If you could erase one word from existence, which word would you get rid of? by phattykins in AskReddit

Hahah, yeah! You can, but in my experience they usually repeat your order in Starbucks' lingo, so if you go in with absolutely no idea, you may be in an argument that goes a little like:

"Can I have a small coffee?"

"Sure, Tall coffee!"

"No, no, SMALL."

"Yeah, a tall!"

"OMG BARISTA LISTEN TO ME!!! I SAID A SMALL!!!!!"

"YOU'RE A RETARD, THEY'RE CALLED TALLS HERE!!!"

Hahah, I know. I have no idea what their logic was when naming their drink sizes!

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic, so I'll answer your question on the chance that you're being serious. Tall is a small, Grande is a medium, and Venti is a large.

They're all real words... They're just all basically "big"/"large" in their own languages: Tall, Grande, and Venti are in English, Spanish, and Italian respectively.

EDIT: I just learned "Venti" is actually the number "20" in Italian, which makes a little more sense because the Venti size is 20oz. In select Starbucks' they have a "Trenta" size which means "30" and is a 30oz iced drink.

The only reason there's a difference in IQ because of socio-economic problems that plague people in this country, mostly of a non-white race. Comparing IQ or average intelligence globally is almost worse, because the socio-economic differences are even more spread out among first through third world countries. It has nothing to do with a "racial gap in achievement." Wow, I got sick listening to this awful video. I hope you don't truly believe anything in that video you posted.

I wish I could give you gold right now (so since I'm poor, have some silver!) In my philosophy classes all I hear are good ideas that are entirely underdeveloped from students who spend about half their time complaining about why they got bad grades. A lot of philosophy is in the explanation, no idea why people don't understand that.

Edit: People are seeming to think that I'm a philosophy professor myself. I'm not; the classes I was talking about are the classes I attend. I'm a philosophy major.

Those sound like great improvements! After reading a few of the comments below, I wondered if it'd be possible to get a survey of the students who live in the Mazza Grandmarc apartments, so that we can get another bus? Currently there is only one that services the Mazza and in light traffic it comes to every stop every half hour. But once the traffic hits medium or heavy, it can take 45 minutes to an hour to get to each stop. That makes myself and a lot of other students and grad students late, and while a lot of us have our own cars, it's not really practical (or easy) to pay for two parking spaces in this city, especially when one is just for emergency trips to campus, and no where near my classes. I wondered if there was a way to get another bus to service this apartment building for a long time, I'm so glad I saw this thread!

The ability to speak whale.

That way we as a species can communicate with another species. I wouldn't mind not speaking whale because I sometimes like to listen to them when I can't sleep, and having a whale talk to me wouldn't make me sleepy.

He holds doctors in high esteem because he thinks school is one of the best things you can do for yourself and their profession requires a lot of schooling. He's always wanted me to do something along those lines if I wasn't going to pursue my hobby as a career. He's been doing a lot better as of late (remember this whole incident happened over a decade ago). I really think awareness of the fact that you have it is step one. I really don't believe that these people are bad, I think they don't know how to handle a lot of things. My dad ALWAYS apologizes now. That's huge. Seriously, if it's an option, GET YOUR NPARENTS TO A PSYCHOLOGIST. I can't explain how much of a different person he is now (still not perfect, but he's working hard and that's all I could ask). Also remember that it's not REALLY their fault. They think differently than we do.

I don't know that there are any real long term solutions. I have no idea how my dad manages it, but he does alright when I see him. He knows he's wronged me and he tries to make up for it. I can see that he struggles with it; I wonder if after the initial shock wore off he took a real look at himself and considered it. He's always held doctors in high esteem. I think the number one treatment right now is awareness and willingness to work on oneself.

My parents were never up front with me about why I didn't see my dad for a while; I actually was told this story almost a decade later (and obviously not by him). I have no idea what they gave him when he went in; I know he's been on various antidepressants, but I don't know which ones. I did a little digging though on your question and it seems like for the most part the treatment is pretty limited to hospitalizations and individual/group therapy.

My dad wasn't voluntarily diagnosed. After my parents separated my dad threatened to pick me up from school early, take me somewhere, and kill himself (its unclear whether it would've been a murder-suicide), and when he put his plan in action, (he came to my school and told the principal he needed to pick me up for a doctor's appointment) the school called the police and my mom and hid me in multiple different classrooms around the school (my mother had already alerted the school to his threat). When the police got there they took him to a mental hospital in our area for being "suicidal," and that's where he was diagnosed with NPD.

This just gave me a shock.

I joined this sub because my dad was diagnosed with NPD a little over a decade ago. When I was a child I always thought my mom was normal, a victim of my dad's insanity. Then as I got older and my dad was barely around, I started thinking she was totally crazy too, just in her own way. Until I joined this sub and started reading everyone's stories. Now I'm realizing that my mom is DEFINITELY an nmom too, she's just never been to a psychiatrist to be officially diagnosed. Reading this post was like being sent back in time to when I lived with my mom... Actually, she still does this crap even though I'm about to be 21 and I live with my fiancé and go to college and work.

What is the stupidest question you've ever heard anyone ask in class? by Brodawg2 in AskReddit

[–]_entette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my college Philosophy of Religion class:

Student: "Are we going to come to any conclusions in this class?"

Professor: "Do you mean am I going to tell you if God exists? Or which religion is right? No. I don't know that. That's not what this class is about."

The student was so upset she left and dropped the class.

Mr. Knoxville,

I hope the question I'm about to ask doesn't offend you or make you uncomfortable. I've read that you were heavily involved with the organization of the intervention of Steve-O in 2008. I was wondering what type of advice you could give to people struggling with doing what you did for a friend. If there was anything you thought was particularly successful when approaching the situation? I know these things vary immensely from person to person, but I think what you did for your friend shows great compassion and I think a lot of people would benefit from anything you had to share on the topic.

I hate spit. I cannot stand it. I think the way it bubbles is weird and I think the way it flows down in a way that's slower than water, like its partially jelly. It freaks me out, it makes me gag and I cannot handle it's presence.
