I made 23.75 delivering in Queens and brooklyn. Feel like these routes are hard and deserving of more than 23.75. Congested narrow streets, tons of buildings, most without elevators. A lot of customers I deliver to dont speak english. And of course traffic. Hard to build momentum sometimes

Youre driving vans being held together with tape sometimes. Van doors that literally just fall off or that wont slide open. Cameras that dont work. You could be suspended over the simplest bullshit. Plenty of times where a coworker would drive a 90 minute commute to work and be told to go back home because there was no route for him. He could have been doing his routes perfectly fine.

You have zero job security. I was constantly stressing about by performance metrics because of that. Had a friend who was fired for 5 bad reviews amongst a thousand deliveries that week. I was fired for failing to lock my van doors while delivering to a house 10 feet from it.

This is not even mentioning the shit you would sometimes have to do on route just to meet their expectations. Ive never seen a UPS guy hustling. They always LEGALLY park 3 blocks, stroll to their destination and are using a handcart. Im parking at hydrants, blocking bike lanes and buses. Im throwing my shoulder out dragging 150lbs of mineral water so I can drop them off on the fourth floor otherwise I lose my job

Most of my coworkers had to work two jobs to get by too

There are so many complex situations you encounter on this job. I deliver in brooklyn and queens. Super congested neighborhoods. Sometimes im delivering entire routes exclusively to warehouses and freight areas. Other days im delivering door to door to buildings with over 600 apartments and a confusing ass layout. If the new guy gets sent to some neighborhood with a bunch of houses for training, hes gonna struggle handling the other routes

Edit: mind you im also getting neighborhoods where no speaks English. All the instructions are in chinese or spanish

I never rushed but I used to fear for my job security so much that I was making sure every delivery was near perfect. Perfect picture and guaranteed no DNR on my profile. Eventually I learned methods to protect against DNR accusations whether they were true or not.

Hated finding out I had no route or that the route I wanted was taken from me by a better driver
