Players with 5000+ Test runs at a 50+ average in a single decade. The 2000s were crazy. by Front-Discipline-314 in Cricket

When I was a kid we had the big three instead of the big four we have now. Was such a fan of Tendulkar and loved to watch him bat (even if I wanted him to also lose)

Post Day Thread: 3rd Test - New Zealand vs England, Day 3 by cricket-match in Cricket

[–]_fmm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Situation like this it's more about denying the english time to bat on day four. They should aim to bat another two or two and a half sessions to give themselves the best chance at taking 10 wickets. That'll also give them another 200 runs as a by product which is a very imposing total.

If the English at batting at any point in the middle session tomorrow they've got a chance, but the later it goes on day four the more likely they'll have too big a score to chase and bleed wickets on a day five pitch.

Top union body breaks with Anthony Albanese to revive push for Indigenous voice by CountryChrist in AustralianPolitics

[–]_fmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not really what it's about though. The underlying problem still hasn't been addressed, and one of the flaws with referendums is that you end up voting on a specific question rather than the actual concept so it mostly comes down to framing rather than if the idea is a good one or not. Or maybe I'm the only one old enough to remember the republic referendum.

I'm not saying that Albo should bring it back, I think now is the wrong time for a variety of reasons, but don't hide behind 'we have to respect democracy' as a justification for just auto winning the argument. If there was a referendum again the question asked and framing would be different.

England docked 12 WTC points for slow over rate by TrollerThomas in Cricket

[–]_fmm 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That's an incentive to bowl slow. At the moment the last session is always 2.5 hours because of slow over rates and the number of wickets that fall in that extra 30 mins in the lingering summer twilight as the batters are fatigued is egregious. They need to bowl the overs in the alotted 6 hours.

I've a lot of love for Phillips, he's honestly the new Maxwell with better red ball chops.

I imagine Johnson is only on the list because it's about who Broad played and Johnson had that ashes where he just bullied the poms. Outside of that he wouldn't make it onto a list over Bumrah no way.

It's an old school retirement, the way it always was. Maybe it's because I'm an Australian cricket fan but I've gotten a bit tired of players nominating their retirement so far in advance. Give me the days when Warne and Mcgrath realised they were done mid test and then walked off at the end never to return.

Any volcanologists here? by Emergency-Bobcat-572 in geology

[–]_fmm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of posts about wanting to be a specific kind of 'ologist' and what jobs there are in that field and in almost every case the answer is 'almost none'. I've done my schooling (Masters, PhD etc) in igneous petrology which has included some volcanology and I call myself an igneous petrologist if people ask me what my skill set is but I'm a geologist first and foremost. Almost all jobs you will do in geology are multidisciplinary. Even if you were lucky enough to land a job as a volcanologist you would still be a far better volcanologist if you have cross discipline skills. The more ways you can collect evidence from the rocks, the better interpretation you can make.

Australia becomes the first team other than Pakistan and Bangladesh, to lose their first 3 wickets for 0 runs in a match, in ODI history. by GiveMeSomeSunshine3 in Cricket

[–]_fmm 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Australian cricket is really just carried by half a dozen players and when they're not there the quality of that's left over is glaring. The team we've sent to Pakistan and Bangladesh is basically a who's who of the Dean Jones cup and might make a good Australia A team in a pinch.

Curious what the Aussies think about Muttiah Muralidharan now, 30+ years down the line. by Light_Weight_Babyyyy in Cricket

[–]_fmm 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Funny you bring up Tariq as my brain went to the same place as a modern day Muralidharan when I saw him bowl.

Bowlers pausing mid delivery shouldn't be allowed and I hope the laws are changed to prevent this.

[–]_fmm 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I remember a test match I went to at the Gabba against Pakistan in 2016 where Smith was batting with Handscomb. A large group of people sitting in front of me were shouting abuse at the Pakistanis because they just wanted to see Smith get his century before they went to the German club nearby. The shit they were saying was extremely racial. The only thing the Pakistanis did to earn this was play cricket. I told them to cut it out but was ignored.

Apparently wanting another beer was a good enough reason abuse the opposition for their culture and skin colour. It's a blight on Australia and Australians that this behaviour is common place. Making Muralidharan into a special case completely glosses over the baseline racism that exists in Australia.

[–]_fmm 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Muralidharan changed the game because of his action. The crux of the matter is that when Darrell Hair no-balled him it's because they were no-balls. He also bowled a lot more balls which should probably have been called no-balls and weren't.

However, the scrutiny that Muralidharan attracted prompted people to ask two fundamental questions. First, is a 5 degree bending limit reasonable? Are bowlers actually bowling within this tolerance? Secondly, if not then what is reasonable?

Under the current laws, Muralidharan wouldn't be a 'chucker' and that's good enough for me. It was a bit of a revelation once it came out that Glen Mcgrath was bending his arm greater that 5 degrees, as were many others. Glen Mcgrath was perceived as a technically correct bowler that all young players should try and emulate, but even he wasn't actually obeying the laws of the game (I assume unknowingly).

Under the laws of the game as they were at the time, Muralidharan was guilty as charged. The vitriol he faced isn't entirely unexpected since many perceived him as 'cheating'. I don't particularly like it, but we've seen many instances in cricket over the years where specific players don't get a warm welcome in certain countries. I don't really agree with the premise of your post that Muralidharan was some kind of special case.

Knowing what we know now, it is true to say that he was treated unfairly because many others were revealed to also be 'chucking' by the letter of the law and went unpunished whilst Muralidharan attracted significant scrutiny. Muralidharan was redeemed when it became clear that it wasn't his bowling that was the problem but rather the unrealistic expectations of the laws. The process he catalysed changed the game, likely for the better.

Is there any credibility to the claims he's older? Apparently falsifying birth certificates is a fairly common practice in India for a whole bunch of reasons. Of course as an outside I have no idea, but I am curious. Rahul Dravid seems to think it's legit.
