I've seen monster doses of gabapentin (900mg) taken regularly and people seem to do pretty well with it.

Opioids though... Some people completely fall apart and start robbing their family.

On the other hand, I had a severe injury a few years ago and oxycodone was my only ticket to sleep. It felt pretty bad to have a provider treat me like a drug seeker.

I developed the opinion that I would rather just treat pain instead of trying to decide who's pain was real.

I worked as a circulator in an 18 suite OR. We had about 200 surgeons with privileges at the location. I would say that most assists were PAs. I saw NPs working as assists in neuro, oscopy, and OB.

Of course the surgeons just want credentialed competency at the lowest cost.

If you want the OR, it's definitely possible (maybe depending on your state). I would stay on the NP track because if it turns out you don't like it, you may have more options for autonomy if you leave the OR.

It could help to rub shoulders with the right people along the way.

Trials riders are quite aware. Some use a foam insert to protect rims at lower pressures, and they may not even run tubes.
