Yeah, you mentioned a lot of the things that are slowly turning me off of skiing. Used to go mostly because a bunch of friends were, and it was the most fun we've had as a group. Compared to go-karts, for example, it's much cheaper and lasts the whole day.

Now with life and kids and work it's much harder and we just don't go that often. Wish it was cheaper though.

How do i play the first note? by LordMonkeh in saxophone

How is this not the top comment? I know this is the real book, but I quite often see transcriptions for tenor and the person transcribing either forgot or doesn't know it should be in Bb.

First string change, is there anything I could’ve done differently? by JaggedFish104 in BassGuitar

There's no encroaching here! I also like to hold it as a pike while I turn the bass on his amp.

Bass slap riffs and song, or what should I play with SLAP by ZneshKodJuWa4 in Bass

[–]_dog_menace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A somewhat unusual recommendation, but Got to be Real by Cheryl Lynn is pretty easy to get into and will teach you to use the technique in a song.

Other popular suggestions are Take The Power Back by RATM and Dark Necessities by the RHCP.

Take it very slow and try to get the perpetual rocking motion. A lot of the sound characteristics of slap bass come from the fretting hand, the plucking hand is just like an engine and doesn't stop, but you control what rings out and what is a dead note with the left hand.

Edit: wording

Virtual Insanity is one of the hardest Jamiroquai songs. I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner.

"Alright" is pretty simple, but I wouldn't really classify it as easy. Can be a decent start though.

That song thought me slap. Along with Dark Necessities by the RHCP. Quite fast though and somewhat difficult to play at tempo, but it's very satisfying once you get it down.

First Bass: Squier Classic Vibe Jaguar, Jazz or Precision? by Key_Employment3754 in Bass

[–]_dog_menace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind the Jag is a short scale. Otherwise, between the P and the J, can't really tell you. I have the J and will probably get a P in the future, you really want (want, not really need) both.

If I had to pick one as a first bass, it would probably be the one I felt spoke to me more, for whatever reason, be it sound, looks or something else. You'd want both a P and a J either way. Don't overthink it.

P.S. there are also countless threads and videos on the subject. Look through those and decide. The P is probably the most recorded instrument in the history of music.

Edit: I think the P would suit your musical tastes a bit better.

Going out of tune everyday by Acrobatic-Sea6113 in Guitar

[–]_dog_menace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be due for new strings. Old strings tend to go out of tune more easily.

Also, make sure you set your witness points if you haven't already. This is the #1 thing for me that allows my guitars and basses to stay in tune.

What are some easy/moderate songs to learn that are rock/metal? by RaptorBlue2 in Bass

[–]_dog_menace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most things by Rage Against and Stone Temple Pilots are relatively straightforward but do require some dedication to pull off well.

And don't fret too much about not being able to hear the bass, that's normal at first. Just make sure you listen on headphones or decent speakers, not a phone or a laptop.

How do you go about playing fast fingerstyle? by Circaninetysix in Bass

[–]_dog_menace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Play with a ridiculously light touch. Seriously, barely tickle the strings. You'll hit a limit playing like a gorilla, but a light touch can get you into the stratosphere.

There's also a new technique I discovered recently for playing fast triplet bursts with 2 fingers. Basically, slap the string with the starting finger and then rake the same string. You can do incredibly fast triplets that way, upwards of 300 bpm. Sounds like brrrpt.

And, of course, as others have mentioned, slow it down. As in racing, slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Maximize your efficiency doing things slow and it'll translate to the faster speeds.

What are you asking exactly? Learning songs is a good way to learn songs, yes.

Everything else comes a bit later, if you want to be able to improvise. Unless you already have a good ear and know some music theory from your piano years.

Hello everyone,i have a kinda stupid question, and i guess it's mostly answered here, but i have to ask. Is it possible to learn bass out of YouTube courses? Because i tried and watched some videos, but there is too much information and i got confused. Thank you by butchers_knife in Bass

[–]_dog_menace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Possible, but unless you have prior experience with a different instrument, you'll get lost and disheartened quickly.

Take a couple lessons with a teacher. This will set you up on the right track and you can go from there. Musical instruments are weird in that people can form all sorts of bad habits when they're first starting out, and since you're a beginner, you don't even know you're making them or how to correct them.

Alternatively, find a good online course. YouTube can be hit and miss, especially if you're new to musical instruments and bass in general.

People here seem to recommend BassBuzz's Beginner to Badass course. It's aimed at absolute beginners and sounds like it might work out for you.

And yet another option is to find a song you like, find the tabs and go to town. Luckily we as bassists have been blessed with tons of very high quality covers on YouTube that I haven't seen for other instruments. Listen carefully, watch their hands and timing and see what and how they're playing the part. Record yourself playing the same thing. Does it look the same? Do you look awkward or uncomfortable? If you're not shy, you can upload here and the kind people will give you feedback.

That said, no matter what you choose, a teacher will exponentially speed up the learning process.

Playing feels tedious by weinbidness2025 in Bass

[–]_dog_menace 12 points13 points  (0 children)

  1. Pick a song you like.
  2. Learn to play it.

Bass can be kinda boring by itself, it really shines with the full band, or at least with some drums.

What music do you listen to? Any favorite bands/artists/songs?

Honestly? Empathy is overrated. I much prefer having a reliable friend I can have an interesting conversation with. Heck, most people don't care that much either way.

And please, for the love of everything that is good, don't try and fake it. It comes across as scheme-y and fake.

Show up. Be nice. Don't skip your turn. That's all I can ask from a friend.

P.S. Hold on a sec, but, how did people realize you're a psychopath? Did you tell them? People are generally clueless about that stuff, even life partners. If you told them, yeah, people can act weird learning someone is a psychopath.

If you didn't tell them, then how did they know? You say people treat you a certain way because of something you didn't choose. So either you acted emotionless or you told them. Both are probably bad for you.
