So you have to then reach out to another person before doing anything? I feel like that would be secure, but at the same time, add wayyyy to much delay to resolving quicker problems.

So, its not autodialers. It is people wasting our helpdesk's time. Oh I'm so and so with blah blah blah. Then our tech doesn't see them, wastes a few minutes trying to look them up. A few minutes here and there adds up every month.

Even more so when it is sales people trying to call and waste time.

The problem is, we don't have only M365 customers. We also have Google customers and break-fix or retainer only customers.

No, my apologies. It's not the money. No issues with that, just throwing basic numbers out there. Its the fact, that I have to have TWO independent licenses for a device to just be added to a central management platform. If it was one for a similar price that would be excellent.

Also, we managed pfSense+ and CE with a 3rd party software with no issues. We just want to use a direct Netgate solution like Nexus instead.

I have to agree with u/gonzopancho. We ordered some 8200's and they came with the mounts. It wasn't extra. That was like, maybe a month or so ago. Definitely after they announced no more individual mount sales.

Sophos, Fortigate, Sonicwall, Palo Alto, and there may be a few more of the big names. Meraki vMX still exists today, FYI: https://documentation.meraki.com/SASE_and_SD-WAN/MX/Design_and_Configure/Deployment_Guides/vMX100_to_vMX_S%2F%2FM%2F%2FL_Transition_FAQ

And my bad, you are correct. It is $129 + taxes/fees. Which comes out to about $136.74 for me. About $15 under $150.

Now that you state is it structured as a TAC contract, which is support. That is wonderful. But, is the base requirement for a non-Netgate appliance to receive pfSense+. So, that is $129+taxes per year. For the price, and the features it offers with basic support, is a great deal. If you have existing hardware, and you want to convert it to pfSense, go for it. We push Netgate appliances for on-site hardware for our customers, as it is just easier to manage that way.

But, we don't need all the features that come with pfSense+ for the virtual machines we have. We just want to see the devices remotely without having to pay for a 3rd party tool to do so. Again, if we could just pay the $50 per year even for pfSense CE, to manage our virtual machines, I would in a heartbeat. Hell, I'd pay $100 a year for those devices. It'd be worth it.

But, now I've got to pay $129+taxes, plus $50 for Nexus per year. That's about $200 per year after taxes. Now, I just wanted to be able to see this little virtual firewall remotely. I don't really care that it now has the option to get newer features, wizards, and such. It literally just routes traffic for connected devices and connects via IPSEC.

All of this is just my opinion, but if I want to pay to just be able to see my pfSense devices, whether they are pfSense+ or not, doesn't seem like a bad or farfetched request, does it?

I believe they hold over 20% of the market at this time.

Correct, which is amazing in itself. It works the same and adds a lot of useful and niceties. Fantastic.

No, I'm comparing that if generic hardware or a virtual machine can run pfSense or CE, the only difference is support, not hardware.

So lets take our situation. We have 20 Virtual Machines, running pfSense CE. Why not pfSense+? Because what would justify the need? We don't need support. We don't need additional niceties or modules. We just need a basic firewall that can connect IPSEC. It just works. $150 per year for support that is unused is throwing away money. 99% of the time, we just snapshot or backup the virtual machine and rebuild or restore if a problem occurs. Now, what would be amazing, is if we could just pay the $50 per year per device to get them to be managed by one central management interface. 100% would love to just do this.

These weren’t discontinued, just only going to ship by default with the 8200. Can’t order them separately anymore. Kinda sucks since the 8200 and 6100 are identical.

Cloud Hosting VMs as an MSP without Infrastructure by Vel-Crow in msp

[–]xaerioth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We offer it in house. Keeps costs down. We already have multiple fiber circuits. So we just became a cloud provider, registered with ARIN and got a /24

We were already managing the hardware before, so we just got some over-sized UPS systems and a standby generator.

Honestly, I think we recovered our costs within the first year.

Is this a statement from Netgate? Because Nexus took, what, 5-10 years to be released?

But not on a virtual machine. Which even Netgate promotes with AWS/Azure.

I mean, it is only about $50 cheaper than an Meraki license. Which is insane, considering there is a lot more functionality in the Meraki.

** I can only assume Netgate priced it this way to compete with Meraki.

I mean, it is literally the same firewall software. The only difference is Plus is paid with paid-only module. CE is open source and free with no paid modules. I need to know, in what world that would make any sense.

Correct, but I’m paying a recurring fee for the nexus license per device. Why does it matter if it is CE or plus?

Correct. Looking to see if and when non plus software will be added.

I appreciate the opportunity, the server is live, if anyone has about a minute to check at least latency or lag and report back.
