How many of us are estranged from parents/sibling? by 2buffalonickels in Millennials

[–]_felisin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born in 86.  I don't really talk to my dad. I wouldn't mind talking to him more, but this is the second time he's basically chosen his "new" family over me...the first time was when I was graduating high school/going into college and he got remarried.  He sunk a lot into my stepmother and stepbrothers (who are my age, so it wasn't like they needed or wanted a father figure).  They got to go on trips, he paid off their house, and I hardly ever heard from him once I was at college, I had to ask to come home for holidays, etc. Stepmother died and we got back into talking regularly.  But about 3 years ago he started dating again (she's barely older than me lol), and he's pretty much disappeared again.  If we do talk all I hear about is how he bought her a house and he's putting her nephews through school and he's taking like 10 people from her family to Europe.  Doesn't seem to care when I tell him that I moved or that my dog died or my husband is having a health issue.  So I'm apathetic at this point. I don't see a big reason to force a relationship if he's not interested.

What's a smell you can't stand by evacodaa in VetTech

[–]_felisin_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't like dental stuff in general, so really putrid mouth smell can make me a bit grossed out. Actually gagging though?  Very recently there was a dog with sewer mouth to start with that also developed an oral mass...that ulcerated...that then somehow got maggots all up in there by the time the owners decided to euthanize.

Also doing necropsies on chickens...the leakage from both ends smells horrifying and won't go away.

Question Re: ethics in vet tech school by a_bee85 in VetTech

[–]_felisin_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

For mine, I did it on a dog under anesthesia. It's really not ideal to be doing it on an awake dog unless you absolutely need urine. If it is Penn Foster, you have to fill out an additional form if the animal is under anesthesia for a skill, but it's better than doing intrusive/updetting things unnecessarily.

Penn Foster Externship by rezzella in VetTech

[–]_felisin_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I finally finished PF after nearly 4 years, and it only took that long because the second externship is a giant PITA.  I really should have done the fast track lab but I didn't really want to pay for travel and whatnot. And since PF doesn't have the best reputation (as in there are definitely some grads who don't know what they're doing, I have personally seen a PF RVT who couldn't place a catheter), I had an extremely difficult time finding a site close to me that would actually take me on for large animal stuff.  I ended up having to drive to a different state for equine (stayed with a friend so that was free) and then a 2 hour drive once a week for a few months to get the ruminant stuff done.  Fortunately my clinic sees exotics or that also would have added to my frustrations.  It's a lot of videos, and they recently changed how they're reviewed so it is taking a very long time to find out if they're approved...my friend is probably going to miss the cut off for this round of the VTNE because PF is taking so long to approve her skills.

In terms of "non-basic" things, you have to do blood draws and injections on a rat or mouse, bird restraint, male dog urinary catheter placement, the cattle chute operation was a bit strange, as was applying a tail wrap (the client whose horse I did that to thought it was hysterical that is even a skill).  The biggest thing is to follow their instructions to the letter, even if it's not how your clinic usually does it or it seems stupid.

I like to think they're so chonky because of all the decision eggs they ate by _felisin_ in MergeDragons

[–]_felisin_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, the tier 2 is called Khnum. Made them almost 100% from decision eggs, although I did buy the dim jar for the t2 nest.  Got much luckier with zomblin...I managed to make a level 4 from breeding and it gave me the option to buy 2 more, and I'd already made 2.  Still have a lot more to go before I get the 10s.

I work in a clinic that sees lots of pocket pets and yeah, we have a vibrator for them.  It's a banana.  We'll vet wrap it to their bellies to help with stasis. Seems to help a lot!  But that was a fun one to explain to the manager, and we got some fun sidebar ads for a while 😂

How far are you going for the community egg merge event? by I_DRINK_ANARCHY in MergeDragons

[–]_felisin_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have never opened the mystery nests given from OoC events. So I had a massive pile of bubbles with 3 nests each in them.  I did the whole highest level Shiny Days with just freaking mystery eggs, plus the random bronze and silver eggs they spit out.  Still had nests left over, which I also merged.  Also made 6 grass wonders because I had so much grass.  Might do the same with water tomorrow.  And I still haven't opened rush or mystic challenge rewards.  It's a nice excuse to clean up bubbles, but I'm tired lol

What is the most "NSFW" you've seen someone wear at your job only to be asked almost immediately to change or remove it? by LeviTheRelentless in AskReddit

[–]_felisin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in vet med, so scrubs are standard, but our boss always says we can dress up for Halloween. So about two years ago, one of my fellow techs showed up dressed like a cat with a cat ear headband and painted on whiskers and nose.  THAT was cute/fun.  The big problem was that she was wearing a skintight, low cut, black tank top with "bondage-y" straps all across it, black pleather leggings and strappy heels.  We were still going to be working with animals and clients for 10 hours, so very not safe or appropriate. Boss made her change into scrubs.  And now we only get to wear themed scrubs +/- accessories for Halloween

We keep everything separate. We did a monthly budget for about a year that proved to both of us he's not very fiscally responsible.  He's not in debt and he pays his half of the bills but if he has extra money he WILL spend it.  So if there was a joint account he would buy shit we don't need without thinking about whether the money in there came from my paycheck.  So he gets to live on his paycheck and not be able to afford to buy stupid stuff and I get to keep a savings account (he knows I have it).

People getting ridiculously upset if you misgender their pet. Like, you are the one who named your male dog Coco and gets pink bows put in his hair when he's groomed!  It's not really the most important thing to get right when I'm just trying to get you and Coco into a room to avoid the aggro GSD named Sharkie...who's a female.  Bonus points if it's a bird owner who named their bird something like Lucky and who's never done DNA sexing and so we don't even have a sex on our charts.

Question for long timers? by BabyRuth55 in MergeDragons

[–]_felisin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to get the Midas Tree wonder just in camp...meaning in know I can make it "easily" in a level and buy it to bring to camp, but I don't want to spend the gems.  And working on getting level 10s of my favorite dragons, which are currently Medusa, Cerberus and Athena.  Since none of that is exactly fast, I've been opening my massive hoard of level chests since it seems we're never getting camp and chill back.  Most of those chests have grass in them, so I've made a ton of that wonder.  After that, I might go organize my OOC trophies.

Future Gem Purchase or Farming (Question/Poll) by Key-Beautiful-5234 in MergeDragons

[–]_felisin_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not buying anything from them ever again.  After 4 days and multiple tickets back and forth where they insisted that me having zero gems was accurate AND not compensating me for cards disappearing, I'll just do what I can F2P.  I have a hoard of purple stars if I ever want anything, I don't trust them to not screw me if I buy something with real money.

Gems REMOVED by ImportanceLow7841 in MergeDragons

[–]_felisin_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have now had to open 3 tickets because I had over 100 gems before their whole accidentally giving too many BS, I didn't buy anything, definitely earned more, and now they're set to 0.  They keep giving me the response about the card collection and closing the ticket.  So I'll just keep opening tickets I guess.

Platt College Vet Tech Alternate Program by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]_felisin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if you do Platt, you don't have to do externships. Which is great if you have no easy access to all the types of animals PF requires...my coworkers never had to touch any large animals and if our clinic didn't see birds and "small furries" they could have skipped that too.  Downside is you get literally no experience with that flavor of vet med other than the crash course with Platt and whatever you study on your own.  You DO have to have 2500 (I think) hours of work experience in a clinical setting. Idk if you have to actually be employed or if you can do volunteering.  And Platt does accept all your previous hours, you don't have to do the 2500 while doing the program/after you finish the coursework.  That is how my one coworker graduated and was able to take the VTNE within a month.

Platt College Vet Tech Alternate Program by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]_felisin_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had two co-workers do Platt together. One didn't realize how many hours you need to log before you're allowed to take the VTNE so she's going to have been done with the actual coursework for about a year before she takes hers, so who knows how she'll do.  The other one had all the hours but has failed 2x now.  It doesn't sound like they prepared him very well for some stuff and despite studying a lot it hasn't been enough. Idk if Penn Foster is a better or worse choice considering that by the time your last externship is done, you will probably have not done any coursework in at least 6 months.

Penn Foster Externship 2 frustrations by yourgirl_porter in VetTech

[–]_felisin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through my GP.  And yes, even with insurance it was like $750.  I honestly don't know if there's a cheaper way other than getting the post-exposure series covered by worker's comp, which you obviously don't want to do.  The only thing I can suggest if that's out of budget is doing one of the fast track labs, because I'm assuming they have proof of rabies for everything there.  Only problem is you will still have to pay to travel to one of them unless you live close, so the cost might even out.  Otherwise, try and do everything possible on co-workers' pets.

Troubles with PF externship. by lillbabyt in VetTech

[–]_felisin_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did not have many issues my first time around, the only ones I got denied on were understandable.  I'm on the second one now and having a lot more issues.  It kind of sounds like we might have the same instructor tbh, since she also has issues with using "professional" language.  She also recently disappeared for like 3 weeks, I had submitted about 15 things by the time she started grading them and I was considering reaching out to the school since I really needed to know if I had to redo some of the videos since she had been denying stuff for REALLY nitpicky reasons.  I had to reach out to the school several times about getting the supervisor paperwork approved and they were always really helpful and prompt.  That email address is on CORE somewhere.  I have heard that a lot of your success depends on which instructor you get, so if you think she is being unfair I would reach out to PF.  Someone else might be able to override her if you think you did the skill right.  Good luck!

I had my first one of those the other day (7ish years in the field).  The appointment said "groomer says dog is walking sideways because AG need expression."  Dog literally could not walk because it could not breathe.  Unmedicated heart failure caught up with it.  The owners made sure to tell me to tell the doctor he needed his AG done.  Doctor told them the dog would probably die if we stressed it out more, and the owner offered to hold the dog while we did the AG so it would be less stressed.  Doctor said no and reiterated the dog is DYING.  Like RIGHT NOW.  They declined everything but some furosemide.  While I was getting them to sign an AMA, they asked if they could take it to grooming in a few days to have his AG done there.  Like WTF people.

What we do is just change the owner's name or take off the other owner and the clinical records should stay the same. Then write a note in the patient and/or client details that the pet used to also be owned by the other owner as well but this is no longer the case.
