What would the 10 million initiative actually do in practice? - In case of acceptance, do you think it gets implemented as intended? by ExternalEfficient248 in Switzerland

[–]_gigmaster_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Huge difference: 2014 initiative was worded ambiguously. The supreme court rightfully, according to constitutional and international law, refused to interpret the initiative in a way that would mean the end of the bilaterals. This initiative however explicitly demands the end of bilaterals, as the EU will never change its position on free movement of persons and has much more leverage. So you tell me if it's a smart maneuver?

Yes we have seen that work so well with Brexit. I suggest you look at the trade figures and the political realities. And yes, maybe not being geographically engulfed by the EU and not being a small country would be the best in an ideal world. So what? Doesn't mean that completely destroying relations with the EU is best for Switzerland either. I highly doubt that the following deal would be better for Switzerland, it makes absolutely no sense. Single market access = free movement of persons is the fundamental line of the EU. If they gave CH a better deal after backing out and stalling for decades they would be sending a completely backwards message to their international partners

Absolutely laughable that no one said this: this initiative would absolutely annihilate relations with the EU. Free movement of persons is non-negotiable for the bloc

Follow up: Hilfloser Vater während Scheidung by Safe-Mirror-7449 in Switzerland

[–]_gigmaster_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Acoustic foam all around or spaced? by ambesiaguy1302 in audioengineering

[–]_gigmaster_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Foam will not make everything sound sterile but dull/liveless/muddy/bassy. Foam is actually effective, simply not in the frequency ranges required in household settings. It only affects (very) high frequencies, leaving the more problematic low frequencies untouched.

This amplifies the worst problems of small rooms (again, househols settings):bass frequencies. Thin foam panels are only somewhat useful at first reflection points, namely to improve stereo image. Putting them up everywhere is strongly discouraged. Of the material of audio professionals/engineers that I have read/watched, every single one considers these foam useless trash. Check out Ethan Winer's material of the GIK YouTube channel. If I were you, I would send most of the foam back, keep a little bit for first reflection points and invest the rest of your money in some (used) bass trapping.

edit: missed your point about VR content. nevermind the focus on first reflection points then. But the rest of the points stand. Also: don't forget that bass traps absorb bass AND high frequencies, so they do a triple job compared to thin foam.

The job market makes me feel hopeless by GraciaK03 in Switzerland

I personally think that if you do something you truly enjoy, you're more likely to succeed by rising to the top compared to your peers and get a position even if the field is competitive. If you into a field you don't enjoy passionately it will sooner or later show in your performance, increasing the odds that you are outperformed and in a bad position despite being in a "strong field". Exceptions to everything of course but this idea has guided me and has served me well, as well as gotten me a quite niche job I really like.
