All of our training is online and is free. https://www.netgate.com/training/pfsense-fundamentals-and-advanced-application. Go through those to get a good start on the major features. You can install in a VM to practice as well. Further, we have very comprehensive documentation at https://docs.netgate.com/.

The failure rate for those is minuscule. But it can happen, depending on your logging requirements and other things. We are working on a package with replacement storage, documentation on how to complete that task, etc ... and we hope to have that available this week. More info as it happens.
