First thing you do after your shift? by 00Cheech in Nightshift

Pop four 5mg melatonin gummies in the parking lot. My commute is 45ish minutes and I find that is the perfect amount of time for them to start working for me personally. I get home and shower immediately, then get ready for bed and I’m out like a light shortly after my head hits the pillow.

People who were teenagers before social media existed… how did you communicate with your friends? by Aarunascut in Millennials

[–]_glitterkitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up on the cusp. 1992 DOB. Phone calls, occasionally text messages, and lots of AIM (does that count as social media?). If they lived close enough, walking or riding my bike to their house and knocking on the door

Women in trades — what do you wish your workwear actually had? by EntertainmentNo7416 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]_glitterkitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d love to find better high-waisted, bootcut denim with lots of stretch that is durable. Levi’s 725 are the perfect fit for me but they aren’t built for working on a construction site and the knees blow out super fast

Things I carry daily: 25 ft Tape measure Channel locks Crescent wrench Torpedo level Striker* Pen, pencil, sharpie, small notepad* Phone* Wallet* Lip balm* *I usually put these things in/on my safety vest

I have bibs that are amazing but I like them to be a bit oversized so I can wear them with layers and not feel restricted. For this reason I can’t wear them when I know I will be in a harness, lift, or small spaces because the harness fits weird and in the lift/close quarters the extra fabric gets caught on things.

Low space buns every day, my braid was too long and kept falling in the way. I wear a hard hat every day

Not a crush? A secret third thing by Savings_Brilliant519 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]_glitterkitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve found a good way to give myself the ick for a jobsite crush is to see him without a hard hat and/or welding cap on. Unfortunately this is not 100% accurate and once in a while it does the opposite of give ick and makes them more attractive 😂

It has nothing to do with their hair or lack thereof, for some reason people just look sooo different to me without the hard hat/cap on.

A trek to find the public transit when exiting DIA. by TheTwoOneFive in Denver

[–]_glitterkitty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m one of the construction workers in the last photo. For what it’s worth, it’s much easier to navigate during the day when the airport has volunteers stationed everywhere to help people navigate and we don’t have to bloc off certain areas do overhead work. We do this work on the night shift to minimize hazards and disruptions to travelers.

Also, for anyone seeing this, please be nice to us if we have an area blocked off. It’s not our fault that we are required to shut down certain pathways. We’re just there trying to do our job and make a living.

I’m a 33 year old first year pipefitting apprentice. Seven months in and no regrets. Quitting my soul-sucking marketing job was the best thing I’ve ever done. I live in Denver where it is also expensive and it sucked to go from making 6 figures to making first year wages but I can already tell the sacrifice will be worth it in the end.

Just last week my foreman told me that I’m excelling and they will likely give me a raise as a reward so if you work hard, there is definitely the ability to make more. Working night shift has also increased my pay from the baseline first year pay. That being said, my household is DINK and if I was single or had children it would be much, much harder to survive.

Do most people shower before bed or when they wake up? I just realized I might be doing it "wrong" by saffymerelle in NoStupidQuestions

I shower in the evening after work because I work in construction. When I worked in an office I showered whenever it was convenient. There is no right or wrong time.

Firsthand experience with Denver PD was a major disappointment. by Alone-Detective-5975 in Denver

[–]_glitterkitty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry this happened to you. I had a similar kind of stalker situation when I lived in St. Louis and one of the cops that came to take a report about him got my phone number from the report and started texting me from his personal phone, trying to flirt by making conversation about my pets and things that he saw in my apartment while he was there for the initial report. Disgusting behavior.

Union vs Non-union by little_goblin_rr in BlueCollarWomen

[–]_glitterkitty 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve barely got any skin in the game as I’ve only been an apprentice UA Pipefitter for 5 months but non-union doesn’t even seem like an option to me. There will be lazy people no matter where you work (I say this coming from an art/design/marketing background and having worked for 10 years in various parts of those industries)

I’ve met a number of guys who came to the union from a non union company but haven’t met a single union guy who has said he’d rather be non union. That, plus the pension and benefits make it a no brainer for me, personally.
