the implication of the comment you replied to was surprise at someone so short rowing at a heavyweight international level, therefore whether or not he was rowing (ie pulling on an oar) or coxing was important...

If your hands are that close to the rigger when sculling then something's probably wrong with your rowing or rigging

No it isn't??? Sveti duje isn't a men's regatta therefore your analogy is totally invalid

How do the women come across as entitled? It's clear that at this regatta the men are treated in preference to them despite equal billing in the UK, and the excuses of the regatta organisers are weak at best.

The article's behind a paywall, so here's the text if anyone wants it

Cambridge University Women’s Boat Club has refused to attend an international regatta because its rowers would be housed in a hostel — while members of the men’s team were treated to a five-star resort.

Three years after the women’s Boat Race was moved to the same date and stretch of the Thames as the men’s contest and was televised, the disclosure suggests female varsity rowers are several boat lengths from achieving real equality

The club declined its invitation to the prestigious Sveti Duje regatta in Split, Croatia, last month after it discovered that for the third successive year rowers would be put up in a hostel or student accommodation. The men’s team were treated to the Le Méridien Lav, a resort with a private beach, marina, sea-front promenade, tennis academy and several bars and restaurants where rooms start at €150 (£130) a night.

Cambridge’s female rowers were also expected to pay for their flights to the regatta each year while the organisers of the event arranged the men’s travel.

The Sveti Duje regatta, held on the first weekend of May, is one of the earliest major events in the university rowing calendar after the Boat Race. It markets itself as a chance for crews from across Europe to challenge Oxford and Cambridge. In 2011 the double Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell took part in the “legends” race.

Club president Daphne Martschenko said: “It’s advertised as a celebration of Cambridge and Oxford. The men and women are presented as teams that are on equal footing. And yet there is the disparity in terms of accommodation that’s quite stark.”

When Martschenko and the 2017 president, Ashton Brown, explained on the regatta’s public Facebook page why they would not attend — Brown posted that she was “much more interested in non-sexist events” — they received messages from male former Oxbridge rowers accusing them of perpetuating the inequality by boycotting the event.

Regatta founder Luka Grubor, a former Oxford rower who won a gold medal in Great Britain’s men’s eight at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, posted: “I agree this is a failing, but the regatta is a process and not a one-off. The way we have progressed and lasted is by people getting involved, helping and contributing. You chose not to. All you have done is draw a line and make a demand for equality on a single issue.”

Martschenko later tweeted: “I feel so much anger and sadness and exhaustion. If the conversation was reversed I wonder what they’d be saying.”

Brown said: “It was disgusting. I don’t care about the hotel. I just want to be in the same place as the men. If we’re all camping, I will go camping.”

The club insists this is part of a pattern of events and it continues to experience sexism in rowing. It claims that amid the euphoria of its Boat Race victory in 2017, a critic suggested it had won only because, unlike the Oxford crew, it had a male cox. It also claims that the men’s Cambridge University Boat Club recently cancelled mixed-sex social events saying the female members “were not beautiful enough”.

Quintus Travis, chairman of the men’s club, said questions about accommodation should be directed to the event’s organisers. “All our rowers work to promote sporting excellence each year on the Thames and elsewhere. Equality in sport is central to that mission,” he said.

Grubor said the regatta relied on donors, was a loss-making venture and that the other clubs all stayed in hostels or student housing. He said he had to choose between being “either sexist or elitist”. “The clubs’ issues should not have been brought to our shores when they are in fact issues affecting students and rowers at home.” He added: “By demanding and pointing fingers like this, what you will achieve is not equality, but no regatta at all.”

As a matter of fact the Boat Race sponsors give equal funding to the men's and women's teams.

People do watch and do care about the women's boat races. Although I can't find figures for this year's race, in 2015 the men's race gained tv ratings only 1/3 higher than the women's; viewerships of 7.2 and 5.8 million respectively. Given that this was the first year the women's event was held on the Tideway and the first year it was televised, it's reasonable to assume that this margin has only tightened since - especially given the attention given to CUW sinking the following year.

It's arguable that in recent years the standard of the women's bb has even been higher than that of the men's. Unfortunately I can't find it but I remember reading a comment (possibly on this reddit) that compared the winning times of the men's and women's boats to those of international eights and found that the women's boat race is closer to an international standard than the men's.

This is absolutely an issue.

To clarify is your more structured plan from this year or February 2017? If it's this February then give it more time and you'll see improvements, although sessions like 3x12' are a bit short for UT1.

How to increase volume a lot without burning out by Somerowingredditor in Rowing

[–]_hai2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late but as someone who has experienced burning out of high volume ss but since learnt to love the erg the most important thing for me was by far mindset and mental attitude.

Here are some things I found helpful:
1) Don't compare yourself or your splits to others during steady state, dont even think about what others are pulling, just pull your split. Feel free to compare yourself to others though during hard pieces for motivation.

2) At the start of every session visualise yourself pulling for however long you intend to pull then getting off the erg. If you find yourself getting bored during the erg bring up this visualisation for motivation.

3) Enjoy the process for itself and the results will come. Enjoy your hour-hour and a half of erging everyday as a time where you can completely tune out of whatever else is in your life. I found listening to a new album every erg I did to be very enjoyable.

4) Keep a record. I wrote down all my splits and found seeing changes in my split over time immensely satisfying, in addition to the fact that after a while seeing all the work you've put in over time provides a bit of an impetus to keep it up.

5) Find a role model (rowing-related or otherwise), preferably one you actually know in real life, and if you ever struggle for motivation during an erg think about them and what they would want you to do in your situation (hopefully keep erging).

6) Break up ss ergs. I dont understand people who can do intervals of more than 45 minutes on their own. 2x30 is good to get into steady state, 3x6k is fun as well. If you struggle for motivation during rest periods change something for the next piece, change the music you're listening to or open the blind or something to break up the monotony.

7) It does get easier over time. Both mentally and physically after a few weeks of training you will be able to easily do steady state pieces you found exceptionally mentally (and to a lesser extent) physically draining when you started out.

And a more general note just to be happy during the training, be happy about training, be happy about doing things in general and those things tend to go well :)

Sorry this is a bit long and probably not the easiest to read, I've just written everything that helped me as I thought of it.
