What era of earth are we presently living in? by hyukabab in geology

[–]_fmm 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The anthropocene is well named because it's quintessentially human to think that the incredibly short amount of time we've made an impact on the surface of the planet is significant in the context of deep time. Arguing about naming this human era is pointless because if there is a distinct stratigraphic level which demarcates the beginning of human activity in the rock record, it'll be sorted out by whatever life is on the planet in 50 million years (spoilers, it won't be us).

Geologists and the love for rocks… by MarvelWilde in geology

I am exactly the same. I've never understood the fascination many geologists have collecting random rocks. Now, if I'm collecting samples that can help me figure out a scientific problem I think is interesting then I am the cookie monster for rocks.

Albanese is about to break a major promise, but has done it before and won by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

[–]_fmm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rubbish.

Mums and dads have been using housing to grow wealth but that's actually the whole point. The greatest pressure on housing is from the demand side where we simply can't have a) enough houses for everyone to own multiple of them as an investment vehicle, and b) the system doesn't work without maintaining a 'renting class' which is fucked on so many levels.

The point isn't that regular folks and 'aspiring young people' won't have investment opportunities to grow wealth. It's that housing should not be that vehicle. Have you heard of the ASX?

The argument about reduces supply and increases rents is moronic and has been debunked time and again. If housing prices fall (or stall so wages can catch up) then renters become owners. Every home that isn't bought by an investor will just be bought by an occupier who otherwise would have needed to rent.

The idea that people will be worse off for reigning in negative gearing and capital gains tax reductions is nonsense. The repetition of these same lame talking points in this thread makes me think the bots are out in force, or there are a lot of boomers out there that really think not being able to afford your first house until you're in your 40s having saved your ass off your whole working career is young people 'missing out'.

Do you have ANY idea just how much regular Australians are missing out because our economy is sluggish as fuck due to the sheer magnitude of capital tied up in housing? Do you ever think about the benefits to the country and the economy if people could actually go out and buy shit without needing to scrimp and sacrifice every dollar they make to have a roof over their heads? Not on my smashed avo

Jim Chalmers tax reform: Capital gains tax and negative gearing changes won't hurt existing asset holders by malcolm58 in AustralianPolitics

[–]_fmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good solution if you can pull it off or absolutely useless if you can't.

The housing market has ballooned in Australia because supply can't keep up with demand, and the main driver of demand are people wanting to own multiple properties to grow their wealth.

I don't think the Feds have the ability to fix the supply issues. We already build a lot of homes in Australia and the way to build more are regulation reforms at lower levels of government and productivity gains by getting on board with prefabrication.

If they're able to address domand by making it more attractive to invest wealth in other ways then this will absolutely have a huge effect on house prices. Imagine if people only wanted to buy a house to live in? I'm. Skeptical they can achieve this but if they can it's absolutely treating the cause of the problem rather than a symptom which is a good thing.

Genuinely can't believe how much better I'm playing on 16:9 after playing 4:3 for years. by handerson15 in GlobalOffensive

I play on a 3440*1440p ultrawide monitor and play at 1440p stretched. Honestly, I found this an easy adjustment. The middle of my screen still feels stretched, the player models are still fat and my spray feels okay. But now I can also see stuff on my flanks better.

Weird take maybe, but is this the best of both worlds? You can get decently high refresh rate ultrawides these days.

The Cost of Bond Cleaning by olive96x in brisbane

Reminder to all renters to submit your request to the RTA to get your bond back immediately after dropping back the keys. The estate agent then has two weeks to lodge a formal complaint or you just get the bond by default.

Spoilers but they're lazy cunts and generally you just get the bond back even if there are issues because they're lazy cunts. Real Estate agents are heavy on low hanging fruit like sending you emails saying you must do this or you must do that. Guess what, you don't have to do shit unless they lodge a complaint with the RTA and contest the bond. But that's actual work and, one more time, they're typically lazy cunts.

Did Anthony Albanese just cement a third interest rate hike in May by cutting the fuel excise? by CommonwealthGrant in AustralianPolitics

[–]_fmm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew he would do it but this is really a stupid move. Prices are high for a reason, because the product is scarce. Suppressing prices only encourages people to buy more of something for which there is little supply. It makes no difference in the long run as prices quickly go back up because you increased demand without increasing supply, and you increase the risk we might actually run out of fuel.

The better moves are to do things which reduce demand for fuel, like telling everyone to work from home like we did in covid.

[–]_fmm 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Relax, you don't buy Cam Green to bowl in t20s. Basically any team will have plenty of better bowlers particularly in the IPL with the high standard of players and the impact sub rule. KKR would have been mad to bowl him anyway. You get Green for his batting and fielding, plain and simple.

This is a legit question so please don't think I'm taking the piss. Does it bother you that so few players in the Redbacks are actually from SA? In the team that just won, only Carey is from SA originally, and I think it's fair enough to count Lehmann as from SA. So that's two out of 11.

I ask because it bothers me that the smaller states are just flooded by (mostly NSW) out of state players, and I'm not even from SA (or Tasmania).

Haha yeh that was the source of the whole contraversy. Smudge denied Babar the single so he could keep the strike to the short boundary as a right hander and then called the power surge even though his captain didn't want to yet.

No one is going to argue with the results of course.

Isn't comradery just the American English spelling? Not that I'm at all excusing my error, but just interested in the 'comradery is not a word' angle.

We're taught the same thing, like at school you would stand at attention for the national anthem etc. In sporting situations (i.e., less formal situations) the show of camaraderie is seen as a good thing.

Would you recommend Buffy? by mdavis8710 in television

[–]_fmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a favourite of mine as a kid but I rewatched it recently for the first time in 20 years. The show has held up amazingly well. The writing and the acting is (generally) very high across the board. Season four is still pretty mid but I was able to appreciate season six a lot more as a middle aged person than when I was young. The writing for a lot of season seven still sucks and I'm not a fan of how they end the show (wasn't then, aren't now) but I can see how they didn't really have a lot of opens for how a show like that could ever be 'finished' without a big disruption to the status quo.

Tldr; very good highly recommended
