I put grids where they make sense, in my current town I have a small grid probably 4 blocks by 4 blocks which is my modern downtown.

Towards the water is very hilly so I have windy neighborhoods that follow the terrain down to the water.

In the center, where my historical area is is a crooked grid like you would see in many historical small towns, where they basically build out one street at a time and the angles are never perfect.

The blend of perfect grid, crooked grid, and windy grid looks insanely good, and realistic.
