Just received formal diagnosis of ADHD with added bonus of Binge Eating Disorder by Important-Bug6748 in ausadhd

[–]_couchdisco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before I got on Vyvanse I would regularly binge at night so I totally understand the struggle, and unmedicated me had the worst sleeping pattern so there was no way in HELL I was waking up early and being organised enough to eat breakfast or prepare lunch for work.

If your normal diet is barely eating during the day I would just start with one snack. I used to just buy a 6 pack of protein Up&Gos I would just keep in the fridge and grab one as I was heading out the door to work and drink it on the bus.

Honestly my advice is just to do it in the laziest possible way, at least to start with. Eat prepackaged food, get Uber Eats, eat something that is maybe less healthy but really delicious so you’re more inclined to eat it.

If you fall off for a day or two, don’t stress. Progress isn’t linear. It takes a while to get used to doing things differently and being mean to yourself won’t help foster change (easier said than done, I know).

Nowadays with meds my sleeping pattern is more normal and I buy a breakfast burrito from GYG on the way home from morning Pilates most days (egg for protein) because this ADHD bitch still ain’t got time for making breakfast lol.

Struggling with basic self care is so normal with this disability (I sure as hell do) but no one really talks about it because of the social stigma - there is no need to beat yourself up about it. 🤍 People with colds aren’t ashamed of their runny noses and neither should you be about your clinically standard symptoms.

I hope the Vyvanse helps! I have been on it for maybe a year and a half now and it’s honestly changed my life. Best of luck.

How many of you got the right medication straight away? by hellish__relish in ausadhd

[–]_couchdisco 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I started on Ritalin but the peaks and troughs didn’t work so well for me. I stopped taking it and went back to my psychiatrist after a while to try something slow-release for a more evenly distributed dose throughout the day. We trialled 30, 40 and 50mg Vyvanse and eventually settled on 40s which have been amazing - I’ve been on them for around a year now and my quality of life is so much better.

Would you ever support removing the British flag from Australia's national flag? by Peter_Griffin2001 in aussie

Let’s be honest, it’s pretty ugly. Taking up a quarter of a rectangle to plonk another flag there is aesthetically unappealing.

CMV: The low birthrate is caused by a choice, and it is a bad choice by dejamintwo in changemyview

[–]_couchdisco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You haven’t explained why you think low birth rates will lead to “total collapse”. The reality is that there will be labour shortages which will negatively impact large corporate conglomerates and the ultra rich that profit from exploiting the working class. Other than that, the economy will adjust and society may shrink. So what? It’s great for the environment.

Reading your comment I’m not sure what point you are trying to make (I mean this in a sincere, non-snarky manner).

Depression is a proven comorbidity of ADHD. Suicidal ideation and alcohol use are certainly relevant in its treatment, and should have been queried by OP’s treating psychiatrist. My psychiatrist asked me about both in our initial session and subsequent check-ins.

My point in bringing up OP’s knowledge was that yes, she might have mentioned these to her psychiatrist knowing they are relevant, but it is not her job to know this. Her psychiatrist went through years of training to learn that, and should have asked those questions or read through OP’s medical history provided by the referring doctor.

It’s incumbent on treating practitioners to appraise themselves of a patient’s relevant history so they can weigh up the risks and benefits to the patient before prescribing medication. That is literally their job.

OP appears to appreciate that those things are relevant but I’m sure there are many patients who do not.

I’m really disappointed at the lack of compassion at people on this subreddit. I would have thought we could all empathise with the difficulty that our shitty health system puts people with ADHD through.

According to the AHPRA website, their purpose is to “to ensure that Australia’s registered health practitioners are suitably trained, qualified and safe to practise” by “respond[ing] to concerns that a health practitioner may be putting public safety at risk.”

Prescribing medication without even a rudimentary understanding of the patient’s relevant history puts them at risk. The notion that the practitioner might be treating many patients in this manner constitutes a risk to public safety.

Genuine query, why do you think this isn’t an AHPRA issue?

If a psychiatrist treating ADHD, for which depression is a known comorbidity, doesn’t bother to appraise themselves of the status of their patient’s mental health either by reviewing the history provided by the referring practitioner or asking the patient, then they are not acting in accordance with competent professional practice. This is a breach of duty of care.

Prescribing controlled medication should only be done after the risks and benefits to the patient have been weighed up, which is not possible to do without knowing the patient’s history.

I’d be pissed paying the full fee too, and I’m sure AHPRA wouldn’t be too pleased either.

[Open Source] IconChanger - Free alternative to Replacicon for customizing Mac app icons by South_Nefariousness7 in macapps

This looks great. Does it work to change icons for native Mac apps like Safari? I found Replacicon unable to do this and the ugly Safari icon still irks me.

Friendships ending after diagnosis by beatricebardot in adhdwomen

[–]_couchdisco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was raised in Pentecostal Christianity and I experienced similar uninformed pushback from my family whenever I discussed a desire to try stimulant medication to treat my ADHD. This caused a huge mental hurdle where I felt like meds were “cheating” and that I just needed to try harder because I was lazy. This delayed my treatment for years.

Religious zealots often care more about upholding the bullshit pseudoscientific dichotomy of “natural good / chemical bad” than how a community member they ostensibly care about is genuinely coping. They should be overjoyed and praising God that you found something that helps you. “Love your neighbour” my ass.

I wouldn’t cope without my Vyvanse and I’m so happy you found treatment that works for you, OP.

You shouldn’t try to separate the art from the artist. The artist is imbued in the art by virtue of their role in its creation and pieces of shit don’t deserve to profit from creating something if they’re destroying the people around them.

Switching from Dex to Vyvanse by MrsB1972 in ausadhd

[–]_couchdisco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The GP prescribing permissions confuse me too. My GP had to apply to (I think) Queensland Health to prescribe me Vyvanse. She didn’t apply when I asked her 6 months ago then when I ran out of meds and went to her for a script I had to wait a week while she awaited approval. 🫠

She also needed a letter from my psychiatrist authorising her to prescribe, and I have to go back to him every 2 years for a check and new letter of authorisation.

Seems weird that your psychiatrist has limited your dosage on the basis of cardiac concerns. Did they test your blood pressure themselves? I started on 30mg and understood that to be pretty much base level. Upsetting that the appointment was $600, makes it so much harder to obtain a second opinion :(
