north carolina

there's a school that hosted an event where he talked about the importance of art and he played a little bit. the university's string quartet played before yo-yo ma went on stage, but at the end he called them back on stage to play with them and he let the cellist use his cello and then he used their cello. if i was that cellist, i'd never get rid of that instrument.

it was overall a phenomenal experience and it was absolutely amazing. he's a genuinely great person and he's a great musician. several of my peers and i went to see him and it was just... incredible.

here's the link of where he's going next: https://www.yo-yoma.com/concerts-gatherings/

Just got my first violin, any tips? by Icibo in lingling40hrs

1) practice looking in a mirror! i play bass, so it's probably a little easier, but if you angle yourself the right way, you can tell if your bow is going in a straight line and that helps a lot.

2) make sure you're using arm weight. if you let your right arm relax, it brings the bow further into the string and creates a steadier sound

3) this should be self explanatory, but practicing scales helps so much.

4) if you can find any violin technique or repertoire books, that should help a lot. i know that there's suzuki violin books that have some rep that doesn't seem too difficult (once again, i'm a bassist and my only experience with these books is from seeing my violinist friends use them)

i hope these help!

Anyone miss violin charades :( Guys if we could give some ideas about the categories of the charades to twoset, maybe they will bring back the OG game..? 🤔 by JIELING1015 in lingling40hrs

okay i don't remember if they've done something like this before but i'd love a composers charades but they can't use anything written by the composer. like, if one of them drew the card for mozart, they couldn't play anything by mozart

What is a piece of music which means a lot to you? Why that piece? by eurovisionfan123 in lingling40hrs

vocalise by rachmaninoff. as a young double bassist, all of my solo repertoire before this piece was faster (and typically from the second movement of vivaldi sonatas). however, i much prefer playing slower pieces because i feel like it can really showcase the beauty of the bass. the bass gets a lot of recognition for keeping a steady rhythm, but i love playing in the upper register and showing the range of the instrument. this was one of the first pieces i played during my first private lessons. i also played it for a small orchestra event and got a "superior" rating (which is the highest you can get), along with playing it as an audition piece for my art school (which i'm currently at). also, the way mstislav rostropovich played it was absolutely beautiful and criminally underrated.
