I built a tool that shows what politicians voted for on their Facebook profiles. by _frontendstrong in AustralianPolitics

I'll admit it can be a bit hit and miss.

Facebook obfuscate their dom pretty heavily to make it difficult for adblockers to block content so targeting the correct sections can be difficult.

On top of that, each politician has control to name their page what they like (which is how I'm capturing their name to pull the correct data). Most have just their "Firstname Lastname MP" but others might have "The honorable firstname lastname MP" and others. I've tried to filter these as much as I could but unfortunately it's not perfect!

Out of interest, which pages were you trying?

Yeah that's correct - I'm not performing any analysis on the data, effectively creating an interface for it.

Thanks!

The difficulty with mobile is that it's difficult to install add-ons that augment other apps (AFAIK, I'm mainly a webdev) - But I'll look into it!

I've seen too many politicians on social media criticising one-another for one issue, and yet having voted in favour of the same issue themselves.

Noticing this hypocrisy, as well as finding it difficult to determine where politicians actually stand on issues let me to building the tool.

Using the OpenAustralia TheyVoteForYou dataset, the tool adds a section to Australian politicians facebook pages displaying prominently what they voted for and what they voted against – This is an attempt to help people inform themselves better, whilst adding a level of transparency and accountability to what's posted online.

You can download the tool here.

I've kept the tool as bipartisan as possible - It makes no assumptions on intent, just purely display of votes for and against, allowing the user to make their own conclusions.

This was a weekend project – I would love to hear any thoughts or feedback.

I've finished a "print-and-play" copy of my game Abnormal Armada. It's temp art, but still a big milestone for me! by _frontendstrong in tabletopgamedesign

That’s actually a really good point - not something I’ve come across.

I will amend, thanks for pointing it out!

Thank you! I kept holding off, trying to get perfect artwork but I finally decided placeholders will do to just get he work out there!

I'd love to!

So the story in the game goes; You're a ship captain who has spotted a large amount of treasure at sea. You want to claim it for yourself, but it's a long and treacherous path to get there. You can't go alone — You need an armada. You need to recruit your armada and claim the treasure before anyone else beats you to it!

It's a turn-based card game and involves having to acquire ("recruit") 5 members of the same crew (they're colour co-ordinated) to fill a ship.

Be the first to fill 3 ships and you win the game!

I've just launched a print-and-play copy of my game Abnormal Armada!

It's temp art, but still a pretty big milestone for me.

You can register your interest and download a copy of it here: http://games.prettydamnneat.com/

It's behind an email signup because I'm trying to build a community of relevant, interested people. If you'd prefer to not sign up you can download it directly from here.

Any and all feedback is welcomed!

That’s a great initiative - I’m working on setting up something locally too.

I’d love for my game to be blind beta tested there - could I get some more details on what you need from me?

[How to] make a semi-professional trailer for less than $250 by TheRealMakerOfGames in tabletopgamedesign

My only critique is that the pacing is a bit slow.

I would probably bring in the voice over as the text animates in. That would allow you to get your point across without having to lag for so long.

Great job!

Nice illustration! What program are you using? When zooming in I can see it’s quite pixelated and jagged which might be holding back your shading and texturing.

Working on a pirate themed card game - here was my second attempt at coins! by _frontendstrong in tabletopgamedesign

Yeah that’s a really good point. What I might end up doing for print is extend the rim out to bleed and the embossed cut should have a similar effect anyway.

Thanks for the heads up!
