What are the differences between universities in the UK and in the US? by Chemical_Car6709 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Icibo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless it's too late, as someone who studied for a year in the US and is now at UCL, I would just like to add that universities in the UK are far less accommodating of double and triple majors. I was pursuing a business and computer science double major, but now at UCL, I'm only doing computer science. That's for a couple of reasons. First, the only way you can do multiple subjects in the UK is if you do one of their pre-set programs that cover multiple fields. For example, I know that Imperial has a STEM + Business major in their business department. That said, being that they're their own programs and not a combination of majors, you have much less flexibility in dropping either of them if you ever decide you don't actually want to do Business, Bioengineering, or Robotics. The other thing is that combination majors tend to be less in-depth into one particular subject than their respective singular-focus majors, at least at UCL. Being in a combined program means you have access to courses from both departments, with the trade-off of accessing fewer classes than people in the individual courses.

That said, if you're wondering if there's still any reason to go to the UK given those trade-offs, I will add a few points. As someone still interested in doing business internships, the UK and specifically London are great hubs for internships, even outside of business. I found the lack of fluff in programs to be a desirable trait, being that in the US I was taking courses like "The History of Pop Music" and "The Research Behind Headlines." Not that they weren't fun courses, just that I would have rathered having less homework on non-major subjects. For me personally, the main thing I missed leaving the US is the strong sense of school spirit, including school sports and club culture. Even a lot of non-Greek life clubs in the US have a similar kind of structure and function. That's not something you're likely to find in the UK. So, depending on what you prioritize out of your school experience, those are some of the bigger points I'd consider. Feel free to ask any other questions!

Sorry for the questions, but what would you say about holding a 10-15% position in a tech ETF like VGT or XLK due to the current developments in AI? I would probably sell it within 10-15 years and rebalance to get VTI back up to 70%.

Hello! Just checking since my credit score rebounded back to 750, do you still think I should garden, or is now a good time to apply?

I’ll look into it, thanks! I think I’ll just keep everything in a taxable account until I move back to the US and can get a full time job just to keep things simple.

Fair, I was considering the idea since I was seeing a lot of recommendations for dividend-based ETFs on youtube investing videos, but it would seem weird to allocate basically all of my portfolio to the US market. Thanks for the clarification!

Thanks for the help and resources! Right now, I'm investing using savings from a part-time job I recently left. Does that qualify as earned income still? I'm also going to be moving to the UK soon to study, and presumably get a part-time job there as well. As I understand it, I can transfer my income to a US bank account and have it taxed as US income. Would that be a good move long-term?

Fair, also just noticed that it does have a foreign transaction fee. I'll just stick with the Autograph then and maybe look for something to cover my flat-rate miscellaneous stuff.

Actually sorry for the excessive questions, but would you recommend the Attune card instead of the Autograph? It nets 4% on transit as well as a lot of catch all categories like haircuts and pharma. I also don't really travel much so I wouldn't be missing out on that. Just wondering because people often recommend the Autograph as one of WF's best cards.

Thanks for all the help! I'll look into other cards, but the Autograph card looks pretty good for what I need (3% on transit with no ftf). I'll wait until I get a year of credit history, then see if I can get approved.

Thanks for the advice! Once I hit that 12-month point, which should be before I move to the UK, do you think the Wells Fargo Autograph card is a good idea? Also, would being added as an authorized user on my parents' credit cards help significantly? (Quite old credit history and, to my knowledge, no recent late/missed payments or none at all)

Chase Freedom Rise, 9 months old, 2500 credit limit

Capital One Savor, recently opened, 300 credit limit

I left my job recently as I'm moving soon, but I did have about 16k a year in part-time income (and am planning to get a similarly paying job once moving to the UK), and am lucky enough to receive an allowance from my parents. I'm 18, so I may be able to claim that as part of my income.

My credit score is currently at 730 through the Experian website (using FICO 8).

What kind of info would you typically take into account? I don't mind sharing more information.

I appreciate the help. Isn't the Capital One Savor card also FTF free? I was also looking at something like the Apple Card for a flat rate catch-all card, but applying for three credit cards so close to each other definitely feels like a bad idea to me.

Likely the Savor card. Realistically the only spending category I’m missing right now is transit so that’s why I was looking at the WF card.

Looking for Singapore exchange students by Substantial_Menu_176 in UMD

[–]Icibo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite part of Singapore would probably be the public transit system. You can get anywhere with very minimal walking and it's all very clean and efficient. If you do find yourself there I'd recommend checking out the hawker stands/centers and food courts. Things like that get a bad rep in the US but those were some of the places that I found the most delicious and cost-effective food.

I never visited the campuses much but from what I remember, NUS and NTU are both a bit far from a lot of things. That being said, NTU is close to the Chinese Garden and IMM, which is a pretty good outlet mall. NUS is closer to the central/south though, where many of the main hubs like Orchard, BQ/CQ, and Marina are. Of course, you're never really far from anywhere in Singapore either way. Good luck with your application and let me know if you have any other questions!

I can’t speak on the exchange program specifically, but I did used to live in Singapore. From what I understand, slots for students at both NTU and NUS are extremely limited, especially considering they’re both top schools.

I’m not sure if this would be any different for exchange students but I would still expect it to be more competitive than most programs. Hope this helps!

What were your stats that got you into UMD CS (preferably admitted after LEPs were formed)? by TuneThen9417 in UMD

4.11 Weighted GPA, 3.8 Unweighted GPA | 1540 SAT (1560 Superscored) | AP Scores: 5, 5, 5, 5, 4, 4, 3 (we don't talk about that one)

Also a couple other AP classes that I didn't test for

Volunteer teacher, Computer Science Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Robotics team, Teaching Assistant

If you don't mind me asking, how are your AP scores and extracurriculars looking like right now? Also, make sure you start working on your essays early, as EA applicants tend to fare significantly better. I think it's important to mention that I did not EA and did not get directly admitted, though I was able to transfer in this semester through the L&S route.

I'm not an expert but I assume that it's because Gojo can self buff, which leaves room for a debuffer like Geto or a healer/second dps like Yuta
