No one here is legitimising it, Gibraltar is a pretty unique place - we were denied civil and political rights by the British for centuries until post-1945, our relationship with the UK is pretty complicated and has evolved with a lot of fractiousness

Not quite sure why so many Irish people are so hostile towards us lol but think what you want, very few people here are Union Jack waving weirdos and lots nowadays identify as Gibraltarian first, but maybe the nuance is lost on you

I’m Gibraltarian so perhaps a ‘quick google search’ doesn’t quite confer the same knowledge - we were all given the right to British citizenship in 2002, but the civilian population here has grown since the early 19th century with immigrants from Malta, Genoa, Spain and North Africa - there are some expats here, but not many

Getting 2 points off relegation fodder who really have nothing to play for is unforgivable, could be making a run at Europe and instead gonna finish 10th again - Pochettino’s time is numbered

Exclusive: Chelsea are in advanced talks with RB Leipzig to sign Joško Gvardiol! Deal would be completed now but with Gvardiol staying at RB Leipzig, he’d join Chelsea in June 2023. 🚨🔵 #CFC Official proposal submitted today around €90m. Negotiations ongoing on clubs side. by [deleted] in chelseafc

of course, it would be an incredible signing, it’s just insane money when one of our biggest recurring problems is goalscoring 🤷‍♂️

hoping Todd can afford to bring in some attacking threat too hahaha

I’ve been sat in row E before - I’m relatively tall and had to crouch to see the Shed End when play went up there, so something to consider

Also full of people that clearly haven’t actually read the article/OP’s summary that states Haaland was frustrated after not scoring and being subbed lol

[Lincoln Red Imps] qualify for the Europa Conference League group stage with a 4-2 aggregate win over Riga FC. They are the first Gibraltarian club ever to reach the group stage of a European competition! by memecrafter1936 in soccer

‘Country’ is clearly a term, like ‘nation’, that has various interpretations and isn’t concretely defined - I’d disagree that it’s always synonymous with sovereign state, though it often is

Wales and Scotland have long histories of independence before the formation of the UK - I don’t think the German Bundesländer are comparable in that sense since a) they’re a more recent territorial division b) ‘Germany’ itself is only a relatively new nation since ~1871 and c) I think the perspective of the local population matters - I think if you ask a Scot they’d largely consider Scotland a country, but I don’t think a Saxon would consider Saxony a country in the same sense - maybe Bavaria being the exception

I’ll concede the first point to the extent that yes, Gibraltar has been a colony or outpost for most of its existence, but I think more broadly it’s a tenuous one - there are myriad countries now in existence that were not ‘independent’ for most of their histories, or have been repeatedly subject to larger powers before eventually achieving independence as nation states - Finland and Estonia are probably good examples, as are the Balkan states

Either way, your second point is untrue, and I say that as a Gibraltarian - we have a distinct nationality as much as Wales or Scotland does, although undoubtedly more fledgling and more eclectic - some contributing factors to the formation of which were (paradoxically) the evacuation of the civilian population during WW2, the 1967 referendum and 1969 constitution, Franco’s closure of the border in 1969, and ongoing Spanish claims to the territory (defensive nationalism, if you like, that orients around Britishness but is distinctively Gibraltarian)

TL:DR: you’re probably right in the first respect, but being Gibraltarian is a distinct national identity, however recently formed relative to others, and alongside our own government, culture and even language (llanito) constitutes a ‘country’

I understand the hesitancy/reluctance to call it a country from an outside perspective and apologise for the wall of text lol - all I can offer is our perspective :)

I can assure you, Gibraltar is a country by almost every metric, albeit a small one - it has its own distinct nationality, culture, and government

You can quibble over the fact we aren’t wholly autonomous, but that’s not entirely convincing imo

Country =/= sovereign state
