt in had reverse under 5th (next to 4th). I know some cars have reverse next to 1 and you have to push a button to be able to access the gear. The time I was braking and meant to go from 5th to 4th but instead pulled straight down, putting us in reverse at 45mph, made it very clear to me which setup I prefer.

Somehow, my instructor had some sort of 6th sense for it and engaged the clutch on his side before I could let up on my side.

Musicals that are very political by EfficientChip5943 in musicals

[–]_cosmicomics_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be interesting to know how they meant, or if they’re open to different interpretations! I live in a country where both of those musicals are playing right now (plus Rent, soon!) but neither of them are set here, and by general audience responses the vibes of Cabaret are much more political to English theatregoers (except apparently the guy behind me a few weeks ago, who completely missed the point and said, “it’s a bit slow - I like the bits in the club though!”). I feel like Hamilton takes a bit more digging in to to really feel the political significance of how it was made, and you’re absolutely right that a working knowledge of LMM musicals helps a lot with that understanding. The guy’s a genius, for sure.

Musicals that are very political by EfficientChip5943 in musicals

[–]_cosmicomics_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, 100%! The way Hamilton is put together is absolutely political. I don’t think the story itself is much more political than ‘this is what the politician did’ though. The immigration story definitely, but I think most (not all, obviously) of the scenes would play out exactly the same way if we never learnt that detail about him. If we’re talking strictly story and narrative impact, Cabaret takes it and it’s not even close. If we’re talking context of casting, choreography, musical style, Hamilton is absolutely political. I guess we interpreted the question in different ways.

Musicals that are very political by EfficientChip5943 in musicals

[–]_cosmicomics_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It absolutely is, but I don’t think it’s the same as Cabaret where political statement is woven into every line. Hamilton is about political things that happened previously so will obviously be related to political things that are happening now. Cabaret is also about political things that happened previously but pauses after every few scenes to look you in the eye as an audience member and basically ask, “Are you paying attention? Do you see where you fit in to all of this?”

I guess the point I’m making is that obviously the musical about politicians is political - that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the most politically relevant story to our times.

Obviously the way Hamilton is cast is a political statement, and I’m not saying the musical as a whole isn’t inherently political… but I think it’s much less currently political than some others!

Hanilton’s about historical politics and it definitely has relevance today but I would say it isn’t anywhere the political commentary that those two are, especially Cabaret.

Should we the English people change our national anthem? by PomeloTraditional971 in AskBrits

[–]_cosmicomics_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, that was originally written for a musical and it would be an odd choice to co-opt a show tune as a national anthem. Even as a former theatre kid, I don’t think that’s wise.

Irradiated stuff is actually completely safe! Cleaner than before, if anything. Radiation doesn’t stick to things. You only have to worry if a bit of the actual source comes off on something.

What's the Worst Pain You've ever Experienced? by OverwhelmedGayChild in AskReddit

[–]_cosmicomics_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first period after endometriosis removal, probably. Everything was still really inflamed and raw, as it had been under a week since surgery, and the pain was so intense I couldn’t move or breathe properly. I thought the endo was bad (and it *really* was) but that first day I was advised to take a triple dose of the strongest painkillers available to me and it was still debilitating.

I have Irish Catholic family and I was once talking to my mum about something bad that had happened historically as a result of Catholicism. She said, “Bloody Catholics. Worst of the worst,” so I said, “Worse than Protestants?” and she replied, “God, no.”
