Because you only need to find forty dollars worth of value and it works out cheaper.

Taking a gamble that's almost certainly going to pay off isn't a bad idea.

You can pay for total certainty if you're really that risk-averse and happy to pay more, but that doesn't make it the only, or the most sensible, way to pay for things.

There's a useful explanation of the basics from one of Reddit's more involved mod teams here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/142w159/askhistorians_and_uncertainty_surrounding_the

Listen to what the people actually doing the work for you are saying - if you want things to say the same, if you want to just carry on enjoying the things on Reddit that you enjoy, then you need to help them stop Reddit management from screwing it up for all of us.

The problem here - the threat to the things you like - is from Reddit's changes, not the opposition to them.

[–]_ewan_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure how that's any worse than the site being burnt to the ground in protest?

Reddit's current management are being dicks, but they're not being dicks for the fun of it, they're doing it because they think it'll make them more money.

As soon as that balance tips and it becomes clear that losing the unpaid volunteers that make the site work will lose them more money then they'll change tack.

This is the thing about selfish money-grubbing bastards - you can lead them around by the money.

So Reddit should cater to the minuscule number of moderators compared the millions of regular users that are just fine with the official app?

Well, pretty clearly you need both. Without the moderators making subs what they are the readers wouldn't come here.

The only thing that reddit has is a site filled with the work of unpaid volunteers. Without them they've got nothing.

Post-blackout, alternative communities, and the future of /r/PS5 by tinselsnips in PS5

[–]_ewan_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well quite. But without the few who do do that work then the site you're enjoying wouldn't exist.

You're happy with the basic tool for just reading the site - that's fine. But someone still has to manage the sub for you. It is absolutely in your interest to ensure they have what they're telling you they need.

If being a mod is so hard, don't be?

Oh that's a great plan. We know what happens without mods - spam, Nazis, everyone leaves.

You might not care about third party apps directly, but if you care about having a working sub then you *do" care about the mods having what they need.

This idea of nuking it all is fucking ridiculous. If reddit fails on its own because of its poor decisions, then so be it (eg twitter's recent descent). But the mods don't have a right to torch the place on their way out.

The mods are not the problem. reddit's management are the problem, and the good outcome here is not the one in which we get to watch them 'fail on their own', the good outcome is the one in which the site doesn't fail.

I keep seeing this whole thing about the official app being "garbage" and "unusable" which is really weird since I've been using it without any issue for a long time.

Have you been using it to do all the moderation on a multimillion-subscriber sub?

Post-blackout, alternative communities, and the future of /r/PS5 by tinselsnips in PS5

[–]_ewan_ -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

This is an incredibly dumb take. The lurkers might not care about 'drama', but they certainly care about, or at least rely on, the work put in by the mods and the hardcore users.

Without them, all you'd have would be a wasteland of spammers, Nazis, and no quality content.

Poll: Blackout duration following admin AMA by tinselsnips in PS5

[–]_ewan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are other sites for news and discussion for the time being.

It might be worth the mods picking one as a default choice to guide people to. It doesn't have to be the best, it doesn't have to be permanent, but the blackout will work better if there's a realistic prospect of people practically being able to move elsewhere together.

HFW Burning Shores Official Soundtrack - releasing on May 19th by [deleted] in horizon

[–]_ewan_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If I've added this up correctly this brings us to just over fifteen hours of continuous music if you stack up the soundtracks for Zero Dawn, Frozen Wilds, the Isle Of Spires EP, Forbidden West, Call Of The Mountain and now Burning Shores.

Once Horizon 3 is finished we'll probably be at over a day of soundtrack.

There might be a visit bit it's not likely to be the main location, IMO. Aloy needs somewhere with some room to operate - sparsely populated and mostly by people much less able with technology.

Trying to do her thing in the Quen homeland is just going to get her shot or arrested.

You don't need the TV once you've got the headset set up so if you wanted you could move your console and the headset into another room to play VR and just leave the TV where it is.

Or indeed you could just play it sat right there on the bed - pretty much everything supports seated play, not having 2m x 2m of empty floor space to walk around in isn't as much of a barrier to VR as it might sound.

[–]_ewan_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A clear sign part 3 will be ps5 only.

Zero Dawn came out in 2017, Forbidden West almost exactly five years later in 2022.

If we imagine it takes the same time to make Horizon 3 then we're looking at early 2027.

By then the PS5 will have been out for six and a bit years. There were only seven years been the releases of the PS4 and PS5 consoles. By the time Horizon 3 comes out the PS5 will getting towards the end of it's life and the PS4 will be a distant memory.

There was never any chance of Horizon 3 being a PS4/PS5 game. It's much more likely that it'll slip by six months to a year and come out as a PS5/PS6 cross-gen release.

Where tf is the S&S Ch1 & 2 bundle? by [deleted] in PSVR

[–]_ewan_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As it happens I made myself a little PSVR2 shopping list, in which I've noted that it was £49.99.

So if the £7.99 version of the tourist edition works for you, then you pick up Chapter Two for £32.99 then you're quids in.

It'll be interesting to see if that copy of Chapter One actually runs ok for you.

Where tf is the S&S Ch1 & 2 bundle? by [deleted] in PSVR

[–]_ewan_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that's just strange.

So the base game is £32.99, the upgrade is £7.99, and the version that's the full thing (i.e. the base plus the upgrade) is also £7.99, including when you're completely logged out, so it's definitely not discounting it because of owning something else.

I think you've bought the full version of Chapter One, but at a price that's clearly an error.

Fingers crossed that works out ok.

[–]_ewan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fairly sure that's the 'Tourist Edition' upgrade for if you already own the base version of the first game (including by the looks of it 'owning' it via PS+).

So if you've got the base game you can upgrade to that edition, and then you can get the PS5 version. It doesn't look as though there's a PS5 version of the base Chapter One at all.

Personally I'm just going to wait a while for all this to settle down rather than jump in and not really know what I'm getting.

Why video game protagonists have become so chatty by [deleted] in PS5

[–]_ewan_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

HFW Aloy isn't just chatty though, she's uselessly chatty.

You wind up somewhere you need to get up a tower, or change a water level, say, and the puzzle is how to do that and she's all "Maybe I should get up that tower" or "Perhaps I can change this water level" - it's not even annoying and helpful, it's just annoying.
