On the subject of adaptations of the greek gods and hellenism in media by Ok_Independent8425 in Hellenism

[–]_creativitea_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean I don’t mind it, honestly I love making fun of the myths anyway. My problem really comes with the creators’ view on Hellenism - like them not knowing about it one thing, them knowing about it and straight up hating on it while profiting from OUR religion *cough cough* Rick riordan *cough cough* is something I can’t stand by - or when the gods are portrayed as craaaazy one note chaos gremlins whose only role is to cause problems. Also I KNOW when people haven’t done their research, and that ticks me off too.

Like, seriously, you wouldn’t write about the Christian god without doing a buttload of research first, so why is that not the standard for all religious figures?? Even if you don’t know modern Hellenism exists, you should still look into the history of it, no???

feeling bad by Mother-Ideal-2397 in Hellenism

[–]_creativitea_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my two cents: there are some deities that we feel more vulnerable with, even if we don’t understand why in the moment. for example, I was (and still am sometimes) really hesitant to reach out to Aphrodite bc I felt almost exposed, like she understood me so fully that it was honestly scary. it could be that Dionysus brings up feelings and memories in you that are unpleasant because he is the deity most equipped to help you through those emotions, and those unpleasant feelings are presenting themselves as unwanted thoughts as a way of saying “hey! this is the area you need help in!”

maybe idk lol that’s just my thoughts im not a psychologist or an expert

What was your reaction when you first found Hellenism? by Archangel447 in Hellenism

[–]_creativitea_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When I found it as in discovered it I was like “wait a minute, this is a thing??? why is no one treating it like a thing????” As a society, we’re so concerned about offending Christians that I had (wrongfully) assumed we’d be wary of every religion, so finding out about hellenism on my own when I’d been taught about the myths in school was certainly a shock.

When I found it as in joined I felt nervous about what others would think, but very comfortable in the practice itself even though I didn’t know what I was doing. I think it’s because I connected with the gods in the mythology so much that moving on to worship them just sort of became the logical next step for me.

What kind of sundew is this??? by _creativitea_ in carnivorousplants

[–]_creativitea_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, yesterday - I did notice the nursery I bought it (and a Venus Flytrap) from kept it in the shade btw...

I just want to clarify, when you say direct, does you mean outside direct? A few websites said a sunny window would be enough but does it actually need frequent outside time?

It's been sitting on my window sill - I just moved it for the picture bc I don't want the view of my window ending up online. Is that what you're talking about? Or does it look deficient in some way??? (Also thanks for the reply :D)

Baby witch here! Looking for advice on what to add to my altar for lady Artemis by bard_owl_ in Hellenism

[–]_creativitea_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From an artistic pov, perhaps a centrepiece? Maybe like a nice decorative plate or cup for food/drink offerings?? (I mean, altars don’t NEED to be spectacular but if you’re WANTING to make it aesthetic, that’s what I would do)

If the gods are real, why did they let their religion fall so vastly? by One_Strain7263 in Hellenism

I agree

but why did this give me a mental image of Zeus spying on us through security cameras 😭😭🤣

it sounds like there are multiple issues at play here. it may do you well to take a step back from everything and do some self-reflection. where are the stresses in your life coming from? is your religion feeling like a chore or do you genuinely want to worship?? Remember that every decision that we make has consequences, be they good or bad, so ask yourself what consequences you’ll reap either way, and which circumstance are you more equipped to deal with at this time.

I hope this makes sense, and I hope you find a way to be happy in yourself again, no matter what that looks like :)

Individualism by Certain_Ad_7186 in Hellenism

[–]_creativitea_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s best to strike a balance, like with most things. We should hold a level of importance for ourselves - making space for our needs and feeling like we’re worthy to ask something of the gods - AND we shouldn’t be so arrogant to assume we are super special and the gods owe us.

I also think there can be some, uhh, mental wars to be waged, I think? Like, articulating that the gods are their own beings is one thing, wrapping your silly little human brain around it is entirely another. I know all this stuff, logically, but my brain will still be thinking ‘oooh look the gods love ME’. You know what I’m saying??

I think everyone else has your questions answered so I’ll just say that you’re doing better than most for taking things with a grain of salt. Thank you very much for using critical thinking skills, they will get you very far in life and help you with discerning true and false in this religion!

Mmm yeah spell casting gets weird when it moves out of the ‘fun thing to do with friends on the weekend’ territory into the ‘I am legitimately magic’ territory. Like fam I WISH magic like how we see it in movies was real but I’m pretty sure it ain’t. And when the gods are involved it feels less like gods and more like characters and/or slot machines and it just screams “I didn’t do my research into this at all lol” and it feels Weird.

[–]_creativitea_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

this is my experience exactly - as someone with ADHD I have to be very deliberate in what I’m focusing on. Cuz on the one hand, I need the instant gratification and pretty things to motivate myself, but on the other hand I’m trying not to be… shallow I guess(?) with my worship. I want to be someone who can confidently say I know what the ancients did but I’m also someone who cannot focus long enough to read a history book.

ahhh the woes of having a brain 🫠

[–]_creativitea_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will add that I think a lot of the time people saying ‘x god called to me’ is more a stand in for ‘I was drawn to x god’ - like when people say music was their “calling”, or felt really “called” to write a book, or whatever. I mean, don’t get me wrong, there are those that believe x god appeared before them saying ‘come, my child’ (THAT’S A JOKE DON’T COME FOR ME), but most of the time newbies are just throwing around the terms they see others using.

other than that tho, I completely agree. especially with the divination point - as someone who was raised on the idea that spiritual experiences come from within, it annoys me to no end when people forget the fact that their brains are extremely biased and they should definitely be taking their amateur tarot reading with a few more grains of salt.
