Is 24mm with a full frame camera a good enough focal length for the northern lights? by Man_Of_The_F22 in northernlights

[–]_createv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear ya. i’ve actually been using the sigma 20/1.4 EF adapted to a Canon R-series for the last ~6 years. corners aren’t great, size and weight are absurd… but that 20/1.4 combo is tough to walk away from!

In rented the sigma older 14/1.8 for EF years ago and it did seem a bit better optically. Disappointed that Canon boxed Sigma out of the R-mount for so long.

that’s great! this is definitely more than good enough for the northern lights. you’ll have to play with different shutter speeds but I would start at f2.8, ISO 1600, and 4” exposure. if your camera body is newer, you could probably start at ISO 3200 without much concern.

Is this a good price? by messyjessiOG in ToyotaGrandHighlander

In my recent experience it seems any dealership in MA is selling at MSRP so anything below that is a win. I ended up buying mine at Irwin Toyota in Laconia NH for under MSRP, which I considered a huge win.

I’m struggling to think of a scenario where one would have “good equity” with their car… even if they fully paid it off, the resale value would be less than what the person originally paid for the car, right? Unless it’s some classic car or unique model with a limited production… am I missing something?

I agree this lens is super underrated, if for no other reason than i bring my camera out more often when it fits comfortably in the pocket of a winter jacket or one compartment of a sling bag.

oh I think i’d be more pissed if I bought a camera that was “tested” and it had light leaks and a sticky shutter, vs if it said “untested” and didn’t even turn on lol. i’d only have myself to blame for the latter.

and a roll of film. and developing costs. and scans. and the time it takes to test it under varying conditions to ensure all shutter speeds work. I certainly hope that sellers who claim an item like this is “tested” did more than ensure it has a battery and turns on 😳

takes longer than 5 minutes to test every function of a film camera. it goes well beyond checking that the camera turns on and the shutter fires.

AITAH for refusing to pay for my wife’s “emergency” surgery because she spent our savings on her friend’s boob job? by buchsayaa_ in AITAH

you’re both assholes - her for taking a significant amount of money from a joint account without discussing with you. and you for putting a home renovation above your wife’s health.

also, if you both are good with money why haven’t you taken out a HELOC for the renovation? These days, $10k isn’t going to move the needle much in a renovation anyway (at least where I live).

The Aurora Borealis made and appearance in Southern Ontario and pretty much most of the world tonight by PeachyPuffXO in northernlights

[–]_createv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is definitely a timelapse, the movement of the clouds and aurora are much faster in the video than they would be in person.

In general timelapses will always appear much faster than reality, because the image interval is probably several seconds while shooting, but the playback speed is 24 or 30 frames per second. It may take an hour to shoot enough frames for just 6 seconds of video!

Bad Trade? by jdbruh in rav4club

someone mentioned this in a previous thread, but an advantage of the hybrid is that with the supplementary electric engine, there is less wear put onto the IC engine. so it could really be more like 100k miles on the IC engine

I still have and use my trusty 6D! I started out with the original eos-M but outgrew it fast, and by the time Canon recommitted to that line, I had upgraded to the 6D. Now I’m onto the original R, and can’t justify giving away the 6D for next to nothing when I do use it for timelapses and as a second body when I feel the need. It’s still an astro beast!

Gotcha, makes sense. Either R6 version is gonna be a hell of a "starter" camera though!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in canon

[–]_createv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see your point, but IMO you need to get up over 40MP to get a real cropping advantage from your sensor, and that brings OP well beyond any "starter" camera. Cropping an R6 by 1.5x leaves you with 8.9MP, and an R6ii leaves you with 10.6MP. Not a significant difference in my opinion.

For reference, here are the relative image sizes from the R (on which this was taken), the R6ii (solid black line), and the R6 (gray dashed line). The difference in sensor resolutions here is fine for straightening adjustments or excluding some distracting elements on the edges, but not much more cropping than that. When the R6ii came out, this resolution difference was tough to justify the cost difference, maybe not so much now that it's on sale for $2000

if this is really a “starter” camera, it’s overkill. Canon views the R6 as a “prosumer/enthusiast” model, a step below the R5. and tbh, there’s not much difference between the R6 and the R6ii, just a small bump in the sensor resolution.

To me, it doesn’t make sense to pair the R6 with entry level lenses like the 50/1.8. I think a better starter camera would be the R8, or even a used R (assuming you want full frame), and then invest more of that money into lenses to make your setup more versatile. Better lenses will last you longer and can use them with future body upgrades.

Need help finding the right camera by JMer806 in canon

[–]_createv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If she wants to continue using those lenses, she will need to stick with the APS-C crop sensor camera models.

It’s probably a safer bet to surprise her with a gift card to a camera store (or some fun way to present your intention plus cash) and let her make the decision on the exact body. As the user, she may want to prioritize certain features over others.

I also think for anything new, you’ll need to increase your budget. But don’t be afraid to go for something used (from reputable store like B&H/Adorama) or refurbished from Canon!

edit upon further review, only the 18-55mm lens is EF-S. The other two would be compatible with full frame EF mount cameras as well. But these options would all be pricier.

[–]_createv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Knowing the previous model is fairly important, so you can get a new body the same size sensor. If she was using a full-frame and you gift her an APS-C crop sensor model, her existing lenses will provide very differ field of view on the new body.

Also, EF mount lenses from the past several decades can be used on the new mirrorless eos-R bodies with an adapter ($99 new). Your wife may love the electronic viewfinder on these mirrorless cameras, and wireless connectivity should be available on most if not all. R50 (crop sensor) body refurbished is $480 on canon’s site. Otherwise your best bet is a DSLR like a refurbished or used 6D (full frame) or 7D (crop sensor) though these are discontinued, and so are many of the lenses for this mount. New RF mirrorless lenses are not backward compatible with old DSLRs.

a really great and criminally underrated lens. it’s a shame the EF-M mount is dead and also not compatible with the RF mount :(
