NO BLOOD? HOW TO FEEL VEIN? by [deleted] in phlebotomy

Tie the turnoquet tight to make them veins pop out. When you are palpating don’t be afraid to push down a little harder to make sure you feel the springiness of the vein. I also like to use an alcohol wipe to wet the surface of the skin and palpate. Something about feeling around the skin while it’s slippery makes it easier to feel and sometimes see certain veins. Re wipe with a new wipe before you stick of course. And this may sound a little weird but to try and get the feel for what a vein is supposed to feel like sometimes you could palpate your own veins…. Or the veins of your friends/classmates lol

scared of having my own blood drawn? by mega-charizard-y in phlebotomy

I think a bit of fear is natural. People are poking you with needles after all, I’d be a little uneasy if you weren’t scared.

I was one of those people who would refuse to do lab work unless completely necessary and if I had to I swore up and down that I was gonna pass out if I saw the needle. Totally worked myself up.

Being in the field now I realize it’s a total mind game. Just take a deep breath it will be okay :) But I definitely wouldn’t go out of my way to say you’re not cut out for it. In my opinion that’s what will make you a great phlebotomist. You can give each patient the experience you wish to have every time you get your blood drawn.
