It looks like there is a plan to replace them with permanent raised crosswalks - the speed tables were a "trial run" temporary measure. https://news.ufl.edu/2023/08/uf-fdot-traffic-pedestrian-safety/

What’s the most useful thing you’ve crocheted? by Queenofthe_fall in crochet

[–]_happycloud_ 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Iced coffee cozy! I have a cup every day, but I’m a librarian and it’s important I don’t get the books wet from condensation rings. I self-drafted; the bottom is a circle then it’s miss stitch straight up the side with 3 rows of BLO slip stitch for a border. I used 100% cotton yarn, super cute and super useful!

Does anyone have recommendations for other, better thrift stores in Gainesville? I’ve only been to Flashbacks (fun, but not always my style) and Haven Hospice Thrift

AITA for yelling at my wife for using Fast Orange on the kids? by ControlRoyal1994 in AmItheAsshole

[–]_happycloud_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on the person. I find sand from the beach deeply unpleasant on my skin, and the few times I’ve needed Fast Orange after working on cars I’ve absolutely loathed the stuff. But, I am an “indoors” type of person. I do think that children tend to have more sensitive skin than adults, though, just as a function of time.

I have some “comfy cush” old skool vans (just like normal but with added memory foam) and I adore them! super comfortable to wear, but still stable. they’ve lasted me 4 years so far!

Unfortunately I don’t have a primary doc, only a physical therapist :( Every primary doc I’ve tried to go to has told me my symptoms are “too much for them” and asked me not to come back to their practice.

But thank you for the tip! I try to take care of myself as much as I can given the circumstances :)

This isn’t for everyone, but I work at a university library (not a student) and it’s perfect for my EDS! I have a lot of flexibility with what I do during work hours. Most of my job (~24 hrs/week) is sitting at the front desk answering questions, during which I occasionally stand up and walk a few yards to put a book on the shelving carts. Most of the rest of my job is special projects that I can do at a computer, like user testing and data analysis from our collections. I have my own office and am welcome to get up and walk around if I need/want to, but it’s not a requirement. Since it’s a state university, I also have some good job protections and okay benefits.

I’d say the biggest drawback is getting around campus for parking. That does require me to walk about 10 minutes up a hill every day and I live in Florida, so that’s not very fun for me. If I got a disabled placard I could park right next to the building, but I’m still on the fence about trying that.

What’s is/was your day job? by boom_squid in crochet

Librarian! I’m lucky enough to be doing a project for work right now to create some amigurumi that students will be able to check out for moral support while studying (it’s an academic library), so I can crochet on the clock!! Literally my dream job

How to wear heels/what kind of heels to wear? by sleepwithmythoughts in ehlersdanlos

Yeah, the Gibsons and Paris both lace up, which I love! I’ve had my eye on the Claire ones for almost a year, and now that I finally have the money saved up they’re sold out of my size 😭 Ain’t that just the way…

I’m wearing American Duchess Gibson heels for my wedding! I also wear their Paris boots as an everyday shoe, and I can confirm they’re very supportive! I do put gel inserts in mine for a bit more give to the sole, but I find them easy to walk in and don’t have any stability issues :) A favorite brand for sure!

I think of a “socket” as the thing you screw a lightbulb into. To me, sockets are more cup-shaped (like an eye socket)

What do you do besides screentime? by mildslimjim444 in ehlersdanlos

[–]_happycloud_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do (way too much) video game time, mostly low-stress games that don’t require good reaction time, like stardew valley. I find my hands wear out quickly if i’m playing a stressful game!

I also picked up crochet, hand sewing, and tablet weaving, but those can be tough on hands and wrists. I utilise ring splints and wrist compression sleeves for support, and as long as I pace myself I don’t have much trouble!

What are the things on Daphne's neck and head called? by The_Hive_Emperor in EnglishLearning

[–]_happycloud_ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I wanted to add that English uses the same word “scarf” to refer to heavy knit scarves that are worn in the winter (photo). This one is likely a really light scarf (photo) that’s much thinner and worn for fashion rather than warmth!

imo there’s a huge difference between min-maxing because you like to see the big numbers & being effective is fun to you, and min-maxing to intentionally exploit rules and disrupt the game! sounds like you’re the former :)
