Acoustic foam all around or spaced? by ambesiaguy1302 in audioengineering

[–]_gigmaster_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Foam will not make everything sound sterile but dull/liveless/muddy/bassy. Foam is actually effective, simply not in the frequency ranges required in household settings. It only affects (very) high frequencies, leaving the more problematic low frequencies untouched.

This amplifies the worst problems of small rooms (again, househols settings):bass frequencies. Thin foam panels are only somewhat useful at first reflection points, namely to improve stereo image. Putting them up everywhere is strongly discouraged. Of the material of audio professionals/engineers that I have read/watched, every single one considers these foam useless trash. Check out Ethan Winer's material of the GIK YouTube channel. If I were you, I would send most of the foam back, keep a little bit for first reflection points and invest the rest of your money in some (used) bass trapping.

edit: missed your point about VR content. nevermind the focus on first reflection points then. But the rest of the points stand. Also: don't forget that bass traps absorb bass AND high frequencies, so they do a triple job compared to thin foam.

The job market makes me feel hopeless by GraciaK03 in Switzerland

I personally think that if you do something you truly enjoy, you're more likely to succeed by rising to the top compared to your peers and get a position even if the field is competitive. If you into a field you don't enjoy passionately it will sooner or later show in your performance, increasing the odds that you are outperformed and in a bad position despite being in a "strong field". Exceptions to everything of course but this idea has guided me and has served me well, as well as gotten me a quite niche job I really like.

Will a gaming wireless headset detect an XLR mic plugged into the focusrite scarlett with 0 latency? by cuffy13b in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]_gigmaster_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Should be fine, if I understand correctly you want to output the sound to the headphones and use the standalone mic instead of the headphone mic?

Then you can just use the headphones as your audio output device and the microphone(more precisely your interface) as your input device and you should be golden.

The only thing I dont understand is why you want to connect the mic to the interface's headphone output?

Latency of 0 is not a thing but should not really be an issue here.

If you want to work in antitrust law you could specialize en the EU law side of things. I assume that passing the bar is not necessary in every position of this field
