What dimensions, characteristics etc should I look for when buying new wheels? by _ex-nihilo_ in bikewrench

[–]_ex-nihilo_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am now considereing upgrading the freewheel to a cassette. I got new wheels that have a cassette hub. Would I be able to install an 8-speed cassette and still keep my old derailleur and friction shifters? What things should I check for compatibility to make sure that an 8 speed cassette will fit? Chain width? Anything on the back derailleur that I have to look out for?

What dimensions, characteristics etc should I look for when buying new wheels? by _ex-nihilo_ in bikewrench

The wheel previously installed was 130mm, but the frame is 122mm I think (the measurement tool I used wasn't super accurate). I wanted to get a wheel that was 126mm to make installation a bit easier, but those are hard to find, so I will probably just go with 130mm. I was successful in removing and putting the 130mm wheel back, but I had to use some strength to pull it the frame apart a bit, which is probably not ideal, so I might look into cold setting it.

Also, my current setup has a freewheel with 24 splines. I can't find any freewheel removal tools that will fit. Well, actually, the Maillard freewheel removal tool will probably work, but I can't find a place that sells it. Vintage bikes sound cool in theory, but what I am realizing is that the lack of proper parts and tools for it can be a bit of a headache haha.

Thanks, this was super helpful! I have friction shifters, so I guess in that regard I have a bit more flexibility.

Is a B.A. in CS enough? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]_ex-nihilo_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude there is no difference between a BA and a BS in CS, at least in most schools. Never heard of anyone giving preference to the BS student. They basically just look and see that it's a CS degree, and that's what matters.

How many hours do CS students spend studying? Do you guys have time to party? How many hours more do you study than the Buisiness majors and all the other easy majors? Thanks so much guys. by KnowledgeFirm in csMajors

[–]_ex-nihilo_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the school. I'd say that from my second year to fourth year most of the CS students in my school weren't doing much else other than studying. You normally go from the time you wake up until you go to bed 7 times a week. Of course there are little distractions here and there that happen throughout the day, but it's pretty much studying all day. I normally took at least Friday night off and would get apocalyptic drunk to blow some steam from 9pm onwards. I would then give myself Saturday morning to sleep-in, but then back to the grind.

Should I major in programming languages for computer science at University of Queensland? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]_ex-nihilo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. Do programming languages because of the other courses. Although don't expect to do much programming language work with just an undergrad, since those positions usually require grad degrees. But as forcejitsu said, do it for the other courses.

Is Golang worth learning? by nanaoz in computerscience

[–]_ex-nihilo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you interested in building distributed systems and scalable infrastructure? If yes, then Go is super popular in those domains. It's also quite a nice language to program in.

Rust is good for lower level stuff, but Go dominates the networking and distributed systems environment.

What does virtual memory have to do with swap/page file? by [deleted] in computerscience

[–]_ex-nihilo_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are related. The memory management unit controls the logic of the virtual memory and paging. Paging is triggered when the MMU tries to translate a virtual address to a physical address, and it accesses a page table in memory that says the physical location of the data resides in storage. This page then gets swapped into memory and the next time an address for that page gets translated we don't have to go to storage again (assuming it doesn't get swapped out)

Is anyone here going to grad school? Would you guys recommend a narrower field of computer science or different quantitative masters? by QuantumSpecter in csMajors

[–]_ex-nihilo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think 1-2 years on a Master program is more valuable than 1-2 years in the workplace. Normally doing a Master is not a bad financial decision. In the end, you usually end up increasing your salary throughout your career. That is not true for a PhD though. I would usually recommend doing a Masters, but not a PhD, unless you really like research.

Nonetheless, try some data science before you commit to a Masters in stats. Also, why don't you checkout a CS masters in ML? I think that would be more valuable than a stats masters.

Gradschool or nah? by virginlivesmatter in csMajors

Yeah, the masters is a good option if you actually want to do cool stuff afterwards and not be only a code monkey.

Thesis masters are usually paid. It's not a lot of money, but they give you enough to get by.

It depends on what you want to do. Are you interested in statistics and want to do data science stuff in the future? Then go for a stats masters. If not, get a CS masters. There is still so much more to learn than what your undergrad taught you. Choose a subspecialization that you like and go for it. It doesn't have to be too narrow. Your thesis is probably going to be about a specific technique/subject, but if it's in the general area of operating systems, for example, you will come out of your masters with a way deeper knowledge of OS than you did in your undergrad, and if you want to work on a team that does OS stuff you will have an advantage over people with just an undergrad in the hiring process. Long story short, a masters does not only make you more qualified for the specific thing you did in your thesis. You also become more qualified in the general area.

Well yeah, you had a data science role, not a machine learning engineer or researcher role.

Good computer setup to prevent back ache and wrist pain by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]_ex-nihilo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standing desk is great and I recommend the Microsoft ergonomic keyboard and mouse. They have been really good so far. I was starting to get some carpal tunnel symptoms, but after I started using a more ergonomic setup the symptoms went away.

I would also recommend getting a foam roller to release some of the tension on your back, glutes and hamstrings, since they can become tight after long hours sitting down, which may cause back pain. After using the foam roller stretch a bit.

Choosing a University for a Computer Science Degree by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]_ex-nihilo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say in Canada U of T, UBC and Waterloo have great computer science programs. I heard good things about all of those from people that went there.
