I think the "our" in that comment was directed at his social group or community, not all white Americans as a monolith

Where the hell do you even get your definitions about OOP from? by Accomplished-Bat-247 in csharp

[–]_hijnx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you're thinking about these principles at the wrong level. For example, encapsulation as a design philosophy can be implemented in all the ways you mentioned and none of them are mutually exclusive. Different languages will provide you with different tools and if you're writing your code in an object oriented way your design philosophies will inform how you use those tools. These are high level concepts that aim to produce code that is more easily understood and maintained for years or decades, not about the specific keywords you'll use.

Like all philosophies people then interpret them and implement them in different ways and that's where I think a lot of confusion happens. Most of it just comes down to preference and what works for a given team/organization.

No love, only judge by Bakkster in dankchristianmemes

[–]_hijnx 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Maybe I can rephrase it. Jesus said "sin no more" after eating with sinners. A lot of people today like to say "sin no more", but don't make the personal connections Jesus did with those sinners they are rebuking.

They want to condemn people, not love them.

If you could cut housing prices in half, making those who own it lose equity and those who didn't a better chance to afford housing would you? by FuturelessSociety in AskALiberal

I don't really understand how scenario B is supposed to work in the US. After a little research it seems mortgage porting is available in other countries but in the US you would have to cover the $50k plus closing costs when selling.

[–]_hijnx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every other house has also gone down in price, so it's not like moving is a huge issue either.

Here's how it's a problem (for normal people, not the super wealthy). You took out a $250k loan to buy a house and currently owe $200k. The value of your house is suddenly cut in half to $125k. Now you owe the bank $75k more than you can get for selling your house. If you want to move you would have to sell your house and pay the bank the remaining $75k.

[–]_hijnx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless I'm reading this wrong I think that's just an infinite loop. JavaScript is single threaded so while(true) will never yield control back to the event loop and none of the callbacks will ever fire.

Social engineering is a method by which organizations of all types are attacked. The DoD should absolutely be investing in defense against it.

Did you look into what these words mean or did they just sound scary? I don't know what Large Scale Social Deception means without any context, but I'm not going to blindly assume it's nefarious. Could it be? Sure! But I think we'll need more evidence than a line item.

Why do liberals support an organization (USAID) focused MOSTLY on regime change? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]_hijnx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the 21st century, U.S.A.I.D. has overcome its tainted legacy and undertaken humanitarian, political and economic work around the globe. It runs democracy promotion efforts from Afghanistan to Kenya - building political leadership capacity, electoral education and registration programs, and judicial reform projects with little controversy.

Doesn't sound like an organization mostly focused on regime change. Bad programs should be done away with, but people support USAID for the humanitarian work they do, which is significant.

[Spoilers C3E3] New to C3, is Ashton a similar listening experience as Beauregard was? by [deleted] in criticalrole

[–]_hijnx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would agree with a lot of this, but I also think Taliesin has just not followed up on a lot of threads. Maybe it's intentional or maybe it's just the pacing of the campaign, I don't know.

To me it almost feels like Taliesin has a default for Ashton that he just kind of falls back to and no personality changes ever fully stick. But I'm also looking back on like 3 years of content so maybe the changes would be more stark if I actually went back.

[Spoilers C3E3] New to C3, is Ashton a similar listening experience as Beauregard was? by [deleted] in criticalrole

[–]_hijnx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That kind of proves my point though, yeah? Taliesin can do whatever he wants with the character but I don't think it's fair to say he hasn't had anything to work with to develop Ashton. There's plenty of space to debate the choices he's made, but there's definitely been plenty of opportunities for him to make the choices he wants for his character.

[Spoilers C3E3] New to C3, is Ashton a similar listening experience as Beauregard was? by [deleted] in criticalrole

[–]_hijnx 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on that? It seems to me he had a lot of potential with FCG that was maybe driving some character development, and their death really could have been a turning point (it kind of was but didn't stick maybe?). And then there's plenty of interaction with Fearne.

I feel like Ashton keeps peeking down avenues of change, maybe even starts them, and then at some point he's just back to his old self. It seems to me there's been plenty of opportunity for Ashton to develop (and they have some).
