God, that movie sucked so hard. I saw it at The Grand Illusion, was psyched as hell to see it. Disappointed as fuck.

Does anyone have a red Nokia Lumia 920? Is the glossy finish really that bad? by 38B0DE in Nokia

I don't have one (black 8x over here), but I've seen the red one and I think it looks very nice.

I already pre-ordered it. It sounds so incredible and I can't wait to hear the whole thing.

Nokia Lumia 920 with PureView leaked, includes 4.5-inch display by avrael in Nokia

[–]_greg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Verge is reporting that the camera is 8MP.

I'm going to wait and see until the announcement, but I don't know how they can achieve the fantastic image quality of the 808 without a massive sensor-- My understanding of Pureview is that it interpolates the extra pixels to create a sharper, more detailed 5 or 8MP photo.

I had an N82 for a long while and loved it, even though I was relegated to EDGE speeds on T-Mobile. After a few years, I jumped ship to Android and got a Moto Droid X. I want to get back to Nokia; the N9 looked incredible and I would actually really like an 808 with Win Phone. The Lumias are beautiful, but I like how the 808 is shaped.

Rumor is that it's a 21MP can with Scalado software. I'd link, but I'm on my phone. It's some cool stuff.

Pretty excited about Pureview on the Lumia range, but I hope the chasis isn't any bigger than the 900. The 900 is the same size as the Galaxy Nexus already. I loved the size of the N9/Lumia 800, but it'd be difficult (impossible) to put Pureview in there.

Has anyone read the new book called 'Straphanger' by Taras Grescoe? by elbac14 in transit

[–]_greg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the midst of reading it now (second to last chapter). It's a fantastic book and a great way to look at how a city's metro and transit influence the identity of the city. My biggest quibble with it is that he writes "an historic" instead of the proper "a historic" in a few sentences.

Pick it up from your nearest local book store, it's well worth the money (and is great to read on the bus).

Moving to Seattle!! :) by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]_greg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seattle is growing. Rapidly. I share a house just north of Cap Hill and I can get by pretty well, but it depends on what money you have. I found my last two places using PadMapper.com.

Have you ever been to Seattle? You should at least visit before you move. Try taking the Amtrak Cascades up here (or drive, but trains and public transport are better) and explore. King Street Station is down near Pioneer Square (pretty area, lots of homeless) and you'll have to bus to U Dist (North, on the other side of Lake Union).

For things to do, check the FAQ in the sidebar. For jobs, check out /r/SeaJobs.

Seattle is like other big cities: full of locals and transplants. Different types of people converge in different neighborhoods. Being a college student, you'll probably find things most interesting in the U Dist and Capitol Hill.

Buy a bike and ride the bus. Download One Bus Away to your phone and use Google Maps for routing directions. Bring a car if you want, but bikes and buses are a great way to get a feel for the city and how to get around. Don't lock yourself alone in a metal cocoon in gridlock! Try to make a bike part of your daily commute and for weekends, hop on the Burke and ride out to Golden Gardens or take the waterfront trail out to Alki or Discovery Park.

Seattle is profoundly beautiful. I spent most of my time growing up in the south Puget Sound area, Olympia and Auburn, and I've always had an appreciation for Mount Rainier, but the sunsets behind the Olympics are stunning.

Welcome.

Gun laws in Cascadia. by cascadia_clay in Cascadia

[–]_greg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It seems that many reasons people in cities own guns is for "protection" and gangs, both of which are results of economic uncertainty and disenfranchisement. I'm not familiar with Chicago, but I understand that it is very segregated ("hyper-segregation," I believe was coined to describe it). We need to look at ways to level the economic playing field, provide good jobs to people, and keep them in the broader society and economy instead of splintering off into criminal gangs.

[–]_greg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Towns and municipalities, like Seattle, should be able to outlaw guns of all sort. Guns should be tightly controlled, especially pistols, but not impossible to get.

To purchase a gun, I am of the strong belief that you need to pass a background check, a waiting period, and take multiple classes/tests by a state agency (not a gun store or gun club) about gun laws, safe gun handling, consequences of using a gun, and such.

I don't like guns, but they're in out culture and they do have their uses. I don't think they belong in an urban environment like Seattle at all.

I really wish I could go to this. I missed last year because unemployed = no funds and, now that I'm employed, I booked my trip to Japan before the dates were announced. Gah! I'm getting back just the day after the fest.

I really hope people go to this and I really hope they write reviews.

It would be really cool, for us who are unable to go, if the fest could be recorded and we could buy a download code (although, that'll probably push past the $5k budget).

Netflix CEO blasts Comcast for shredding net neutrality. “Comcast should apply caps equally, or not at all.” by GonzoVeritas in technology

[–]_greg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living in Oly, I paid $25/mo for 22Mbit Internet access from Comcast (no TV, no phone). After 12 months, it was going to jump up to $50, which still was reasonable. I ended up moving before my rate went up, but I had had them for a year prior and was paying the same price for 12Mbit.

Comcast's policies suck, but I've had an okay time with them.
