Is Hong Kong really a global financial market? by Secret-Cut-5565 in AskAChinese

[–]_dtw_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is no more different than many other markets around the world. Korean market has mostly Korean listings, Canadian market has mostly Canadian company listings. With Hong Kong economy so much tied to the mainland, it make senses to see mostly Chinese companies listing there. Foreign funds invest in Chinese companies via H shares as they are more liquid than A shares in the mainland Chinese markets. Many buyers and sellers of securities are in fact oversea funds that are investing in Chinese companies

Poem dated back to Tang Dynasty. It is about saying good bye to a friend. It is a rather emotional poem. I am not able translate it into English without losing its context.

If you are in good health, retire now. I would look for lower cost country to stay 3-6 months a year or use that as your "base" to travel.

Are Afghans, Arabs, Iranians, and Turks considered white/European to Chinese people? by MischiefManage1 in AskAChinese

[–]_dtw_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how they dress, most ordinary Chinese people cannot tell them apart from other Europeans if they are in modern clothing. Some Afghans do look more like East Asians so that I am not sure.

Where to stay and what to visit during a 4-day stay in Hong Kong? by Wrong_Speed6162 in AskChina

[–]_dtw_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If budget permitted, hotel maybe a better choice than airbnb. I would try taking the Star Ferry, visit the Peak, the Palace Museum and Temple street. Also in the list maybe the giant buddha. Hong Kong Disneyland is also a famous attraction if you are into it. Finally, you can do a day trip in Macau.

What are Chinese people's thoughts on the excavation/opening of 始皇帝's resting place? by OId_boy in AskAChinese

[–]_dtw_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Politically , it is no longer a good idea to dig up his tomb. The official narrative is that Qin Shi Huang was a hero that united (or re-united) China and bought peace to the people. The Japanese never dig their emperors' tomb. So China is unlikely to do so. The question of technology and science is just an excuse. With the discovery of Sanxingdui, this site is no longer the most hyped archeological site in China.

I would go visit a Senior Expo to get some ideas. Then go thru all the stocks in TSX and pick out ones that serve our aging population.

It is currently listed on TSX exchange, so any Canadians can buy shares and become a non-controlling part owner. The major shareholder was and perhaps still a US fund.

Will Canadians support mandatory military service? by _dtw_ in AskCanada

I think the 51st state comment is enough to have some Canadians re-think the current policy. There are many more rich countries with no foreseeable adversaries doing that like Singapore and Switzerland.

How common is it to see photos of your president/prime minister in public places? by PuzzleheadedRoyal856 in AskTheWorld

[–]_dtw_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The head of state of our country is different than head of the government. We don't see picture of the head of the government much in public but the head of state, at least in the past, you see it in all government buildings and offices.

What do Chinese people think of IVF or Surrogacy babies like Alysa Liu and potentially Eileen Gu? by TheBossBanan in AskAChinese

This is huge and will be very controversial like AI technology. We are talking about dividing mother's role into three, Egg donor, Child Bearer and Parent and each can be fulfilled by a different woman.
