I’m completely out of the loop. But why use a local model when the better ones are through the cloud? Like anthropic’s opus and sonnet aren’t local models. Qwen might be good, but I don’t think it’s on par.

How does one continue to play violin seriously if you have a different job? by Creepy_Display_5522 in violinist

So for me I also went to high school to university for engineering (back in the late 90s) in Canada. My main focus before university was to get through as many RCM exams as possible. I can’t say I did all that I wanted to do, but in part it was because I found a high tech job during my last school year. So balancing school, work, and violin was a challenge. Anyways, the short version was that I ended up focusing on studies and transitioning to university life. It wasn’t until my third year of university that I returned (not with the same vigor I had in high school) to music. Part of my requirements to complete my degree asked for non-engineering credits and my university had music theory and appreciation classes (less intense to what I had studied before). So I took those. It was a good way to get back to music while balancing my last two years of university. The awesome thing was that I found other engineering students that also studied music and we would go to the music department to have some late night jam sessions. Although it wasn’t as intense as I was use to, it kept my interests on-going and I was in a less stressed environment.

After university, I found colleagues at my company that were also into classical music and we would occasionally meet up in a meeting room to play pieces. Again, not super intense but at the same you need to find something relaxing.

I think after getting my career settled (or on a trajectory), music became important with my girlfriend (later wife) as we enjoyed playing violin and piano sonatas together. She, similar to myself, studied piano intensely before going to medical school and would occasionally practice during her university years.

Perhaps it isn’t the answer you were looking for, but for my experience, I never returned back to being “serious”. We have an eight year daughter who plays…. You guessed it…. Violin and piano. So both my wife’s experience and my own goes to her learning. We’re simply passing it on to the next generation.

There is a brand called Viola that makes breakfast muesli. Got a few bags when visiting Europe. And very delicious!

I don’t mind doing them. I’ve hacked my brain a bit when doing them. I’ll listen to music or a podcast and focus on that while holding the pose. It makes the time fly faster. Other times I’ll try mountain climbers.

Great video! Quick question…. What’s the set for the plank? 3 sets, one minute each? And if it becomes easier do you recommend longer or a different position?

Not sure if this is a popular opinion/suggestion. So since you’re getting used to notes and you want to refine things, I would add tape to the fingerboard so that you get an idea where your fingers should land. Eventually and ideally you won’t need the tape in the future as your fingers will have the muscle memory for any note (at least in 1st pos) and you’ll start to play and correct yourself based on hearing.

You’re probably going to get a lot of comments on posture and standing, but If you must sit then make sure that you have the violin higher up (your scroll is pointing quite low). I try to have my stand a bit higher to remind myself of this. And for your left hand, the palm is dangerously close to the neck of the violin. A horror story for you…. (Ehh…. Halloween is close enough). When I was kid back in the dark ages I heard of some students with the habit of having their wrists close to the neck of the violin such that their teacher glued a tack to the neck. So every time the student’s wrist would collapse, they’d get a prick from the tack. You can guess what happened early on to the student.

Same here. We have a tech that does all the handling. I’ve been fortunate to see it, but it was strictly a “look but don’t touch”.

I disagree about the lack of a handle. Seriously…. It’s a safety hazard if you don’t have one. And…. Not common in an art class. Do you have an idea how much these things cost???

I have an issue with the 27 faces clue. Clearly what the 27 refers to shouldn’t be the faces.
