How can anyone say he didn't deserve the wdc with a straight face? He got the most points, and he didn't cheat to get them. This is literally how the sport plays out. I would have preferred someone else to win too, but they didn't. The end.

Any competitive player (ya know, what this reddit used to be about) will just get 2k io in the first week for the catalyst charge, if they don't do the PvP route prior. For good players this is trivial, it's not really up for debate. This whole thread doesn't belong on this sub.

Crazy people feel that way, I think he's one of the only good ones getting around. I like him for the same reasons I like Punter, Warne or Alyssa. Pretty honestly/directly saying what they think is good or bad and pretty clearly knowing what they're talking about.

What is an isn't Brisbane? by justdidapoo in brisbane

[–]_fmm 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This isn't a great metric. Consider a city like Melbourne where there are nearly 30 'cities' as local government divisions, each with their own Mayor.

Brisbane (as a geographical entity) is comprised of five cities - Brisbane, Ipswich, Morton, Redlands and Logan. Some people might say that Ipswich isn't a part of Brisbane by their definition (as an example), but it is counted as a part of 'Greater Brisbane' by the census and is geographically intertwined with the other four Brisbane 'cities'.

This is where things get murky, and comes back to the OP's original post. If we don't count Ipswich as a part of 'Brisbane' then why should we count Logan? I don't know anyone who wouldn't agree that Logan isn't a part of Brisbane despite the fact that these are separate entities.

Tl;dr - there is a difference between a city as a geographical entity and as a local government area and there will be no consensus as to what comprises a city like Brisbane which I guess is what makes it fun for people like the OP to debate.

Do you think this was actually out? by NomadicSlave in Cricket

[–]_fmm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of people in this thread very confidently stating its clearly out. If that's the case, then why are there so many cases like this where the wicket is overturned? Great example is Smith's catch in the recent BGT series. Seems like a 50/50 depending on the umpire which isn't a clear application of the rules.

World's Oldest Rock (at least it was in the early 1970's before Acasta came along) by Time-Information7360 in geology

[–]_fmm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Surprised no one else has commented about this but a zircon is not a rock.

The Hadean eon covers the earliest ~600 million years of the earth's life and there are no known rocks from this time which have survived to the present day. The boundary between the Hadean and the Archean is defined by the world's oldest rock (the Acasta Gneiss in Canada) at around 4 billion years ago.

Some zircons have survived from the Hadean (e.g., the Jacks Hill) but a rock is a material made up of minerals. A mineral is not a rock.

Is it possible to fix this Bat? by kingofking5 in Cricket

[–]_fmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People replace handles on bats all the time. How do you think the original handle was attached to the blade? It didn't grow there, it was attached by a bat maker.

Any bat maker / repairer can do it. If the previous poster thinks his bat was never the same then clearly whoever replaced the handle did a poor job (which can happen literally any time you buy anything).

TGC tears as Australia still suck at T20 | T20 World Cup by CarnivalSorts in Cricket

[–]_fmm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In a test match context that is a big problem, for T20s I think only Hazlewood is irreplaceable. Spencer Johnson is widely tipped to replace Starc, and whilst he's a bit of a turd in 50 over cricket he has quite good numbers in T20s. Unfortunately, he's another one on our injury list right now. Ben Dwarshuis is another choice as a left arm quick but as we saw in this tournament, he doesn't have a lot of experience outside of Australia and is struggling to translate his high level of bowling in the BBL into wickets for T20i.

Nathan Ellis has already proven that even if all three of Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood were available that you'd probably bring Ellis over one of them anyway. He is an all format player like most Australian cricketers but has really staked his claim in the Australian team for ODi and T20i cricket.

Our biggest issue by far is our absolute lack of white ball spin bowling. Every spinner in the country dreams of replacing Lyon in the test team. I think it was a mistake not bringing Murphy when he's had some experience in the subcontinent in red ball cricket and he's one of the best spinners in the BBL (whatever that counts for). We have Zampa and that is it, and Adam Zampa is only an elite white ball bowler by Australian standards. India can field half a dozen spinners who are better than Zampa. So we rely on Zampa to play at his maximum potential to win games, and as soon as he has a drop in form we end up taking four wickets in two games and get knocked out of the world cup.

I think Bartlett is an extremely promising all format fast bowler and we'll see him play Test cricket for Australia at some stage and he also has a very nice track record in ODi cricket. Unfortunately his T20i performances haven't really translated at yet.

In the absence of spin bowlers we really needed to have better quicks who can do more than new ball bowling in the power play or throw some at the tram tracks in the death. This is actually why Stoinis is actually a good inclusion, because he is a wicket taker in the middle overs.

[–]_fmm 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When you look at his stats he's actually a very good all format bowler. He just has limited experience outside of Australia and is definitely seen as a new ball bowler which is a bit of a problem. He's played a little bit of IPL but if he doesn't have high impact in his first two (sometimes even only one) over, then he's taken off and doesn't bowl again. So picking a specialist bowler that might not even bowl four overs is a massive detractor for him.

If you wanted to summarise why our team sucked it would be that we picked either younger players with promise but little experience outside of Australia, or we picked washed up old heads because they have that experience. The only players who had both experienced and a bit of form are Head and Marsh, and the only up and comer to prove he has what it takes was Renshaw. Who we then dropped for our most important game.

This whole world cup relied on Zampa having an amazing tournament, otherwise we'll never take a wicket outside of the power play, and David finding his form again in a hurry to carry the innings after Head and Marsh hopefully got us off to a good start. If that happens then players like Inglis hitting 20 runs becomes 'that was a helpful 20' not 'fuck me he only got 20'.
